    • It's a fun pedal, but...

This is a very fun pedal with a lot of useful pitch-shifting effects. However, there's a very slight but noticeable lag in the tracking of the pitch-shifting effect. If you run the pedal with the wet signal (the pitch-shifted signal) at 100% with no guitar signal mixed, you will notice that what you play is always behind the beat. Unfortunately, this pedal is only good if you mix your guitar signal in the effect. The way I use pitch-shifting effects like this is to use it to detune the guitar for drop-tuned songs. A few brand-name pitch-shifting pedals worked flawlessly and sounded amazing. The Alabs Orbital pedal, however, is a big flop in that aspect. For example, if I use the -5th setting (tuned down a 5th) the pedal just sounds muffled with no definition. Adding distortion on top of that just sounds muddy. Turning up the tone knob all the way up didn't seem to help. To make matters worse, the lag in pitch tracking just simply makes this not a viable way to use this pedal. Unfortunately, I'm taking one star off of the overall rating. I also find that the instructions to "program" the special function are confusing. There's one section where I think it's a typo because when I tried to replicate what was described in the manual, it seemed to not work the way it was described. Given that this could be a user error, I will not factor this into my rating until I'm able to figure out how to program the knob changes and activate it on demand with the footswitch. At the moment, this feature is not very intuitive. The glide function is disappointing. I was hoping that I could use this function to replicate the whammy effect made famous by a certain guitar player. Unfortunately, the glide part also seems to fizzle out as soon as it hits the target note. So when you try the glide effect, all you'll get is a weak-sounding note that doesn't sustain. The pedal is not all bad. If you use this pedal as a harmonizer, it works fine. However, I feel like this pedal is missing an expression pedal option to make the harmonizer useful. Maybe if I can figure out how to make the "programmable" feature work, I can use that in place of an expression pedal. Since this pedal is an "every note gets shifted up the same value" kind, certain notes will sound out of tune when you play a scale or solo. Every note in a scale doesn't harmonize in the same value and that's why you need an expression pedal so that you can make those notes sound in tune in a musical scale. The pedal also works fine as an octave pedal (shifted up or down) and it's probably the one aspect of this pedal that I find to be the most useful. I find that the tone of the octave-up effect is very reminiscent of the whammy pedal in harmonizer mode. However, the octave-up note seems to have a weird digital artifact when the guitar signal drops below a certain volume. So should you get this pedal? Maybe if it fits your budget and if you feel like you're more savvy at figuring out how to make the "programming" work. Lately I've been exploring stereo effects for my guitar rig and decided to try this stereo reverb pedal. I was able to dial a suitable surf guitar tone within seconds. The reverb can do a standard Fender amp style at the lower settings, all with a bit of stereo separation to it. The preset reverb type switch offers various room sizes and a few add some modulation and sound effects possibilities as controlled by the MOD knob. I was thinking 5 stars right there. But I didn't just stop at the lower reaches of the setting knobs. Something strange and totally unexpected happened when I set the preset to SHIMMER and maxed out the MIX for all-wet sound. I started hearing synthesizer-type sounds and when I ran some fuzz from a separate pedal into this reverb effect, I heard a cello, mellotron and then the sound of my jaw dropping. With the DEPTH up more than halfway, these sounds gave way to a chorus of angels and ocean waves crashing (full on serious here, no exaggeration). All this from a simple strummed chord. The sound is amazingly full and there's so much going on in there, extra harmonized notes and lingering sustain. To call this a reverb pedal really sells it short. This can do a whole range of tones similar to a synthesizer pedal and with crazy long reverb trail options. And what's amazing to me is that it tracks perfectly. Even the most dissonant set of guitar notes come back with accompaniment that somehow makes it sound musical. Don't ask me to explain, but the extensive manual does a pretty good attempt at trying (lot's of "wizard" circuits and short-press, long-press, light changes color for preset saving and recall options, all stuff I'll get to eventually). The MIX control and circuit offers a direct bypass that passes your sound directly through to the output with zero latency. Adjusting this knob goes from zero reverb to 100% reverb with no bypass tone in it at all (this gives a bowed instrument type of tone and accounts for the cello I heard). I also like the vibe of the pedal, the artwork and the writeup that tells the tale of Adam and his atmospheric adventures in the clouds as he travels over land and sea. Fitting, given the etherial nature of this pedal and the sounds it can help you achieve. I'm really into guitar MonoSynth and Polyphonic Octave type pedals, but in order to get them to track properly, you need very precise playing in order to not accidentally trigger wonky bad-notes. I've never heard a pedal that can just take a chord and add a bunch of accompaniment, including bad/wrong notes and not dish out some sour notes in the process. This pedal is no replacement for those other filter pedals with digital tracking, but it does offer something completely different that I haven't heard before. I have it near the end of my pedal board so that it can transform the synth/octave and fuzz pedals even further. So, if you're into surf, rockabilly or even ambient music suitable for airports, check this out. Recommended. ... show more

You can spend upwards of $300-400 for a reverb pedal. Or you can find them $39. This one falls in the middle at right around $100. It has a lot of features for the price. Three ambient reverbs, plus spring, plate, swell, shimmer and others. For each you can adjust the wet-dry mix, the decay time, the brightness, and pre-delay. It allows for stereo or mono operation, providing both L (mono) and R inputs and outputs. There is no provision for it to be run off a 9v battery and requires an external power supply. Like most pedals the power supply adapter is not provided. Although made in China, the instructions are clear and written by someone with a good grasp of the English language. The one negative is this requires 9v power at 250mA minimum. I’ll claim ignorance here as to whether that is typical for reverb pedals, but my pedal board only has one connection that provides this much power (and it is already used by an amp sim). The remaining connections all max out at 100mA. Because of this I needed to use and additional wall wart just for this pedal (which kinda defeats having a board). I tried running this pedal off one of 100mA connections, but it produced a hum. And the instructions warn against this anyway. Again, I don’t know if this power requirement is common or not, but I found it a little frustrating. The sounds are good and as expected.
