  • Fun, but the game has issues that need fixing
TLDR: This game is for Aliens fans. If you are not an Aliens fan, then you probably won't like it. Why? Well, it's currently in a strange state (server bugs, gameplay issues), but if you are a fan of the films and itching for some action/interactivity, the game's flaws might be forgivable. I've played around 15 hours so far at the time of this review. To start, this is an online game that has some serious netcode issues. Random disconnects, lags, and more plague the gameplay and make it sometimes difficult if not impossible to complete a mission. I have no issues with other online shooters, and I have optimized QoS router settings that work well with my fast wired ethernet connection. Cold Iron (developer) needs to address this as a priority. Next there are some odd gameplay nav quirks. Playing this on a PS4/PS5 you'll quickly notice that the game was built for PC first, and ported to consoles. This is mostly apparent by the menu design, where you need to move the "mouse" cursor to different options and then select. It's slow and tiresome, and begs for better integration with console navigation best practices. The item selection wheel could be faster, especially when faced with an oncoming horde. Finally, we come to the game's co-op system, which is fun when it works. The problem is that there are so few players at this point, that you will likely be matched with two "AI Synth" teammates 80% of the time. These AI team bots are absolutely awful to play along with. They act more like fodder for the enemy, and are constantly in the way, or put themselves into danger which risks mission success and rewards. Completely avoid the AI members unless you are just starting out and playing on the lowest level of difficulty. Until the game gets more popular and matchmaking works better , the AI bots are my number one gripe. The good news is that many of the issues noted above are fixable, and Cold Iron (developer) is pushing out content updates and fixes in good time. Even though the game isn't perfect, I'm happy to support the developer and look forward to what things will be like in a few months. So if you can make it past the above, then you're ready to enjoy - and it's a blast! The whole game is quite visually stunning, and walking through areas inspired by the movie line sometimes gives me a good "wow" feeling of nostalgia. A wide variety of weapons and perks to unlock make player development fun and varied. The lore is well written, and even the voice acting is decent for a "budget" game (currently priced at a discount to MSRP here on Amazon). Blasting the various types of aliens in horde mode is extremely satisfying. Finally, when you get matched to a good team, you may have the option of many hours of enjoyment and laugh with your fellow players from around the world. 4/5 stars, even accounting for the aforementioned issues. ... show more

  • A Buggy But Fun Run & Gun Squad Game
This game is a flawed yet fun multiplayer romp through the Alien universe. The entire playloop of the game is centered around multiplayer rounds that splits up a campaign slate into 3 missions. Each mission is around 20-30 minutes depending on difficulty, which can be played in spurts if time is a bit tight for gameplay sessions. If you don't have squad mates to play with online (which the game does require an active PSN online subscription), it is possible to play offline with a AI team. This is where the game faulters though, where AI companions have no idea what is the difference between shooting a wall corner and a approaching Xenomorph mob - you are expected to carry the team if you are to clear the missions. Speaking of, I was honestly surprised on how difficult this game was. A hardcore gamer myself, the weapon load-out is really weak when starting a new save file. Unless playing with upgraded weapons or friends to cooperate against the Xeno swarms, it is recommed to play on "casual" difficulty. A really weird choice, I know, but the difficulty spike and level scaling forces you to when playing by oneself. As someone who has played Alien: Isolation, there are some aesthetic & gamplay choices that echo that stand-alone horror experience. Picking up items, digging through chests, or opening doors has a wait time that exposes yourself to being attacked for a few seconds to complete each action. The overall atmosphere captures the look of Isolation, with it's lo-fi late 70's futurism design. While this title is way more action and arcade compared to Isolation, I highly recommend playing this game if you are a Aliens or horror fan in general. It is nice to see games that are not this massive, micro-transaction filled experiences that can be played in short spurts to one's (hopefully Xenomorph free) heart. Recommed buying this game at $20 to play through the experience & see if it's worth your time. If you like it, it is only $30 to upgrade it to the ultimate edition with all DLC on PSN. Which may go down in price over the coming months anyways. Happy bug-hunting, soldiers! ... show more
