Description

More games, crafts and skills Forest School style, building on the success of Play the Forest School Way. This book is organized by season to encourage kids to get outdoors come rain, shine or snow! Following on from the bestselling Play the Forest School Way, here is a brilliant selection of brand-new games, crafts and activities to get kids developing new skills and exploring the natural world all year round. Structured around the four seasons of the year, each chapter is packed full of step-by-step Forest School games and activities that harmonize with the weather and what’s happening in nature at that time of year, with a nod to seasonal festivals such as Easter and Christmas. In spring, for example, you could make a mud birthday cake to celebrate Earth Day on 22 April, or (inspired by bird song) craft sistrums from sticks and bottle tops, or make a clay hare and enjoy dandelion tea and a chocolate egg hunt at a spring day out. At Forest School, children return to the same location again and again, building a lasting connection with a specific part of the natural world, and this book in its year-round approach will bring this aspect of Forest School play to the fore. Each of the four seasonal chapters includes a description of an extended session (combining active and quieter activities plus, for some, an idea for foraging/cooking) to guide Forest School leaders planning themed days and parents looking for party inspiration or nature days out. The Forest School ethos of nature-based play and learning that encourages children to develop confidence, self-esteem and emotional intelligence is exactly what’s needed in an era when childhood problems such as obesity and anxiety are on the rise. Woven through the year are stories from the authors’ own Forest School classes, as they make a passionate case for the importance of ensuring children’s access to nature and the incredible benefits they will gain from being outside, even in the heart of a city. • Fabulous Introduction to Sharing Nature with Children
With the very British feel to this unique resource, just perusing it transported me back to England in the wooded area and fields north of Fairford near where we lived - visiting our tree friends and hedgrow residents wth my oldest daughter. Has very nice outdoor learning activities that I plan to now use with her 5 year old son once the snow melts down some here in Montana. While not comprehensive, it is a lovely introduction to Forest School activities that work well with small groups of children. Wish I'd had this resource while home educating my children 1989-2005. While I grew up near wooded areas and spent much free time exploring and learning, this book is useful and valuable for those with little to no outdoor/woodland experience. ... show more

  • Incredible tool for childhood inspiration! Did not disappoint.
My 10 year old and I have been going through this together and we both love it! So many great ideas that inspire but don’t dictate. Incredible tool for childhood inspiration.

  • Good for Pre-School to Grade School Age
I'm personally interested in quite a few of these activities, even as an adult. They have activities mostly groups as Age 3+, 4+, and 6+ in the book. It's an easy to read book and I would say this book is a nice compilation of items that I don't even have on my Pinterest board of a similar theme. I'll give it a five stars. ... show more

  • Love!
This book is awesome for someone that’s looking to start a forest school, work at a forest school or even just to try to get more time in outside!

  • Not really a year
There’s not really a year of outdoor play. There’s several activities ranging but not a full year! It’s a cute book though. I don’t know if I’d honestly recommend it though. But I’m not going to give it less stars based on that because it’s an opinion.
