We often use wood for winter heat in our fireplace stove insert. For overnight stoking, large chunks are best and burn longer. However, splitting logs into smaller diameter pieces makes getting the fire started much easier. Used properly, this tool helps make splitting logs safer and easier. Assembly is fairly straightforward. The instruction sheet gives enough information to get it done. There was one extra screw and washer included of each type provided. I would add one (perhaps obvious) suggestion - screw all the bolts with split ring lock washers in place barely finger tight before using the provided hex wrench to fully tighten the bolts on one end. The holes don't all line up centered, but there is enough room in the holes to get all the screws started. There are also 5/16" hex head screws provided to secure the frame to a solid base. In my case, I have the top of a stump cut flat to use as a splitting base. The screws were easy to screw into the stump using a power drill and hex driver. I initially attempted to split some wood without firmly attaching the frame. Don't bother - it's neither heavy enough nor wide enough to stay in place. If you don't have the equivalent of the stump shown in the attached photos (both mine and those in the listing), find a large board, cut a round from the end of a large log, or get something similar to use as a base. The provided cover is large enough to easily hold the splitter after being assembled. I would recommend not leaving the splitter outside in weather when not being used. In my experience, this is much easier to use than either an axe or maul for splitting logs of 8" (20cm) diameter or less. The opening is slightly wider than that, but you will need the extra room when the wood splits. Getting the log started is much easier than with either an axe or maul - drop the log onto the blade until it's centered as you desire, maybe tap it with your sledgehammer, then swing away. The top of the log doesn't have to be hit dead center or even squarely. You're much less likely to get a glancing blow than with a wedge, axe, or maul. For the sample images in this review, I used the back of an axe head as the hammer (not recommended), but it still took only 5 hits to split the log shown. Obviously, the effort required will be dependent on the log size and how well it has been dried. Once split, the log doesn't fly away as is often the case with an axe or maul. One thing it doesn't really do is split into multiple smaller pieces - kindling. The portions below the blade help to spread the log to make it split, but the log splits along the line of the blade. However, because the log can be placed safely on the blade and tapped in place anywhere across the end of the log, multiple splits to make smaller pieces is both easier and safer than using a sharp axe. ... show more

    • Build quality doesn't match the cost
I've been looking for one of these log splitter gadgets in this size so I ordered this "Habit Garden Kindling Splitter 11in L", which is a full 13 1/2-inches tall and has a decently wide 8.3-inch opening up top. I was immediately disappointed to find this unit requires assembly. The top and lower rings are BOLTED in place...all other log splitters I've seen are firmly WELDED together. On top of that, the bolt heads (they are hex heads and a hex wrench is included) are VERY soft. When I tightened them down, the heads on every bolt started to strip. One actually did. I may try to remove these bolts and replace them with some normal grade 6 bolts but quite honestly I shouldn't be required to supply my own bolts. Once it was firmly assembled, I tested it. This thing REALLY needs to be bolted down to a tree stumb, large log or platform of some type. There are some bolts supplied for this purpose, but I would not trust them, they are very skinny and not nearly beefy enough. I tested the unit without bolting it down to anything. I tested using the flat side of a small-ish 6-pound maul while splitting a mix of dry oak, pine and walnut. Is it easier to split wood with this than the usual overhand-swing-with-a-maul-or-axe method? Yes. Is it a LOT easier? No, not really, and it really depends on the type of wood. Anything with knots in it will end up only partially split and you'll need to finish the job by hand. Anything green or stringy will get hung up in the unit. If your wood is dry and less than 8 inches wide, this should help quite a bit. All said, I'll find someplace where I can bolt this down firmly, and I'll probably use it a lot. On the other hand, there are similar units available all over Amazon for less cost (this was 99.99 when I ordered it) and almost all of the others are fully welded instead of bolted together. Also, almost all other units use round steel bar for the upper ring and thicker base material, where this unit uses thinner flat metal rings on top and bottom. I'm not sure the top ring will survive a strong hit from a maul mis-strike. An odd thing about this unit....the packaging smelled absolutely horrible, like a dead animal was stuffed in there. When I caught a whiff of it, I immediately took the box to my garage to open it, but it smelled so awful I needed to take it completely outside to remove it from the cardboard box and assemble it. Good thing garbage day was today, I put all that packaging in a sealed bag and tossed it in the trash so it's gone now. TLDR: I like the functionality of this unit, but I worry about the weak bolts. Overall, I expected far better build quality at this price. If I were to order one of these today, I'd get a different, less expensive brand of similar size but with welded joints and stronger upper and lower rings. ... show more

The kindling splitter I got for my father has proven to be a fantastic gift, especially considering the challenges of splitting wood in his older age. He loves it, and it has become a tremendous help for him in the process. The high-quality metal construction and straightforward assembly make it a reliable tool. One thing worth noting is that over time, the bolts holding it together have started to bend. However, it's a minor setback as I plan to replace them with higher quality ones. If I were to recommend an improvement, it would be to include sturdier bolts.
