The 8ft when fully open begins to slide closed once a reasonable amount of weight is applied. It holds better when not fully extended. It's not a push pole and should give you enough support to nudge away from the dock or keep you from banging into another boat. Should help grab dock lines and help catch straps on my truck to strap down my canoe. If you have a heavy boat you likely need to go bigger. Kayak, skiff, or light John boat should be ok ... show more

To avoid any confusion as to the product description herein under review, the actual product description as posted by the seller on his Amazon marketing webpage is: Opow Telescoping Boat Hook for Docking, Extension Pole Boat Hook Push Pole with Luminous Bead, Durable, Lightweight and Sturdy Floating, Threaded End for Boating Accessories. Price-point during this review: $21.99 - $79.99 (Note: I have no idea what this huge price discrepancy means, as I did as much research within the realm of available information on this Amazon vendor's marketing webpage, and I still came up 'empty' re my quest to shed additional light on this very mystifying price-listing. My instincts, as an experienced gold-rated member of Amazon's Vine Voice reviewer program, indicated to me that the only possible purpose in such a large differential in pricing (apart from just an unlikely misprint) was the possibility, as is the case with many Amazon vendors, that this type of product might have been available with numerous buyer options that significantly impacted the purchase price. But, this was definitely not the case, as, after my careful perusal of this seller's aforementioned Amazon marketing webpage, no mention of any form of size, coloration or added/extra features' options were to be found. So, with this most unusual revelation behind us in the formulation of my review, I've got yet another 'oddity declaration' to reveal - - although this one is not price-based, but rather deals with my reason for acquiring this item for review and my intended, 'unusual' use of it. So, for all of you boating enthusiasts eager to read what my findings about this superb, excellent product are all about, I apologize, as my application of this nifty boat-hook gizmo has proven to be far from the obvious, conventional intended purpose of this otherwise well-built boating accessory. My exclusive usage of it in my situation as an actively dedicated homeowner, is for the express purpose of raising and lowering my way-oversized, cordless cellular window shades that adorn my huge, breakfast-nook panoramic windows, with its 45°, "v-mitered" at its central joint 'meeting place' bay windows (that overlook my outside screened patio here in subtropical South Florida). They rise to a majestic height of almost 9 feet and naturally nothing short of using a 'clunky', unwieldy stepladder on each up/down raising occasion was definitely not a viable option for me. So, as they often say, "necessity is often the mother of invention" and with the magical, Godsend-like help of Amazon's enormous 'catalog' of millions of products 'at my side', I was able to acquire this extraordinarily practical boat hook with the expectation of adapting its use to my indoor window shade conundrum...and Man, have I not been disappointed in its performance in solving my dilemma. In so performing its newfound 'duty' as my faithful window-shade-raising enchanting 'wand', I'm not precluded from commenting on the many practical features this 'telescoping magical stick' 'brings to the table'. The most noteworthy attributes I can ascribe to this product (which also would undoubtedly apply to any boating-oriented application as well) are the following items: 1) Perhaps its main advantageous function is that it's 'telescopic' in design, which allows for practical not-in-use storage in many otherwise places incapable of accommodating such a full-sized, fixed-length boat hook item. 2) The 'thumb-tab', spring-like loaded latches are ingeniously designed that enable for the ever-so-easy use of both engaging and retracting the several telescoping sections to its various height capabilities. 3) The non-tapered male threaded end of the pole is made of non-corrosive aluminum (as is the body of the pole) that allows for the easy exchanging of the several added highly desirable and included 'end-use' accessories that accompany this product in its well-packed shipping carton. They're designed and included in the anticipation of the many different applications of the boat hook itself, once again, for me in my peculiar-like application or within the more familiar outdoor, marine utilization surroundings. 4) It comes with two of the aforementioned boat hook tip accessories, which interchange with the threaded pole's end tip. They're composed of a very sturdy, firm plastic like material that reflects the vendor's goal of providing a tip that ostensibly won't scratch nor mar anything it comes in contact with - - in my case with expensive, tempered window sheet glass and in a boater's scenario, with the exotic, expensive hull paint or fragile deck woodwork inherent on many marine vessels today. I am quite impressed with this boat hook as even fully extended it is still quite SOLID! Not exactly sure what the purpose of the glow in the dark tip is. This will be put into heavy use for sure.
