  • Preview photo glazes not in book
Books is beautiful, content looks great. Weird thing is, 3 of the glazes in the first glaze recipe preview don’t appear to be in the book. (Ana’s Key West Blue, Alberta Yellow, and Broken Celadon). I really liked these when looking to order the book. In any case, I took a screenshot of them here on Amazon so I have them to try. I guess they didn’t make the cut but were in an early version? I’d also love to know what the combo is on the cover. UPDATE: Well I also got the author’s other book…and the glazes are in that one. So the preview page is for the wrong book. If you like that preview, buy his book Amazing Glaze instead (or also). ... show more

  • Awesome
Beautiful book about glazes. I’m a pretty new potter so it was very informative for me. I don’t know enough to know if it would have been as good for an experienced potter. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Great Content, Iffy Quality
Terrific content, with glaze recipes and sample object photos usefully arranged in sections by firing zone range and related techniques. I particularly like that the author included comprehensive photos of glaze double and triple combinations, doubly helpful in this case because of instructional content related to layering and revealing layered glazes. Technical content is broad and appropriately shallow, given that this is primarily a recipes/examples book. Still, I very much like that it DOES include technical content and it's at a level that is perfect, IMO, for the self-educated potter. Useful content, some I haven't seen addressed in the way this book does includes commentary on tools, blending and testing approaches, layering, modifiers, firing protocols (ramps) and more. As good as the content is, the physical quality of the book could be better. It's not cheap quality, though at first glance you might think exactly that, but it's not high-quality, either, quality being compromised first by its low-quality print-laminate covers, but most importantly, by the publisher's choice of paper. The paper is mid-grade and matte, which is *really* unfortunate for a book so dependent on photos. Moreover, the photos themselves aren't at high resolution. Gallery photos (gallery pages are sprinkled throughout the book) suffer the most. The glaze sample photos are at least adequate for their purpose. Signature sections are sewn, which is good to head off spine breakage in a book that will often be used lying flat, and it DOES lay open flat quite nicely. An excellent book and I'd love to see a top-quality edition. ... show more

  • Beautiful book with lots of information.
Beautiful book with lots of information! I am a fairly new potter and learning to mix my own glaze instead of using premade colors has been awesome. This book is informative, has step-by-step guides, beautiful color combinations, and has helped ease the process of making my own glazes. I love that it comes with so many different examples, as well as the beautiful pottery in the book. Great ideas, inspiring! ... show more

  • Great Inspiration For Potters Who Need Help Finding Their Glazing Signature
One of my kids- a daughter- is a fantastic potter. She loves to do many creative things and is really good at what she does. Glazes are an area for her that give her a challenge. I got the book for her. HOW THE BOOK IS SET UP This book is set up so you can use it as a reference or even as a training course. There is basic information in the front of the book to help you learn glazing techniques and make your pottery a success. Then it goes into each level of firing and the types of glazes you can experiment with. WHAT SHE USES Our daughter fires at about cone 6 or 7 and is not in charge of the firing, so she can not make the choices this book refers to without consulting the kiln owner at length. She likes that it goes into great detail if you want to get technical about the glazing or you can just look at photos and be inspired to try something illustrated in the book. HOW IN DEPTH? This is like a small training course in glazing. You will learn a lot about various levels of firing, what you can do and not do at those levels and things that you can try to make your pottery experience more enjoyable. You can get pretty in depth with this book, but you can also skim through and glean too. EXAMPLES There are galleries in the book which will inspire creativity, but they do not go into detail on how to emulated the gallery items. THE BOTTOM LINE This hard cover book is a nice basic course on all levels of firing glazes. It has great information in it and is a nice reference our daughter really enjoys using. MY RATING FIVE STARS. She has been wanting a book like this (or course). Until she can get a course in glazing, this book has been a great way to start basic improvements and experimentation with her pottery. Between this and her obsession with watching John the Potter, she is really enjoying expanding her glazing experience. ... show more
