I've had this for less than one day and will update if things change. I bought an open box unit so had to perform a factory reset as part of the initialization. I connected it first to a network cable and then later wirelessly and saw no difference in picture quality or performance. As others have noted the picture sometimes is not as high resolution as when the antenna is connected to the TV, but is still good. There was no loss of channels compared to when the antenna was connected directly to the TV. The installation process is not a simple "Plug and Play", but following the prompts on my Samsung tablet it made it relatively simple. I had a spare external external drive that I hooked up and was able it immediately record shows. I already have a Sling subscription and the AirTV2 integrated easily. We have multiple TV's, with ROKU, Chromecast with Goggle TV or using the Smart TV's Sling app and each one receives good signal. So why four instead of five stars: Only one viewer at a time for Live OTA viewing, but The DVR controls are basic, but still very functional, but they are not as robust as our DISH DVR was. For the cost savings, I'm more than happy with it If this product lasts for a few years, it's hard to imagine a better solution in this price range. ... show more

I cut the cable cord, and needed a way to get local channels into 3 TV’s around the house, two of which are old analog sets. After looking at the various ATSC tuners and their issues, the need for yet another remote control, Locast, which isn’t really free unless you’re okay with intentional disconnects every 15 minutes, etc I decided an AirTV with Roku was going to be my best option. I’ve had the AirTV in use now for two months, and I do think it was my best, although not perfect solution. I have an antenna in the attic and located the AirTV in the basement near my router so I could use a wired connection rather than rely on WiFi. The unit generally works as advertised. Getting the unit incorporated into my Sling subscription and the channels scanned took all of 5 minutes. I just had an old 500gig WD hard drive and external case laying around, so I connected that to the AirTV2 for the DVR function. It says I have anywhere from 40 hours to 160 hours of total storage, which seems to vary day to day on a whim. However the AirTV didn’t balk at the older drive. It formatted in just a few seconds, and has been doing everything I expect it to do. So far I haven’t needed to reboot the AirTV or the hard drive. As for some of the other complaints mentioned in other reviews, here’s what I’ve observed. I think the tuner really is less sensitive than the tuner inside a TV. When I first installed the unit, a couple channels would pixelate pretty frequently. They were fine on the TV tuner, however. I installed an amplifier on the antenna, and that cleared up. I’m only about 12 miles line-of-sight to the local transmitters, so I don’t know that I would count on this to work adequately with an indoor antenna unless you’re just down the road from the tower, but your results may vary. I also get the spinning wheel and momentary freeze occasionally, most frequently right before a commercial break hits. I suspect this actually has something to do on the transmitting end of the station, like a clocking glitch or bit rate change that the AirTV can’t handle instantaneously, but no way to know. I sometimes get a “frequent buffering” message on the screen telling me to check my internet connection, oftentimes even when there’s no visual issue with the picture. That may be the unit having trouble communicating with Sling’s servers, which it supposedly does, but I have gigabit internet up and down, so that’s just a guess. Also note that programs served from this unit’s DVR have no “resume” function. They’ll start from the beginning every time. So if you stop watching something you’ve DVR-ed on the AirTV2, make a mental note of where you left off so you can fast-forward when you want to finish watching. So overall, the AirTV has some issues, but I’ve learned to live with them. Given the issues the unit has, and that others report as well, it seems like it would be a better deal for maybe half the price. I bought mine from Amazon, and there was a $25 coupon included, that had an expiration date three months prior to my purchase. I submitted the coupon anyway, but never got the credit. Maybe try buying directly from AirTV to see if their $25 coupons aren’t outdated. Overall, this will save you the brain damage of switching between the tuner and HDMI inputs on your TV. Plus, it incorporates seamlessly into Sling’s on-screen TV guide that’s reliable and free, and you get a DVR function if you add a hard drive. The DVR function is maybe the biggest reason to purchase this, since it seems the best OTA programs are on in the middle of the night.     • OTA (over the air) DVR Worth Owning

To start with I had been looking for a replacement OTA DVR as the one I owned was no longer supported nor sold. Many of the potential replacement DVR's featured saving and streaming OTA content via an app with support for various platforms or smart TV's. So which one to pick based on the technology available today? I was not trying to be cheap but one of the attractions of the AirTV2 was the 'free' TV guide and no recurring fees. Now this piece of hardware did require an external hard drive to enable the DVR functionality and of course as a network device needed a home network/internet connection. The last required item was a smartphone as the initial setup was accomplished via the Sling app. I learned most of what I needed to know either via the website for the product or YouTube videos which are available from other reviewers. I decided to throw this in; This is an OTA device and I already had an outside TV antenna in place to make this work. It works with Sling so it does streaming content from Sling ..... you can do the research on Sling as they allow you a free account and have paid options available. The end results; PRO: (1) Good picture quality (2) DVR functions well and is easy to use (3) I have both a Roku & Amazon Fire TV and the app works well on both (4) Size of the unit as it has a small footprint (5) Decent guide (6) The two TV tuners pull in lot's of stations in my area CON: (1) small issue but the power transformer is large and the plug is proprietary so don't break it! (2) The setup was done via my smartphone Android Sling App. Not a terrible process but you do need to pay attention. That being said I found a YouTube setup/review online which I watched first. Is it really a CON? If you are not a little bit tech savvy it might be. (You of course need to at least sign up for the free Sling account to make it work) (3) There really isn't any instruction for using the device. I downloaded the Sling App for Roku on my smart TV and just made the plunge. It's then a matter of trying to figure out navigation in the App itself and figuring out how to record or playback from the DVR functionality. It took me about two days to get a comfortable feeling using the device. Sling does provide some free streaming content and I soon learned I needed to mark my OTA channels as "Favorites". Otherwise the OTA channels became hard to sort out from the streaming content in the guide. (4) To watch OTA channels there is a 4-6 second delay if you change channels. (channel surf) My Summary; Yes, I would purchase this again. Once I got my comfort level selecting various options and making a few OTA recordings it really works smoothly. I don't use it to watch OTA television as the televisions I own have their own tuner and guide so changing channels is much smoother using them directly. If I know I want to record on the DVR I switch to the Sling App on the TV or smartphone, setup the recording schedule, and return to my TV for any regular channel surfing. It does exactly as I want by recording things I would otherwise miss and playback is smooth, clear and just looks good. With that in mind it makes a great OTA DVR. ... show more
