  • This Telephoto Lens is better than Expected
*: Black
I have been a photographer for a long time. My first impression was that this very light and inexpensive telephoto lens would not be up to par. Boy, was I surprised when I compared images with my original Canon EFS 55/250mm zoom lens with image stabilizer. Please notice that Benoison lens does not have electronic contacts as the after-mentioned Canon lens. To use it in my Canon T3i, one must set controls to "M" (manual). I used the camera's dial to select the sensibility ISO setting, 400ISO. There is no f-number displayed, "f0". But seeing results are worth a thousand words. For reference, first image taken with Canon lens 55mm, one can barely see the lighthouse located about 1.5 miles (2.5km) away. Of course when taking ultra zoom/telephoto images, a tripod AND shutter controller is essential for good results. This is very important when using this telephoto lens, a slight movement will result in a blurred picture. On another image, one can compare the quality between the Canon zoom at 250mm and Benoison at 420mm. There is some exposure differences between the two, Canon auto-selected f-22, quite a higher depth of field (better focused). The last image is Benoison at its strongest zoom power, 800mm. Not the quality of an original Canon telephoto lens worth hundreds of dollars, but acceptable for an amateur photographer. In conclusion, I think that this lens is great for the beginner photographer that wants to enter the possibilities of telephoto imaging. Not engaging the automatic functions of the camera, using manual functions is a great way to engage in the learning curve of photography. ... show more

  • Nice for the Amateur Photographer
*: Black
Hubby and I are by no means experts at photography with our DSLR cameras, but we love learning, so this lens at this price point offers us a chance to build our skill set and hopefully get some really great pictures. This is by far our biggest telephoto lens, and with it being all manual, it was a steep learning curve for us. Luckily there is a minimalistic instruction manual to give some insights as to how to set up your ISO and shutter speeds while IN MANUAL MODE, but it's a learning process that still takes time. It's definitely not a "plug and play" autofocus lens. I can't even imaging learning on a film camera where I can't see immediate results, so this lens with a DSLR camera is great learning combo. At first we couldn't get the focus to work, but we forgot to tighten the external ring between the zoom lock and lens mount. Once we did this, it was not longer "free spinning" and the focus works. Our bad for such a ditzy mistake lol! Honestly, we think this is a great lens - probably because we are amateurs and this is our biggest zoom lens. We take about 15 bad shots for every 1 good shot, but we find those single shots to be amazing. It just takes us that many iterations as amateurs to get the settings to that provide a decent picture. Even with a tripod, it's really difficult to get the movement and shake down so that it minimally impacts the picture, but like I said, we're still learning. Overall, it's a good entry point lens for a really good zoom. I think most manual zoom lenses are in the same price range, but name brands might cost a bit more. For the price, this is nice lens for the amateur photographer and we would recommend it. The instructions aren't that great hence the 1 star deduct, so it will take some playing around to get your bearings but definitely worth it! ... show more

  • A bit of a learning curve with this F8.3-16 manual lens, but some very impressive results
*: Black
Don’t be fooled by the modest price of this 420-800mm telephoto zoom lens. It well made and the optics are quite good. For many, the biggest drawback will be that it is entirely manual—no auto focus, no autoexposure, e.g. But for those of us who predate the introduction of such conveniences in the late ‘70s, it’s kind of a refresher course that harkens back to what was, in many respects, a simpler time. Weighing just 1 lb. 4.8 oz., it’s about half the weight of a Canon fixed 400mm lens and about the same 10-inch length when retracted. That’s compact enough to tempt me to shoot it handheld, but a tripod or some other support is strongly advised. A tripod mount rotates to allow for quick landscape/portrait transitioning. The focus and zoom functions are smooth. The zoom lock/open ring must be tightened to change the focal length and allow the focusing ring to turn. Note that if it is too loose, there is a small wobble between the front and rear of the lens. Not good. Keep it snug. There is a red alignment dot for mounting the lens to the camera body; the connection is easy and secure. I’m delighted that the minimum focusing distance is 3m /10ft. There is a bit of green and purple fringing, but no edge blur or distortion. A polishing cloth, user manual and leatherette drawstring carrying bag are included. ... show more
