I've bought 2 of these cooling mattress pads and I'll probably buy more as gifts. I bought the 1st for myself over the summer. I had/have a 3 inch memory foam pad on my bed but I was getting so stinking hot at night that I couldn't sleep. I bought this and what a HUGE difference it has made. No more waking up in sticky puddle of sweat. Last week I bought one for the futon in the guest bedroom. I know I could/should buy a new mattress but the price of a decent mattress is not in the budget for a bed that gets used 2 nights a year. I've had the 2 inch for about a week now. Before you open the box decide where you'll be laying it down to fully de-compress which takes roughly 24hrs. You need to be gentle with it when you take it out of the box and begin to unroll it while it is still in the plastic sheeting. It comes folded in half and then rolled up so it looks small. I gently cut the bottom of the sheeting and it started to expand a little. I slit it open along the edge of one side to let it expand. When I tried to separate the foam (it is folded in half) I found it sticks together. If you're not careful it can rip. I did it a little at a time every 10 minutes or so as it was expanding. Eventually I cut along the other side of the plastic sheeting and unfolded the plastic which made a large sheet of plastic that was protecting it from my living-room floor. You need to let it lay somewhere to fully expand so plan in advance where you will do that...best to have a spare room away from kids or pets. You could put it on top of an old blanket or a drop cloth if you don't want to take the time to open the plastic the way I did though. When I put it on the bed the next day, I was surprised how the 2 inches made it actually harder for me to get into my bed so BEWARE of that if you have thick mattresses or are buying it for an older person. I really can't sit on the edge of the bed anymore like to put on socks without a struggle. I'm 5'3" It seems pretty comfortable compared to having the mattress poking me....but then again, I finally got around to rotating the mattress and that could have helped too. I put this foam pad over my regular mattress pad. I knew there wasn't going to be enough room to put it underneath and I saw some questions about the product where people wondered that. There are no instructions on the subject in the box but there are 3 blank greeting cards in there? One is a thankyou card you write your own message and two Hello you blank cards. They seem very high quality for cards but without envelopes they are pretty useless....and who really sends out those cards anymore? I felt a little guilty throwing them out but I am trying to fight my clutter habits. Although I guess it was a nice gesture, it seems wasteful to include them. Laying on the bed feels nice. I do sink in after a few minutes but it is still comfortable UNTIL I start tossing and turning which I do often. My problem is it somehow makes it a little harder to support myself with my arm to flip myself. I've been having some shoulder pain in the mornings and it could be that or many other things but the truth is every night I start off saying this is really nice and every time I get out of bed I say I don't like it. It is a cheap fix to an uncomfortable mattress. Because it's hard for me to dig my heels in or my arm into the mattress to turn myself, I can only guess that is why some people say their pad ripped. Update: 7/20/24 Finally got around to ordering the "new" version. It's not even memory foam. You push down on it and it literally INSTANTLY pops right back up. I laid on it for about two minutes and the same thing... It has no "memory" because it never conforms in the first place, and HOT is an understatement. I have chronic pain issues, so it's extra important what I sleep on, and there's no way I could sleep on this thing. It's a sad day for me, because these were the only toppers that I used for years. They used to be so good, but once again, someone's gone and ruined a good thing. Lord knows I gave them every chance I could. So now I don't recommend the new version (unless you're looking for a topper that doesn't conform), OR the old version. Regarding the old version, between my own recent experience (see below) and many other people's recent reviews of that version, it appears to me that the stock that they have left has somehow gone bad. Maybe they were left for for too long in a hot warehouse? Idk, because they're clearly still the same toppers that I have loved all these years, but they're damaged/messed up. Old version, last purchased in March 2024: I've been buying these toppers for years. They are quite different from other toppers, in all the best ways. I've always raved about them. I don't even know how to explain their texture, but it's just different from the other memory foam toppers out there. I recently decided to buy another one for our spare bedroom, but unfortunately, when I took it out of the box it had this huge lump/crease in the middle never went away. Also, 2 of the corners and near the edge of one side was permanently flat and hard like a rock. Silly me never opened it to realize all of this until after the return window had closed, so I'm not very happy about that. That being said, I had never had any issues with them in the past, so I decided to order another one, thinking that the bad one I received was probably just a fluke. Well I have now received it, and it was NOT a fluke. It has the exact same huge crease/lump in the middle, and is permanently flat and hard in other areas. Also, when you lay on it, underneath instantly flattens completely down and gets rock hard, and it doesn't retain its original shape for a ridiculously, not at all normal, amount of time. I'm returning it and I'm going to try the new version. When I do I will update this review. I really hope the new one still has the same feel as the old ones (when they're not damaged), because I don't know what I will do if I can no longer get these toppers. ... show more
