Description

From the adrenaline-filled 24 Hours of Le Mans to the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed, Lake Como’s famed Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to the premier Monterey Car Week, the collector car calendar and market has shown one of the most extraordinary growth trajectories of recent years. As thousands flock to specialized meet ups, rallies, auctions, and Concours d’Elegance around the globe, asking prices for the rarest motors have revved higher and higher. So much so, that the value of the 100 cars included in this book exceeds a staggering $1 billion. For the seasoned car collector or the awestruck newcomer, this double-volume is the unrivaled collector car anthology. Curating 100 of the most exquisite, remarkable, and desirable cars of all time to tell a spellbinding story of automotive design-and-engineering endeavor in the tireless pursuit of ever-greater performance both on and off the track, from the first Indy 500-winning 1910 Marmon Wasp to the futuristic 2020 Aston Martin Valkyrie. Laps ahead of any generic catalog, this superlative volume exudes authority and elegance, settling for nothing less than the very best of the best, and presenting each model with the lavish spreads it deserves, complete with stunning imagery taken by the world’s leading car photographers alongside rare archival treasures, from original factory photos to famous motorsports event posters. Each entry is also accompanied by expert descriptive texts and specs, detailing each car’s make, model, year, engine size, horsepower, top speed, transmission, and all- important production numbers. By passionately tapping into their transatlantic expertise and insider knowledge of car auctions, museums, and collections around the world, design authors Charlotte and Peter Fiell survey the autoworld's finest cars of all time. Their carefully curated selection spans the whole history of the automobile, taking in such rare models as a 1912 Stutz Model A Bearcat, as well as lesser-known jewels such as the astonishing 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C SS “Goutte d’Eau” Coupé by Figoni et Falaschi. This definitive compendium includes a foreword from Rob Myers, the founder of RM Sotheby’s, and includes an introduction from the authors that gives a unique perspective on the ins and outs of car collecting at the highest level. The main content is interspersed with interviews with Dr. Frederick Simeone, founder of the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum; The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, founder of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival; Sandra Button, Chairman of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance; John Collins, leading dealer of historic Ferraris; and Shelby Myers, global head of Private Sales at RM Sotheby’s, which offer key personal insights into the car- collecting world. • Great volume set for car enthusiast— luxurious present!
My father-in-law is a rabid car enthusiast— a founding member of a national car museum level of car enthusiast— they are his great hobby. When I saw this set, I hesitated over the price and confirmed with my spouse (his Dad afterall!) that this was a gift which would be appreciated. From the photos my Mom-in-law sent, he spent hours going through the pages. It’s extremely well protected in its own special box, HEAVY and has high production values throughout. Dad-in-law is also a serious amateur photographer and he was impressed by the photos too. A great win all around! Thanks Amazon for alerting me to this set. ... show more

  • Fabulous Books
This 2-book set had a 30 LB sticker on the box when it arrived - to warn you not to hurt your back while lifting... True story. These books are massive, heavy, and printed on extremely nice, thick media. Nice publishing and packaging. The car selection, photography, packaging - all combined this set is worth the price if you're a motorhead. Volume One is 1900-1950's. Volume Two is 1960-present. The most recent is a 2020 McLaren. There is a distinct bias towards high end very low production volume race cars and limited production machinery, however it's tough to say the selections included in the set are not correct. There seems to be more rare (unusual, even obscure?) Italian stuff included than not, a bit of a European bias. There are some '60's and newer Mopar, GM, and Ford. Not much old (prior to 1960) American at all aside from Stutz, Duesenberg, Auburn. There is no glossary to list the cars included, but basically a lot of stuff you'd expect to see in the best museum you've ever been to. Very nice high quality photography. One flaw that's worth mentioning is that there is no "centerfold" - so that very nice 2-page pics have a seam down the center that you just can't overlook. That flaw isn't worth even a half star for me. This set is awesome. ... show more

  • Assouline vs. Taschen
I've had to give up on owning the car of my dreams, so I've put together a pretty good automotive library instead. Two of the "heaviest" tomes are Assouline's "Ultimate collection of cars" and now Taschen's Ultimate collector cars. Which I haven't received yet, but I'm looking forward to. I do hope someone, besides me decides to do a direct comparison, of not just books but of the cars selected. I'm going to give it all 5 stars in the meantime. ... show more

  • Best book of its kind!!!!
I try not to let my enthusiasm flow over onto friends, but in this case I cannot contain myself. Taschen is renowned for its photography and publishing quality, but the have outdone even themselves. Exquisite photography and fascinating hitorical narrative. Limited edition, so get it while you can,

  • Book is great but the presentation box arrived damaged
This seems like a great gift for a car lover but the quality of handling of the presentation box is poor for what this product costs.

  • Damaged! DO NOT BUY - Taschen Customer Service Will Not Help -
I ordered this book set for my husband as a Christmas gift. It was delivered damaged. The shipping box was not damaged, but the book set is damaged. Taschen will not help since this was purchased through Amazon. The set weighs almost 30 lbs. What am I supposed to do with these expensive and heavy damaged books?! ... show more

  • A-W-E-S-O-M-E
I AM NOT IN THE HABIT OF SPENDING OVER $200 ON A BOOK, OR IN THIS CASE, BOOKS, BUT THESE ARE AN EXCEPTION AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, WELL WORTH THE PRICE. For regular folks like myself who in their wildest dreams could not afford any of the vehicles described, the photos are worth the price of entry. I own over 400 books on various aspects of automobile history, and as I get older my interest is definitely tending towards older vehicles, and there is no shortage of these shown and described. Not only that, the chosen vehicles are the "creme-de-la-creme" of each type (at least the ones that have survived the decades). One warning note - these 2 volumes are HEAVY, so beware of back-pain while lifting. In fact I think they are too big/heavy to be described as coffee-table books. Besides which there is no way they can be described by this cliche. Given the exceptional weight of 904 pages of first-rate paper, the books are very well bound and come as a boxed set. Altogether a magnificent history of the automobile. ... show more
