A few pieces arrived damaged in shipping, but I contacted customer service and they sent us replacements immediately! I ordered this particular hive for my husband's birthday due to the craftsmanship of being Amish made. He was absolutely thrilled with it. We are new to bee keeping, buy have always grown flowers to promote the health of bees and butterflies. My husband put the hive together with very little difficulty, if any at all, painted the outside to help withstand the Ohio weather we have, and we have already ordered a nuc from a local bee keeper. If we ever find we are in need of another hive or want to add additional to our home, we will definitely order another from this company. ... show more

This is our first hive and so far we are impressed! Assembly was pretty straight forward, had to make a few minor adjustments to wood so it would fit together, but nothing major. The wood glue that was included was a nice touch! After assembly, we added additional wood screws for extra durability. Note: Pre-drilling is recommended. The wood is pine and I have read and seen many with hard wood boxes. Hard Wood is the best for a hive. The box didn’t come with a top so I had to contact the seller to send me one and they was really prompt about it. So the seller is great making it right with you. There was a panel that was cracked on the super you can see the real glossy part on the red picture is where I patched it with wood glue and silicone. And some of the frame pieces were cracked like the picture in the first one. I had one piece that cracked off and I managed to glue it back on. Now the seller did replace the cracked pieces so. It’s all good! The super comes with with plastic foundation. I prefer wire or just a strip of starter wax at the top of the frame. I don’t like plastic foundations simply because it waste room and comb. I’ll use it to start a hive but I won’t keep it in for long. The deep or brood boxes comes with black plastic foundation coated with wax. All foundation coated with wax. The hive doesn’t come with a entrance restrictor which I don’t like I’ll just stuff me something in the whole for the time being. I got my bees yesterday and am putting it in today. I like the uncoated hive box because I get to draw on them or paint. I didn’t it to this one because I don’t have time before my bees got here. I love wood burner these hive and making designs on them. The hive comes with a bottom that is wired which is prefer so all the beetles and more can fall to the bottom. The hive comes with a feeding top. I should get my top that wasn’t in the box soon. Once I do I’ll do an update. All in all I like this box and will buy again. I may ask the seller to doo some mods like the entrance restrictor or see if he will sell pure wax foundation with them. You can make your own wax foundations easy. You take a board the size of the inside of a frame and with a handle on top. Rub some oil on the bottom of the sized board and then dip the oiled side into the warmed up wax you’ll need. It is a quick front to back dip. Hold the holder in the air for a second for the wax to dry trim you wax with a knife then pull off. You can now take a starter imprint of the comb before the wax gardens completely on both sides. And you have foundation. Easy! I made just make it myself. The pieces did fit together real snugly so it was almost no need for glue or nails but I did both anyway. If you need to paint the box or not use non toxic oil based or latex paint. I used barn and fence paint oil based from kalespar. The Lowe’s people didn’t even know what to look for. ... show more

I'm giving this 5 stars for the value. Bear in mind, my expectations were set low by some of the other reviewers before my purchase. I agree with their assessment that this on the cheap side. The wood is pine after all. Not all the pieces fit together as snugly as one would expect, but I've purchased top-of-the-line hive kits with this problem also. I caught a swarm from one of my other hives this Spring and needed another hive in a pinch, at a time year when the supplies for hive components are now. This kit was the only one I found with a screened bottom board (my preference for where I live), and essentially the other parts I needed to supplement my existing stock of hive equipment on hand. Buying the pieces individually would have been another $50-100 easy and I felt I was already over my beekeeping budget this year. I took a chance on this kit and was pleasantly surprised. Do I expect this to hold up as long as my cedar hive boxes dipped in wax? No, but if I get a couple years out of it I'll be satisfied. The one quirk with this kit was that they sent me a bottle of glue and no nails. The glue they provided was quality Titebond II, which is what I use anyway for gluing my hive components, so I can't complain for receiving another bottle. I did have to spend a couple bucks on nails. You definitely want to use nails, glue alone is not going to cut it when your frames are full of honey. This wasn't an issue for me, but if this was my first time assembling a hive, I might be confused about what kind of nails to use for the frames (the small #16 or #17 nails will work - four on the top of your frames and two on the bottom). I also drilled out and used regular 2" screws to add more support for the hive body and super. Otherwise, assembling the hives was easy and after a coat of good exterior paint the hive is in place.     • Wow! Can't Go Wrong with this Kit!
I really liked this kit. Easy to build and fits very well together. It comes as a complete kit. Just add your nuc bees or catch a swarm. I did use a couple finishing nails that I had to give it some extra strength but I'm not sure it needed it. I will probably use some non toxic pure tung oil to protect the wood rather than paint the outside. Highly recommended. ... show more
