  • Nice finish, lots of pieces in the set.
Number of Items: 5
This is a nice kit that comes with just about everything apart from an adapter for smaller diameter arbors. The discs have a very nice finish that completely coats the metal. I have a lot of rasps and a few discs of this type, and I am always careful to check out the teeth. There are some imperfections in these... you can see in the photos that are there are a few teeth with bends or with the tip snapped off. Thankfully these are rare, but they will affect the cut quality a little bit. I'd rather get one less disc but have perfect teeth on the remaining ones. Haven't had a chance to carve with them yet, but I did mount them on a grinder to check the balance. No wobble or off axis tilt. The included wrench is quite handy as it is a backup in case I lose my OEM wrenches. Given the price the kit is pretty good value even with a few flaws, so long as it cuts well. ... show more

  • Generous Array of Scary Tools
Number of Items: 13
Seven wood carving disks, six flap disks, three washer/bushings and a handy, adjustable angle grinder wrench are all included for a very reasonable 36 bucks. The six flap disks are standard fare with 5/8" bore. Five of the carving disks are essentially round rasps that have varied profiles; they're sharp and appear made to last. They have a 7/8" bore but use a washer or two to get down to a 5/8" bore for an angle grinder. The wood-cutting blade has a thin washer that pops out if you use the washer/bushings to get down to a 5/8" bore. The chain disk has a 5/8" bore. I chose to use a 1940s flexible shaft grinder to test these abrasion disks because I felt more comfortable with the flex shaft's much higher torque and slower 3450 rpm than some angle grinder spinning crazily at 9,000 rpm. I'm carving a large elm burl that's been drying in my garage for years. The flap disks felt safest to use and performed as expected. The rasps also felt easy to control at low rpm and bit away large volumes of wood quickly and easily. The wood-cutting blade was more than a bit scary. it was the only disk that was accompanied with any instruction for use. I never felt really comfortable with it, nor do I advise getting comfortable with this inherently dangerous device. But I'm keeping it in my toolbox and will probably use it occasionally in a tight spot when nothing else works. The chainsaw disk is another animal entirely. This is a tragedy waiting to happen. The chainsaw disk arrived with no instruction and three clips holding the chain to the double disks. Take the clips off only after you've secured the disks onto the angle grinder or whatever power tool you've chosen, or else the whole assemble falls apart. Pay careful attention to the rotation direction, and send up a prayer before you begin. Yeah, it eats up wood like chainsaw, but without guards, safety switches or deadman triggers, this thing should scare the life out of you. The disks feel cheap and lightweight and who knows where the chain came from, adding to the power tool terror. I plan to use the chainsaw disk in a sculptural assemblage, perhaps with a Halloween theme. Otherwise, it's going in the trash. The lack of any user manual is a problem, but not insurmountable: There is a host of similar disks on Amazon and other websites, so you can learn how to use them and learn what others fear in their comments. If you don't need the flap disks, you can get just the five rasp disks and wrench for $27 from the same vendor -- maybe a wiser choice. Because of the potential usefulness of the flap disks and rasp disks, I'm comfortable giving it three stars, but no more than that because the dangerous wood cutting blade and the bloody chainsaw nightmare. I consider myself lucky to have tried it and lived to tell the tale. ... show more

  • For heavy duty very rough wood grinding only
Number of Items: 5
I tested these discs on wood using my Milwaukee variable speed angle grinder set at about 5000 rpm. The discs fit a standard angle grinder with 7/8” arbor rings. These discs will hog off a serious amount of stock quickly, but lack versatility for uses other than rough fast work. For example, I might use these to round over and shape the top of a stump before refining it with other products such as medium to fine grinding discs and flap wheels. Because these discs are so aggressive in their cutting, there is no way to carve a straight channel with them (as attempted in my photo), nor would I attempt to use them to carve out a chair seat, as it is too difficult to finely control the path of a cut. I think they are good quality and value for money for rough work. I spent some time grinding with these and didn’t see any wear to the cutting teeth afterwards. ... show more

  • Good carving disks, very aggressive
Number of Items: 5
The disks in the set are well made and centered. I didn't see any vibration of the angle grinder when using these disks at 12.000 RPM. The "teeth" on the disks are very sharp. Also, I like the variety of the shapes of the disks in the set - they seem to be useable for next to any type of wood carving. The disks are very aggressive, they eat wood as if there was nothing on their way. So, be careful when using those - they are very dangerous. ... show more

  • Good for Rough Cutting.
Number of Items: 13
I am not a wood carving artist so I can’t speak to how well these cutters serve that purpose. I got these for doing rough cutting around the house. We cut down a very large pine tree two years ago. Unfortunately some of its roots which were exposed above ground were not decaying and I wanted to get rid of them. They were about five or six inches in diameter. I used the roughest cutter in this set to grind away the roots until they were below ground level and could be covered with soil. It did a good job. ... show more
