  • Not a Puzzle but a Paper Model (and a frustrating one at that)
Style: Mini Hogwarts Castle
This series is not a puzzle...there is nothing to try and solve or figure out like a jigsaw puzzle. If you want a true 3D puzzle of this same subject then look into the Wrebbit Harry Potter line. They are actual jigsaw puzzles that you then assemble into a model. These 4D sets are basically "punch out books" on steroids: card-stock paper that is precut so you punch it out and then through a series of folds, tabs and slots, put the model together. There are step by step instructions and the pieces are numbered so it's more like doing a "paper lego" model then puzzle. I first bought and assembled the Diagon Alley set and was pleased with how they went together and how the finished product looked so I then bought this set. However, this one got way too ambitious in design. The crux of these assemblies is putting a tab in a slot...the slots are cut slightly thinner and narrower then the slot so that a forced fit results and that interference locks the tab in place. This works fine for simple assemblies where you only have to line up a few tabs to slots which is what happens when you build Hogwarts..you put together a few sub-assemblies and then put them together on a paper base to form the major assembly. This works fine for the astronomy tower section but the Great Hall has way too many intricate interfaces between mating sub-assemblies...at one point you've assembled 3/4 of the entire section and then you are supposed to line up dozens of tabs to slots on the base and mount it which is just impossible. This is paper and there is no allowance for tolerances in the design; IOW any minor mistake you made in assembling each piece gets all summed together at the end when you try to mount it all together. I ended up disassembling several sections so I could even access the tabs that needed to be assembled and rebuilt it. I was able to get that done successfully after a few tries but by then you've put the tabs in the slots and removed them several times and now the slots are elongated and no longer lock the tabs. what's worse is the base is a flat piece of card-stock and the tabs protrude so the model actually rests on the tabs which puts tension on the tabs and causes them to pop out. Gluing tabs isn't always the answer either because when you are having to say place one of the turrets you are having to align four slots that go in the base and two that go onto a wall, another tab that goes into an opposite wall and you have to clear a tight cutout in the roof. So you need the pieces to actually bend and flex a bit to "pop" into place and you can't do that with a glued joint. I could never get the turrets to lock in place or get the "rock-work" to...work. The rocks have tabs that you have to bend...and once you bend a tab its impossible to push it into place. So i could never get the Great Hall to really lock together and had to use tape in spots which looks bad. So if you do want to still try making these, i would recommend you start with one of the smaller sets first before doing any of the Hogwarts Castle sets. Good luck. ... show more

  • Can't wait to finish!
Style: Mini Hogwarts Castle
My daughter and I are slowly putting this together, we are currently only a few pages in to the instructions.. so far, I am SLIGHTLY disappointed in how it is constructed.. im going to have to super glue some of this together where technically a puzzle should work without it. That being said, this is our first ever 3D puzzle.. and even though it's super cool, I can't help but wish it went together without easily breaking the cardboard pieces. ... show more

  • Amazing
Style: Astronomy Tower
We love it! It's pretty big, but oh my gosh was it fun to put together. Now we just need to glue it and find a place for it.

  • Assembling is rewarding.
Style: Mini Hogwarts Castle
Only drawback is trying to connect the two sections together.

Amazing and fun to put together. I'm good at 3d puzzles but this one gave me a bit of a challenge and I love it

  • Instructions poorly done! Completely backwards.
Style: Mini Hogwarts Castle
Buyers be aware.... The instructions are written backwards. They have you constructing the model from the top down. When it should be from the base up. It is very hard to put everything into the base after everything is done. Not everything snaps on easily. A lot of tight places, might need to glue some areas first. Other than that, it's a nice project. LOTS OF PATIENCE NEEDED! ... show more

  • Good but could be better
Style: Astronomy Tower
I purchased this to build with my child. The quality of the material could be better and stronger. Several pieces broke during the assembly and kept falling off especially when creating parts of the towers. It is a cool idea for a 3D puzzle. It took us 9 hours to finish building this. i am definitely not buying the other set to complete Hogwarts. ... show more
