I watched a lawn expert on Youtube because my lawn has just looked poor for the last three years despite using a four step program of fertilizer. I decided finally this year to send my soil out for testing but a local lawn expert told me to check the ph first. My soil ph tested a 5.0 (too acidic) and so for $100.00 I bought two 15,000 sq. ft. bags of calcium carbonate instead of lime and after some decent rain I am already up to a ph of 5.8. I will treat it again in the sping but the difference is already dramatic. I'm putting in a couple new trees at the house, and somewhere lost my old water meter, so I bought this one. I've learned since a problem years ago with a landscaper that the symptoms of a tree being over-watered are identical to the symptoms of under-watering. So it's good to make sure you're giving a new tree the right amount of water. This water meter makes it easy. Just shove it into the dirt and check to see if the needle's in the green. I don't know what I was thinking purchasing this... I needed it for pH although I cannot trust the reading. It was close enough (soil was neutral) although nothing about it feels accurate. If you are looking for ballpark, sure; this will work. If you need a degree of confidence in the reading... just get litmus strips. ... show more

I can't tell if this is working or not. Maybe I don't have the hang of it yet? Will keep it and use it in multiple potted plants to see if the reading differ or stay the same.
