  • A cross between a toy and a real instrument. But leaning towards a toy
I have a niece who we're very close with who is having her first baby. Her husband loves music and plays in a band with a small group of his friends. He's the drummer. We came across this Xylophone online while searching for a Christmas present for the new baby. It looked like something they would appreciate. This Xylophone is a little bigger and more sophisticated than most of the ones I've seen in children's toy boxes. The little metal plates are colored and marked with their associated note but for the most part look like the ones you see in toys - only there's more of them. There are 15 full notes and 10 flats. Using the hard plastic round ended mallets provided, the notes sound clear and ring for an extended period. And, even though I'm not musical, I can tell the range of notes from high to low is much more extended than you see in toys. I think a lot of this improved sound is due to the better-quality steel used in the metal bars and the design of the simple looking plastic case. The case is made of hard plastic and has a tapered shape to mimic the lengths of the keyboard metal plates. On the bottom three metal bars can be extended to raise the Xylophone off the ground. And while you're looking at the bottom, you'll notice the numerous venting holes on the bottom that will help release the music from the box when playing. Inside the bottom of the case, underneath the bars, there are pairs of raised plastic rails that support the metal bars. Each of the bars is isolated from these rails with a soft foam rubber. And each metal bar is very loosely held to the rails with a plastic wrapped metal stud. (Note: the hole for these mounting studs is large enough to allow the removal of each bar if necessary. So, the musical bars more or less float on the insulated plastic rails.) It’s a simple mounting design, in line with the cost of this instrument that lets each note ring true and for a long duration. After playing with this instrument for a little bit, it became obvious that this was not designed for a young child. The box and especially the legs are not up to potential abuse and the metal bars can be easily removed. I'm still going to give my niece this toy as a present. I'm guessing she may put it to the side for a couple of years. I definitely wouldn't put this in the toy box. That's a place for wooden Xylophones that look like an alligator and have the mallet tied on with a string. Both are fine but different. We’re liking the Xylophone. It’s really cool looking and sounds great. The price is not really over the top when you consider the price of toys nowadays. And it provides a good sound - you could actually follow simple printed music to play a song – or just play it from memory. The Xylophone is well made from solid materials. It sounds good. And would make a great present. We would recommend it especially for a family with musical ability. ... show more

  • This toy is wonderful but the description is inaccurate
So aside from the whole xylophone vs glockenspiel matter, the description states that this is a wooden instrument, and it is not. The two materials used are plastic and steel. Since this toy is for a toddler and not an actual musician, I'm not that bothered but the description should be updated to be accurate so people are not mislead by false descriptions. That being said, it's a great little toy for my toddler. The enjoys opening the little stand legs and the mallets are the perfect size for her little hands. I like that the keys are labeled with the notes and the colors correspond across octaves. However, it's very difficult to open, and unlike other glockenspiels at similar price points, this does not come with a little music booklet. It appears to be quite durable and well made, and it produces lovely sounds when my future metalhead granddaughter bangs out some rad notes while singing Twinkle Twinkle. Overall, I'm pleased with it and of course ALL the adult kids play with it for long periods of time as well (all of whom are musicians) so it's actually fun for the whole family LOL. ... show more

  • A step up from a normal kid's instrument
The media could not be loaded. I fully understand why kid's instruments generally just have the C major scale (not having any sharps or flats), because generally they want kids to be able to play the instrument and not experience anything out of key that might discourage learning. Also, many kid's songs tend to fit nicely in the C major scale. Those instruments tend to be a single octave (C to C). Unfortunately, those instruments make it a little difficult to experiment with different sounds. So, I am very glad to see a "kid's" instrument that finally includes more than one octave and the sharps and flats for those octaves. This allows for a wide variety of expression that most kid's instruments do not offer. The construction is solid and well made. It is sturdy and probably could take some abuse. It comes in a locking case and the case has foldable legs allowing it to stand a couple of inches above the ground. The back side of the casing (underneath the bars) is slotted to allow sound to travel from underneath too. In theory thing would allow for a fuller sound. I'm not sure whether or not those have a great impact on the final sound output, but it probably couldn't hurt either. The latch mechanism on the casing might be the only downside. Technically it works, but I feel like I had to push in on it a good amount to open it the first time. I'm not sure a kid would have been able to do this by themselves. The case also comes with a way to tuck the included plastic mallets underneath the bars. It's worth noting that went this shipped some of the bars were out of their holder. It was easy enough to pop them back in place. I know there's some warning labels in the description about small parts, so if your kid is susceptible to disassembling objects, you might need to keep adult supervision on them during use. As far as sound is concerned, these sound like most other kid's xylophones. The bars are pure sounding and ring out nicely. The plastic mallets give the notes a very bright attack sound. I'm sure wooden mallets would give a little more softness to the initial attack.. I am very happy with this. This is definitely a step up from a normal kid's xylophone. This is like a deluxe kid's xylophone. ... show more

  • Better than expected sound
I was anticipating a typical kids Xylophone but this one is a step up from most. The sound is really pretty good and I like the black half tone keys that are laid out similar to a piano keyboard. This allows for actually playing about any tune and not just songs in the key of C. The case is sturdy and is great for keeping the mallets secure so they don't get lost. It even has extendable feet on the bottom to raise it up which also improves the sound volume. ... show more
