  • Must-have for wired PC retro gaming
Color: Gray Edition
My wife needed a replacement controller for 8-bit and 16-bit retro gaming on her Windows PC, as well as some more modern titles. I use 8bitdo’s SN30 Pro 2, which has been terrific, but she’s never liked the extended palm rests of modern controllers, nor did she really need wireless capability. This was the perfect fit for her needs, and it’s of very solid quality. Worked instantly with her games, and she is very happy. ... show more

  • It's only okay but probably the best
Color: SN Edition
Disclaimer: This review would be a 3.5 if I could make it one, but I feel gifting a 4 over a 3 would be disingenuous towards how I feel about the product. As far as controllers that manage to emulate the feel, weigh, and usability of the original SNES controller, the SN30 Pro does either just that or close enough. Of course, it has the addition or additional shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, and a different orientation and placement for the start and select buttons, but with all that, it still feels premium and feels almost the same if not better than the SNES controller I have next to it. However, there are a few too many problems with this device that should be barebones simple to use. Setting it up on a Switch (which my review is based on) requires you to enable "Pro Controller Wired Connection" in the Settings of your console. Doing so resulted in, well, nothing. Nothing would happen. I had rebooted the console, turned it off and back on (different from selecting "Restart" in the power menu), and also tried a separate dock - nothing worked. Somehow, on a second try or all the aforementioned steps, it decided to work. I did nothing different, didn't follow any advanced steps, it just refused to work. It's also worth noting that this one is a replacement for one I had received earlier showing the same problems and I was destined to prove to myself that there's no way I'd receive two broken controllers back-to-back. I'm not sure if this is a showing of their poor build quality, or the supplier storing them someway that causes issues, or something of that nature. In any case, it was not what I was expecting from something as simple as a USB controller - I've had dozens over the years and this was hands down the only one to give me this amount of trouble with just having it become recognized. Next problem. The controller doesn't support HD rumble - which is clearly stated on the site, the FAQ, and the manual - however, it sometimes just does not support levels of differentiating rumble in games. What's this mean? Lemme exmaplin - Mario Maker 2 is a recent Switch game that, if played with Joycons or a Pro Controller, utilizes different rumble intensities. Walking through a door has a rumble, running and getting a boost has a rumble, ground pounds have a rumble. Almost everything has a rumble in this game. Almost none of them actually rumble with this controller. You hear a noise that sounds like the rumble motors are attempting to move, but it's simply just a small noise that will get grating and then, obviously, make you realize how much the controller rumbles in some games. HOWEVER, DK Tropical Freeze utilizes just one rumble setting. Every rumble is the same, the only difference may be how long that rumble goes for, but the intensity is the same. The SN30 Pro rumbles normally there. Why is this? It's simply because the SN30 Pro, in the Switch's eyes, is a Pro Controller which supports HD rumble. This does not. Therein lies the problem. There are some good though. The feel of this controller rivals the standard SNES one in many ways. My SNES controller has been in my possession since the original SNES - so it's older. I have an SNES Classic controller which feels about the same, but this one feels better in many regards. The controller has a nice weight to it that does away with the idea that Chinese clones or "inspired" products feel cheap. If this controller is anything, cheap is not the word. The analog sticks themselves are entirely uncomfortable to use, but I can't imagine anyone using them unless it's for PSX emulation or something of that nature. The d-pad is where this product shines through and through. The style of the branding on the controller is also really nice to. I like the color scheme paying a homage to the original SNES colors, but doing is tastefully without feeling like a rip-off. The controllers no longer say 8BITDO GAMEPAD on the top in a font similar to the one saying Super Nintendo on the SNES controllers, but it simple says 8BitDo SN30 pro in a nice serif font. It feels, in its own right, premium. Like the title of this review says, this controller isn't the best. It has it's own bout of problems, but as it stands when it comes to SNES controllers that aren't made by Nintendo, or controllers with decent dpads, this is probably the best. It has problems with rumble and has initial connectivity issues, but the controller has made playing side scrollers on my Switch more fun, easier to control, and give me a small rush of nostalgia simply from hearing the keys click like they used to when playing games on the living room floor. For all its problems, the SN30 Pro also has its delights. For that, it'd be a solid 3.5, but gifting a 4 on Amazon is almost like saying "it's perfect, but this one thing is only good" and that's not the case here sadly. ... show more

  • Great gamepad, but doesn't reach a full 5 stars, unfortunately, and I'll explain why...
Color: SN Edition
I've been following 8Bitdo's product line for a while, and I had always been curious to try out one of their controllers, even more so when they somehow managed to take the SNES controller design and add analog sticks and 2 extra shoulder buttons. However, I was always hesitant to do so, because I just prefer wired USB over Bluetooth when it comes to using a controller on a PC. When I saw that 8bitdo had recently released a wired USB version of the SN30 Pro, and for a cheaper price than its wireless version, I finally took a leap at it. I've had this controller for a couple of weeks, because I had wanted to give it some playtime before I wrote a review on this thing, now here are my impressions of it... This controller feels quite good. As mentioned before, they took the SNES controller design and added on analog sticks and 2 extra shoulder buttons, which is good for newer 3D games, and despite these additions, it still feels comfortable in my hands (your personal experience may vary depending on the size of your hands), and it's the best carbon copy of what I grew up with that I've ever used, by far. The turbo function is quite handy, and the vibration is a nice feature of its own as well. I'd like to try out Retroflag's USB gamepad sometime, but I digress. The buttons feel good, the D-pad feels good too, not like the Tomee SNES shaped USB gamepad, which the D-Pad on that felt like complete mush, so I've learned my lesson: You get what you pay for. Now here is the reason why this controller didn't reach 5 stars from me: the diagonal inputs on the D-Pad are a little oversensitive. the casual gamer might not notice, but the more invested gamers will, because some games have tricks that you can pull off (like Super Metroid's wall jump for example), and when you're in the middle of doing a maneuver that requires hitting left and right, or up and down, sometimes a diagonal input will end up registering instead and disrupt said maneuver. It can get annoying, but maybe after some more time and use, the d-pad could break in and lose its oversensitive diagonals. Two more thing, and these are only personal nitpicks: 1. I wish 8bitdo had kept the old designs that made their controllers look more like the SNES controllers, like with the two buttons being purple and the other two lavender, and with the angled start and select buttons, but it's not a deal-breaker, and this gamepad is quality built for sure. 2. I don't know if it's just me, but when plugged into my laptop, the controller seems to keep my laptop from going into sleep mode, and I don't know if there's a remedy for that or not. Again, not a major deal-breaker for me, and I can just unplug the controller when I'm not using it. Closing thoughts: 8bitdo, you really should invest more into making USB counterparts of your controllers, but that's just me! I know you're making an SN30 Pro with grips on it, so if you made a USB version of that, it'd be just as awesome. UPDATE as of 7/16/19: I've gotten around to playing some games that utilize the analog sticks and the digital trigger-like buttons, and the analog sticks feel great and responsive! It barely gets uncomfortable for me at times (which I'm basically saying it doesn't strain my hands). If I could give my rating for this controller 4 and a half stars instead of just 4, I would. ... show more
