  • Video review: Well designed, robust lights that are easy to travel with in my car
The media could not be loaded. Video review and test: These lights work for me, but keep in mind the fan is loud. (I use a lav mic, so the audio recording source is quite a ways from the lights themselves). Pros: - Love the barn doors - Long cable - Easily make one the master and the other the slave - They stay cool - Diffuser included. Downsides: - Diffuser is hard to get out (it slides in). But I just leave it in all the time, so it's not problem for me and my uses. - As mentioned, the fans can be loud and you'll pick them up if you have high-end boom mic recording equipment. Overall, they work for my films. 5/5 stars. Hope this helps! ... show more

  • Good bi-color lights at a fair price
I'm a fan of high-quality LED lights. I have seven or eight of another brand of lights, but because I love my GVM slider so much, so I thought I'd give the GVM LED lights a try. My first impression is that they're very light weight. Is that a problem? Not necessarily. If you're using these in a studio and not moving them around on location, you'll be fine. If you do use them on location, you'll want to be sure to put a sandbag on the stand so the whole thing doesn't go over in a gust of wind (which you should do with any light stand, anyway). But you also won't need to be a weight lifter to move them around from location to location. So that's a plus. The lights are very bright, when set at color temperature 4400K, which is exactly in the middle of the color-temperature range, when all the LEDs are at full brightness. When you're at either end of the spectrum, 3200K or 5600K, as with all bi-color lights, the brightness is considerably lower (because it's only using half the LEDs). This is not a dealbreaker, however. All my other lights are set permanently at 5600K, and many times I've wished I could warm up a hair light or back light. The ability to dial in just a touch of warmth is a great option, even with the tradeoff of less-intense light. Generally I have to run hair lights at a much lower intensity anyway, so this will not be a problem for me. The included diffuser plates soften the light even more. The problem is, no matter how hard I tried I could not get the diffusion to go all the way into the diffusion slot. I even loosened the screws on the barn doors, which provide the frame for the diffusion panel to slide into. I don't know if the diffusion plates are too wide, or if there's some other obstruction, but I could only get it to go in about 7/8 of the way. Others have mentioned this issue, so this is something GVM should look into. In practical operation this will not be a problem for me (since I'm only lighting a greenscreen with these lights), but in a pinch you could just hold the diffusion against the lights with the barn doors slightly closed, or clip other diffusion to the wide-open doors, so it's not a huge deal. Still, it's something that should be fixed in future production runs. The built-in barn doors are nice for flagging the light off your lens, but as with all LED lights of this style, you won't get a hard cut. Everyone should know that already, but I mention it just in case you didn't. The doors are plastic, but they're also embossed with a waffle-like grid pattern that should keep them from breaking. Being plastic also keeps their weight down, which is nice. One thing to note, is the loudness of the fan. As soon as you get to 70% power, the fan kicks in. As long as you're at least about six feet away, I don't think the fan noise will be an issue. If, however, you must have absolute silence from your equipment during an interview, you'll need to run these lights at 69% or lower, to keep the fan from kicking in. I suspect this is an issue related to the fact that there isn't much metal in the construction of these lights, which would act as a natural heat sink. My main use for these lights will be to light my greenscreen. Since these lights will be at least 6-8 feet behind my talent, and 6-8 feet off to the side, I don't think fan noise will be an issue for me. I like the option of putting the power brick up into the yoke of the light. It clamps in with an adapter buckle to keep it secure. This also keeps the power brick together with the light. I generally run my lights far enough away from extension cords, that I'll probably end up just taking it out of the yoke and using the full length of the cable to reach the outlet. But if you're in a studio or blogger situation with these lights, having the power brick secure in the yoke will be a good thing, to keep it from getting damaged underfoot. The cable that goes into the power brick is not a standard IEC C13, it's a C5 (see chart above), so you'll want to make sure you don't lose it. My lights came with a built-in V-mount battery plate, which would be great for portable, run-and-gun use. I don't use V-mount batteries, but if I did, this would be a big deal for portability. It also comes with a D-tap adapter pigtail. The included stands are by no means heavy weight, but they are more than adequate for these lights. The sections are tubular, which means each section can rotate freely if needed. The friction locks feel like they'll last a long time, and though the stand isn't stiff, it does take a little elbow grease to spread the legs. This keeps the stand more sturdy, so this is actually a benefit. Each stand comes with a nice velveteen bag that will keep the stands from knocking around with your other gear and getting scarred up. Again, for bloggers or others on a budget, it's great that the stands are included with the lights. The clamps on the side hold the light in position very nicely. The light head itself is pretty lightweight, but still it's nice to have clamps that actually do their job. They have little teeth in them, so once you set the position of the light and lock down the clamp, it'd be virtually impossible for the light to move. This is very handy for when the light is out of reach on a boom, and you don't want to have to keep adjusting it. I do wish some sort of bag for the lights was included, but at this price I can afford to buy a bag, so again, not a dealbreaker. The lights can be controlled from an App. The included documentation has a QR code, but that takes you to the website, and at least on the mobile version I couldn't find the app to download. I simply searched the Google Play store for "GVM Easily," and downloaded the app. I used the documentation leaflet to learn how to connect to wifi (the default password is also included). Once I logged on to the light's wifi and opened the app, I was able to control both the color temperature and intensity. Note that there's about a 1-second delay, so don't plan on instant changes. But for most applications, that is not a problem. If you have both lights on the same group number, the app will control both simultaneously. It's nice to have the ability to adjust the lights when they're out of reach. Plus, at this price, it's a big value add. Without the app, you can put one light in slave mode, so that adjusting the master light, will adjust the slave. But when you have the app connected to the master, and with the other in slave mode, you can control **both** lights with the app. Very handy. All in all, for less than $120 per light/stand ($92 each in the 3-pack!!), you really can't go wrong. If you're looking for a well-built, well-thought-out light for a budget price, you've found it. ... show more

  • Versatile studio lights at a fair price.
These lights are well-made and offer a range of brightness settings and color temperatures. Even better, they have built-in cooling fans for brighter settings and the fan-noise has not been a significant issue in video sound recording. The light stands are sturdy and have robust tightening knobs. The knobs on cheaper lamps and stands will break if over-torqued. The barn doors are cute and somewhat helpful. V-mount batteries can be purchased separately to allow use outside the studio. ... show more

  • Great kit!
I have had these for a couple weeks now and they are incredibly easy to set up and well built. These lights are superb, dimmable and can change the temperature of the light with the barndoors.I love how bright they get and how easy they transition to yellow or white. and the barndoors are so good for containing the lighting where I want it to go, especially grand for close ups and portraits. ... show more

  • Good but not what I need
I liked the build of this light but sadly I have to return it because it is too bright for what I need. Also because it is shaped in a rectangle, it is difficult to control. The barn doors are good but leave a noticeable pattern on the photo. Overall good light just not right for my needs.
