  • Great for builders with patience.
The Allwood Spruce Claudia Cabin Kit is a highly rated garden house that provides 209 square feet of versatile space, ideal for various uses such as a home office, studio, or guest house. This cabin’s natural Nordic spruce wood construction and large windows give it a charming aesthetic, and for the price, it offers a lot of value. However, like many DIY kits, there can be challenges during the build. In our case, this cabin was purchased as a gift for a non-profit, and while it serves as a great office space in the backyard, there were some hurdles to overcome during assembly. ### Key Features 1. **Spacious Interior**: At 209 square feet, the cabin provides ample room for office space or relaxation. It’s large enough to serve multiple functions but still compact enough for a backyard. 2. **Natural Nordic Spruce**: Built from high-quality Nordic spruce wood, it has a natural finish that can be painted or stained for protection or aesthetics. 3. **Double-Wall Construction**: The thick wall planks provide insulation and stability, making it suitable for a variety of weather conditions. 4. **Customer Service**: Allwood is known for excellent customer service, and they assisted us every step of the way when we encountered issues during assembly. ### Assembly Experience The build itself is designed for DIY, but we encountered some issues that made the process more challenging than expected. Specifically, we found that the wood came quite warped, which caused difficulties in squaring the structure and aligning the walls. - **Foundation**: As with any large cabin, a solid foundation is critical. We built the structure on a wooden platform, but given the warping of the wood, ensuring a level and square base was even more important to avoid misalignment. - **Wood Warping**: This was a major issue during the build. Warped wood made fitting the pieces together harder, and we needed to add additional support to ensure the structure was stable and square. - **Structural Support**: After assembly, we found that the sheer strength of the structure wasn’t sufficient, likely due to the warped wood. The house was not perfectly square, so we added extra reinforcements to ensure it would stand strong in varying weather conditions. ### Common Problems Encountered 1. **Warped Wood**: One of the biggest challenges we faced was that the wood arrived warped, which made assembly more difficult than anticipated. Warped boards lead to misalignment, causing issues with the structure’s squareness and overall strength. 2. **Lack of Sheer Strength**: Even after putting the cabin together, we noticed that the overall structural integrity wasn’t ideal, likely due to the warped wood and the assembly challenges it caused. The structure required additional support to maintain its shape and prevent future shifting. 3. **Difficulty Squaring the House**: The cabin did not square up easily during the assembly process, which meant that adjustments were needed after the build to properly align the walls and roof. ### Best Tools and Materials to Fix the Problems 1. **Ratchet Straps**: To help with the warping of the wood and squaring the structure, ratchet straps are invaluable. They can be used to pull walls together tightly, reducing gaps and improving alignment. 2. **Metal Brackets**: Using metal corner brackets on the interior of the cabin will reinforce the corners and improve the overall stability. These brackets can help compensate for the lack of sheer strength caused by warped boards. 3. **Wood Shims**: If parts of the structure don’t line up perfectly due to the warping, wood shims can be inserted in gaps to help level everything out and create a snug fit between misaligned sections. 4. **Carpenter's Square and Level**: Constantly checking alignment and level during assembly will save time later on. A carpenter's square and a level are essential to ensure that everything is aligned as closely as possible during the build. 5. **Heavy-Duty Screws**: Regular screws may not be sufficient for reinforcing a structure with warped wood. Heavy-duty or structural screws provide better hold and can help secure the frame more tightly. 6. **Plywood for Extra Bracing**: To reinforce the walls and square the structure, you can add plywood sheets on the inside or outside of the cabin’s corners. This will strengthen the structure and provide extra resistance against shifting or warping over time. ### How to Add Extra Material to Reinforce It 1. **Add Diagonal Bracing**: Diagonal bracing in the corners of the structure can help with squaring the cabin and improving stability. Use treated wood or metal braces attached from the top to the bottom of the walls to help hold the cabin in place. 2. **Reinforce the Roof**: The roof can be reinforced by adding additional trusses or stronger beams, especially if the warped wood affected the roof’s alignment. Adding plywood under the roofing material can also improve strength and provide extra protection against weather. 3. **Use Plywood Panels**: Installing plywood panels on the interior walls or under the floor can help square the structure and add extra rigidity. This is particularly useful if the wood is warped or if the structure isn’t perfectly aligned. 4. **Anchor the Cabin to the Foundation**: To prevent any shifting over time, anchor the cabin securely to its foundation using hurricane ties or similar anchoring systems. This is especially important if the base isn’t perfectly square or if the structure may be exposed to strong winds. 5. **Caulk and Seal Gaps**: Warped wood can leave gaps between the logs or planks. Use a high-quality outdoor caulk to seal any gaps that may allow moisture or drafts into the cabin. Tips and Tricks for a Better Build Start with a Solid Foundation: Ensure your foundation is perfectly level and stable. A concrete slab or treated wood platform will provide a sturdy base and prevent future issues with settling or shifting. Seal the Wood: To extend the life of your cabin, treat the wood with a weather-resistant sealant or paint. This will help protect against moisture, UV rays, and pests. Staining or painting can also give the cabin a personalized look that matches your home or garden. Use Additional Insulation: While the walls are thick and sturdy, adding insulation, especially in the roof and floor, will make the cabin more comfortable for year-round use. This is especially important if you plan to use the cabin as a workspace or guest room in colder climates. Plan for Roof Drainage: If you live in an area with heavy rain or snowfall, consider adding gutters or a more durable roof covering. This will help prevent water from pooling on the roof and causing leaks. Get Extra Help for the Roof: Due to the height and angles involved, it's a good idea to have extra hands when you’re installing the roof beams and panels. This can prevent mistakes and ensure everything is aligned correctly. Pre-Paint or Stain Before Assembly: To save time and ensure a more even application, consider painting or staining the individual planks before you assemble them. This is easier than trying to paint once the cabin is fully built. Use High-Quality Tools: Make sure you have high-quality power tools, especially for drilling and screwing in heavy parts like the roof beams. This will save you time and effort during the assembly process. ### Final Thoughts Despite the challenges with warped wood and the need for additional structural support, the Allwood Claudia cabin is still a great value for the price. The generous 209 square feet of space, natural wood finish, and customizable design make it an excellent option for a backyard office or garden house. With some extra reinforcements, this cabin can serve as a functional and attractive addition to any property. We were particularly impressed with Allwood's customer service throughout the process. They acknowledged that the warped wood was not typical and were helpful every step of the way, ensuring that we were able to finish the project satisfactorily. Even with the problems we encountered, we don’t regret the purchase as it still provides a unique solution that is hard to find elsewhere. ... show more

  • Super very honest review
So, I originally bought this for a place to chill that’s completely away from my family, a place I can hide out from everyone.... just to read on a nice day. But ... ew, it’s disgusting . I’d rather read in a dumpster, it’s too ewwyperfect

  • Great for the price
We bought this for an office in the backyard. It is great for the price, but the wood came quite warped which made it a lot harder to put together than we thought it would be. Even put together, the sheer strength is not good and the house is not square, so we need to add extra support to square it. That being said, the customer service at Allwood is absolutely excellent. They let me know this isn't normal and helped out at every step along the way and did everything they could to make it right. Even with the issues, I don't regret the purchase at all as there is nothing else at all like this on the market. ... show more

  • this is perfect.
I have been looking for an art studio forever and finally stumbled onto this tiny house. I stuck my kids and husband in this unit and now have the entire real house remade into a place for my art. I couldn't be happier.

  • I had to do work.
I didn’t think this through. There’s no sink, toilet, furniture, kitchen. I had to assemble it myself. This is a millennial’s nightmare. Boo Amazon, boo.
