The zipper is high quality material and friendly to kid , she can spend 10 minutes to zip on and zip off . But it is not large enough for ton of color pencils .My daughter pack about 10 to 15 pencils in the bag , then a little bit hard to zip it . Whatever , it is a good , funny and creative pencil bag . I also bought some chunky pencils, glue sticks, etc and hopefully they all added to his excitement. I found that quality of the bag exceeded my original expectation. Zipper seemed very secure, and I believe will hold up fine to a 5 year old boy.
