My 6-year old loves gems and pretty stones. She has had the National Geographic Advent calendar with rocks in past years, so I thought she would enjoy this one too. Surprisingly, my 3-year old was just as interested. PROS: Great variety of stones - some I've never seen or heard of so this collection complements other stones we already have. Lovely natural canvas bag to keep the treasures in. It's nice to know exactly what each stone was. With the other calendar, we had to match the stone with the picture and they don't always look similar, let alone the same. In some cases, we remained confused. The lettering system here points you to the exact stone. Some stones are quite big and you know kids love big. In three of the boxes we found duplicates of the stones that were supposed to be there - not sure if this was intentional or an accident but little sister was happy. The geode (day 24) is magnificent! I would totally wear that necklace myself, if my daughter would let me. CONS: The numbers on the boxes are hard to see because they are in black font on dark blue background. So one gravitates toward reading the words instead, but that gets a little confusing because you have to remember what letter you were on the day before. I thought it was distracting having both numbers and words. And my 6-year old wanted to know what the words had to do with the stones (nothing?) Boxes were hard to open for my 6-year old and I had to help on a number of occasions. Strangely, some boxes had two "ears" (openings) and some had only one. Some of the stone descriptions were interesting and informative, others were void of meaning. And some were plain weird, e.g., "exudes charming charm" and "tiger eye stone also known as tiger eye stone..." And some misspellings: "imagintion" The amazonite looked nothing like the photo. Many of the stones were unpolished which was unexpected given our experience with the "brand name" version of the calendar. I suppose this can be a positive for some as it provides textural variety overall. ... show more

This is pretty cool gift for kids, especially from 5 to 9 years old. The product will teach what each stone is called for its name. The reason I give 4 star is that the quality of the stone is not that good. There are some gravel, dust, and sands from the different stones, depending on where it came from. The so-called calendar provides charm or characteristic for each stone. I don't understand how it is determined that way because there is no instruction, but the kids look at it as they have collected the specialty from each stone. ... show more

My son loves rocks, gems and stones... We've taken him to our local diamond mine a few times, but that gets old fast when you can only dig out one type of stone. I seen this and had to get it, I'm glad I did. Some compartments have two stones in them. The stones are decent sized and there are fact about them on the package. There's also a magnifying glass and a sack to store the stones. I can not wait for him to see this, hopefully I can hold my excitement until December. I'm glad I ordered this advent calendar and would most definitely purchase more.. great for any age rock lover! ... show more

This advent calender offers a nice mix of rough cut and polished rocks and minerals as well as a range in quality and size. The box is much higher quality than most advent calenders out there. It has a top cover that lifts open and provides detailed info on each item that can be matched up to the day of opening via the insirational word on its push to open tab. I was a bit surprised by the heft of this Advent Calendar. I was thinking pebble sized rocks, but I think the rocks will be as pictured sizes. I wanted to take a peek, but I will wait for Advent. The words are a nice daily thought that can be meditated on during the season. For the young rock hound, it will be a nice daily experience, or even for us older rock hounds, as well. ... show more

This advent calendar is great. It has a good variety of stones, some raw, some polished. There is some nice extras, too. I especially like the labradorite and yooperlite. The yooperlite has chunks that glow under uv light.

Fun little collection for someone who enjoys rocks! We opened one just to check it out and got a citrine. It come with a little plastic magnifying glass to enlarge your gem and check out the details :) I think this will be a great alternative to opening a little piece of chocolate on my past advent calendars. The box is a hoky with days labeled strength, happiness, joy, etc. but just smile and enjoy it for what it's worth! ... show more
