  • Smooth shiny frets!
I’ve polished frets on three of my bass guitars so far, and the abrasive pads seem to have plenty of life left in them. The pads are color coded from coarse to superfine, but the color starts to become obscures with use, so I store and use them in order to prevent using them out of sequence. The process takes a while, but I’m getting faster each time. The stainless fretboard guards come in various sizes to accommodate a range of frets, from thin to jumbo. They work well, though I do use blue tape to provide further protection. I haven’t used the file much, but it will remedy fret sprout, and there are videos on the StewMac website to guide you through the process. I collect bass guitars made in the late 1990’s, and most of them come with varying degrees of fret wear. Once they are polished, they look beautiful and play like butter. I would buy this again. ... show more

  • Great kit, easy fix for sharp fret ends and more
The Fret End Dressing File is designed so that you do not damage your fretboard or body while working on the higher note frets. Recently bought a 2007 Gibson Melody Maker and the prior owner didn't condition the board much, resulting in a few sharp fret ends. Got a sweet deal on the guitar, but had never worked on frets, other than polishing them, figured I'd buy the kit and watch the vids StewMac has about dressing/fixing frets. I conditioned the fret board until I was happy with it, left the guitar out to absorb some humidity. This alone made the fret sprout better, but it still needed some work. Got the kit in after a few days and went to work. Made quick work of it and wow, what a difference. Found a new Gibson LP Jr case which fits the Melody Maker perfectly, now I'm making some $$$$ flipping it. It did come with the Gibson gig bag, but I'm more of a hard case guy and I think it adds a lot of value to the guitar. ... show more

  • Great kit!
Wanted to try my hand at dressing up some frets on a guitar that had super sharp ends and were rough. It was a cheap guitar so a good place to give it a try. I think I did pretty good for a first time! Still some marks on some of the fret ends but at least now I don't have to donate blood every time I play, ha. Especially like the file...makes it easy to shape the frets without damaging the fretboard with the smooth rounded edge. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • I'm glad I bought this
I used this set on two guitars for sharp fret ends, along with the StewMac leveling file, (purchased separately) and though the complete purchase seemed a little pricey at the time, when I brought a guitar to the luthier previously it cost me double the price. I'll save the luthier for those fixes that are beyond my abilities. ... show more

  • A Little Overpriced
I recently picked up a Hagstrom guitar online, but the frets were horrible on it. Otherwise it was perfect and beautiful, so I really wanted to fix the issue myself rather than return it. This kit took care of the issue! I was very concerned about marring the finish, but all I needed to do was lay masking tape about a millimeter away from the fret ends along the bottom, and carefully filed off the excess. The tape prevented me from scratching the guitar, and the round side of the file didn't mar the finish as I rounded the base slightly. I used the two sided polishing stick to finish the job. It did take me over an hour to complete, but I took my time and was as careful as I could be. The result was really comfortable frets and not one scratch! For the issue that I had, the most important tool in the kit was the file, while the polishing stick worked great to finish the fret ends to perfection. Honestly I didn't use the rest of the kit, so to do it over again I would have only purchased those two items and saved some cash. The file is well worth the money, but the rest of the kit seemed a bit expensive. ... show more
