  • All in all I'm impressed!
First impressions: this is a very cute, good size tank for beginners or those not wanting a lot of work. Took me all of 10 minutes to set up tops. The light works well but I was hoping it was one you could change the colors. There's another review that shows it with a blue LED tone and that is a very accurate depiction, you cannot change it from that color. I'll probably end up buying an aftermarket one to use instead. Also, the filter floss rectangles I've never worked with before and had to do some research on. My only complaint with those was even though I rinsed it in the sink first it put all these little "hairs" in the water. I used the included net to take some out and am hoping the filter works out the rest before fish are added in a few days. However it seems they're a cheaper alternative long term to traditional carbon inserts. All in all as someone who has had several novice tanks in the past decade, this is an amazing starter tank, especially for the price. It's an attractive, quiet tank that was priced incredibly well considering anything else like this was either $50+ or only had <4 stars. I'm giving it 5 stars considering my only feed back would be a more neutral toned light (or an option to change the color) and the included filter inserts leaving hairs when first installed. (Mine came with 2 different looking floss filters so maybe the other kind is better) ... show more

  • Better than a pickle jar
This would make a good starter tank for someone who wants a Betta, doesn't have the money/time/energy for a properly sized tank, but also doesn't want to torture the fish in a small bowl or vase like I've seen. Setup is easy - basically route the wires through, assemble the pump, and you're done. The glass (and yes, it's glass) is very clear and feels sturdy. The tank works decently well but does have some quirks and irritations. The pump is too strong for this size of tank, especially since it's marketed as a Betta tank. The flow should be consistent but gentle. It took our Betta a couple days to find the right spots in the tank where the water is more still. There are cutouts on the back of the lid for the cables, but because of the design they get caught/shift whenever you open the lid. The included light is really bright. Like, our fish hid for days when it was turned on level bright. It should definitely be enough to grow some plants, but our fish wouldn't even come out for food when it was on. Finally, there's no feeding hole in the lid which means vacations are no longer permitted. Well, actually it meant that I drilled a hole through the lid, designed a 3D printed part to funnel the food from our automatic feeder into a straw, and pulled the straw through the lid. It works fine, but wasn't something I wanted to tackle the day before our trip when my daughter realized her fish was about to be very, very hungry. ... show more

  • I do like it, but I don't fully love it.
To start with, 2 gallons is too small for a male betta. It might make a nice little project for a nano or shrimp tank, but I wouldn't house a fully-grown betta in this. Currently for me it serves as a little hospital tank, ironically for my betta, and it works well for that. It feels EXTREMELY sturdy. I can't say I followed the claim of the description of dropping it to confirm it won't break but this feels thicker than a generic 10 gallon. I actually felt fully comfortable carrying this thing around while it's full of water. It's nice that this set has a filter as well as light. The net is a nice bonus, but it's way too shallow for fish in my opinion. Most critters will jump right off that, but it would be fantastic for skimming off floating plants, so even if you don't find a use for this aquarium, you'll find it elsewhere. The light is a cool white color which is fine, but I do wish there was a type of brightness adjustment. I'm not sure this tank works with sand either, since it sounds like the filter picked up a couple grains. Nothing to impede the functionality, but I hear it rattling in there. The filter set up itself is quite interesting, though. They give you several little floss pads to start which is great, the rest you can customize. There's space for a little carbon (which you'll have to put in a baggie), sponge or other filter media (or a mix of them). The water outlet flows into a tiny chamber that you can fill with whatever you like. I currently only have java fern in there, so I can't vouch for what the light does for general plant growth, but it does at least light up the tank well. I don't think this is for beginners (at least not at 2 gallons), anyone in the fish hobby will know that smaller water volume = more work and risk due to water quality fluctuations. But if you know what you're doing this is honestly an extremely interesting little project tank (or a nice hospital tank) that feels great. The lid is rather thin but that's not an issue. Has 4 holes for cable management (in case you want to add a heater or bubbler you can, the light and filter use up 2) I do like it a lot, but due to the water volume and what it's advertised for (Betta) I knocked off a star. Definitely not for Bettas, unless it's a small/young female maybe and you're experienced. But other than that, I actually recommend it, that glass is quite the experience! The rounded corners are quite enjoyable ... show more

  • Perfect home for a betta
The kit provides everything needed to get set up. Nice quality and simple tank setup. I love having this on my art/craft working table so the betta keeps me company as I create. The closed tank cover keeps the cats out as they view this new household addition that mesmerizes them as he swims around and flaunts his billowing fins. So entertaining and relaxing and an amusing subject for working in my art journal as well or water coloring greeting cards with a fanciful fish design. ... show more
