  • Not easy- but worth the trouble. Plan on days, not hours.
I'm a senior with a lot of IT & PC experience, have programmed Arduino using C++, but never used a Raspberry Pi before. I bought this item as a hobby with hopes my 8 & 10 year old grandchildren would enjoy helping me build it. I installed the software on my Pi 4 and reviewed the instructions ahead of time. Using the downloadable Tutorial and Utube videos we got about 1/4th done with the assembly when the tutorial and video diverged, and we had to stop to regroup. I worked it out on my own in time, but the group learning experience failed. My 8 year old grandson really enjoyed playing with the car after assembly. I inverted the Pi board so the HDMI/Power jacks would be assessable, I'm guessing the kit was originally designed before the new Pi 4 profile came along. There was a comment to this effect in the tutorial, but no videos or pics to aid this modified assembly. I think this modification also reversed the forward/backward motor direction and up/down camera direction, it was necessary to swap motor wire connections and make minor program changes (as indicated in the tutorial troubleshooting section). I found the tutorial phrasing confusing - English must have not have been author's first language. This also caused frustration with subsequent programming examples, along with a few key errors in the tutorial code examples - I wasn't equipped to resolve these without Adeept Support help. Adeept Support was great, except for the minimum 24 hour email turnaround time (used for 5-6 issues). I had a few screws missing, and several extra Acrylic parts. When I notified them, they sent me an entire second kit. The assembled car fell off my desk a month later and broke a wheel and motor - so I had replacements available. The IR line tracking doesn't appear to work, but I don't care and didn't try to resolve it. All other function worked out of the box (afterthe PI inversion was resolved). I have now successfully completed most of the examples and am now working on incorporating facial recognition - after 2 months its starting to be great fun, and I'm also considering adding Adeept's robotic arm to the car. CONCLUSION: Adeept uses high quality, durable, and attractive hardware. The kit comes with a lot of interesting and advanced software, which also appears to be robust and high quality. The software is paired with a comprehensive tutorial, but if you want to really dig into the code, I wouldn't recommend this kit to a novice, especially an inexperienced child. There are a few design flaws in my opinion. . Like a lot of innovative project kits, it uses driver software for the LED lights that isn't fully compatable with the new Pi 4's built-in sound hardware, so the install scripts disable Pi 4's sound/audio system. If you want to add any audio, you must ask Adeept Support how to undo this - which so far hasn't been a problem for me. . You have to pull off the wheels in order to remove batteries in order to charge them - why would they design it this way? . The Pi and hat are well protected (inside the car sides), but assessing the MicroSD Card and hat jacks for expansion requires disassembly (which takes a few minutes) . Although the wiring is very efficient and inside, out-of-way, I found the wires too short and really constrained. Since the kit goes together like a puzzle, this makes assembly unnecessarily difficult. I recommend this kit, to experienced Pi users - it works well after installation and I doubt you can find better, providing you want the extensive function of a Pi. It can operate as: an RC car driving purely from the remote control tablet/phone/PC; via preprogrammed instruction guided by camera, motion, sonar, and IR sensors; or some hybrid of these. It comes with downloadable software to do this, which you can change as you like, or code your own from scratch. Initial configuration supports the RC car mode only via your local WI-FI, but you can take it on the road via the Hotspot configuration. Their is also a PC-only GUI configuration. ... show more

  • Good idea, but extremely hard
I was looking for OpenCV with Raspberry Pi projects and bought it, but assembly is extremely difficult. It takes days to complete it.

  • Adeept 4wd Pi Car Install
Test the car before assemble, motors, lights, ultrasonic, picamera. Download code from internet for each device, the included code is not that great. Seller should include this in software setup but didnt. This is how I got mine to work. You will need to switch to python 3 once you install image or install manually. cd /usr/bin sudo rm python sudo ln -s python3 python Install opencv- sudo apt-get install -y libopencv-dev python3-opencv sudo apt-get install -y python3-pil python3-tk Enable picamera sudo raspi-config Also I use VNC to connect to car from PC, very easy. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Great but is not a afternoon project, more like a weekend project, but well worth it.
Be prepared to spend a couple of days to build this but it is well worth it. Please follow instructions online, it will save you headaches. The quality is excellent and the finished product is very fun. At first I gave only a 3.4 but once I followed online directions (my own fault at first) everything went together great!! ... show more

  • Fun STEAM Project for anyone.
I am a fan of Adeept's products and one thing I always mention is that their Github repositories are up to date with latest fixes and enhancements. As of today the last commit was 10 days ago which goes to show that they actively work on their code. This one packs a punch with the 4WD and not only can you get creative with the code but the placement of the Pi allows for expansion. I am thinking to buy the arm but have other ideas for it. This one is by far their easiest to assemble so suitable for young ones to adults like me. Great work adeept and thanks for making weekends fun! ... show more
