  • Thread Chaser set
Great product for chasing bolt threads! Quick delivery by great seller.

  • Great for softer metals, offset heads?
Some of the thread chasers seem to have been machined slightly offset, giving the illusion you're about to cross threads. I have damaged a couple of the dyes on harder metals, however I knew before attempting it was likely to happen. I've been using this kit in a professional environment for awhile now and I'm pretty happy with it. Great kit for the oddball damaged fasteners. ... show more

  • An excellent dedicated thread chaser set.
The first thing I want to point out to folks looking at this is the fact that this is indeed a *chaser* set. Yes, they are still called taps and dies, but you wouldn't want to cut fresh threads with this set it's not designed for that. I should also point out that this is for "larger" fasteners. If you need something for small fasteners - perhaps for a mechanical hobby like RC Crawlers or the like this won't help you. A hobby rethread set is what you want. Having said that, this set is excellent for repairing and/or cleaning up existing threads even if they seem in decent shape. I cleaned up some rusted threads and relubricated and they are like new again. The die did not cut a ton of material off which is what I want to see in a repair set. These are claimed to be heat treated. I'm getting around HRC 60 on the Rockwell scale. Very nice. So long as their methods are consistent that's what you can expect. The color coding seems to be consistent among many brands but it's still nice to have. The thread files are great for those times you get a really mangled thread where a die would be complaining. LAST thing you want to do is snap off a stud. (Or God forbid snap a tap in a hole! Been there!) This kit is right there with some "brand name" sets, but at about half the cost. One last tip: Lubricate, lubricate, lubricate! ... show more

  • Great chaser set
Has most every thread chaser for male and female threads that you'll need to get started with. I've used them pretty heavily and they seem to be holding up without dulling.

  • Nice set for both Metric and SAE.
This is a great set for metric & SAE threads. This is also a "Proper" set for cleaning up existing threads. Just understand that this isn't a regular tap set and isn't designed for that. Great price for a set like this.

  • Does the trick!
I think this is the perfect set for the weekend mechanic. Obviously this won’t be suitable for a professional mechanic but they do a darn good job for what they cost. I got this set originally because I had one bolt hole thats been giving me trouble. This set fixed that up just right. I can’t wait to use it again to clean out some threads and help me with some engine builds. ... show more

  • These get the job done, but the build quality is substandard.
Here's the important part, I guess: these work ok, and they do what they're supposed to. For most automotive repair situations, these are what you want, not taps and dies but thread restorers. They clean up rough threads without cutting too deep and compromising the fastener, This particular set, however, has some issues. I've tested these out and found that a good number of the dies are cast slightly lopsided, so as you spin them down the threads they are visibly wobbling back and forth. While this partly just looks cheap, it also presents an issue with getting it started since it's difficult to visually gauge if you have the die lined up correctly or it's cross-threaded. That being said, after some repeated use these do seem to be just as durable as any other thread chasers I've used, including the US made Snap-On branded set. It's been my experience that none of these last forever - they're all wear items and they're eventually going to need replacement especially if you use them on high grade hardened steel fasteners. The other issue I have is with the case, which is wildly cheap and doesn't do its job of holding all the pieces in place when you pick it up. It's molded poorly, and the case halves don't come together all the way. I had to use spray adhesive and some extra foam and glue it into the top of the case so everything wouldn't fall apart whenever I picked it up. You want my advice? If you're not receiving this as a freebie like I did, just do yourself a favor and get the Kastar/Lang Tools 48 piece "971" kit. It's US made (last I checked) and the same thing that Snap On sells for a far better price. Yeah it's not as cheap but if you can pony up another $30-$35 or so it's probably worth it. Either that or find yourself a set that includes the extra sizes that this one doesn't, because there's not a lot of advantages to choosing this kit as far as I'm concerned. ... show more
