It's a big fu–I mean fancy disc lock. Like all disc locks, this clips through your motorcycle or scooter's brake rotor, stopping a thief from hotwiring your ride, breaking your steering lock (surprisingly easy!), and taking off in the saddle. So what does it offer beyond your average disc lock in the $30-60 range? Well, for starters, it's a near-top-of-line lock made by legendary German security company Abus. It's heavy enough to brain a would-be carjacker in a pinch, and visibly well-built. Its design guards against a typical defeat of disc locks: a large bolt extractor driven into the gap would have a tough time prying open its jaws due to the hardened steel case and slight lip on the locking pin catching the other side of the shackle. The disc-detainer Abus XPlus lock cylinder is nigh-unpickable unless you're an expert. Overall, the only realistic way to attack this would be with an angle grinder to shear the 13mm locking pin; not a covert or quick way to do it. To use the lock, you turn the key and the spring-loaded shackle pops open. You thread the shackle through a hole in your front rotor (most bikes don't have holes large enough to accommodate the bolt in their rear rotor), and slide the lock body shut onto the rotor. A clever mechanism activates the alarm only when it's clamped to a rotor and not just locked shut for storage. Turn the key back (you can't pull it out while the lock is open), pull it out, and let go of the whole thing real quick to not set off the alarm, and it's done. It'll beep once to let you know the alarm's set, and blink a red LED periodically. If it's jolted by anyone afterwards, it'll emit warning chirps, then set off the siren for 15 seconds. To unlock, do the same in reverse, but smoothly and quickly to not set off the alarm yourself (it's deactivated when the lock body slides off the rotor). For me, the negatives of this lock are: the alarm isn't ear-splittingly loud and only sounds for 15 seconds at a time. Were I to do this over, I'd get the non-alarmed version of this lock https://www.amazon.com/Abus-Sledge-Brake-Disc-Lock/dp/B003EIJMF4 and use the 40 dollar difference to buy a cheap alarmed lock to use on the rear rotor. ... show more
