Description

A riveting investigation of the no-holds-barred battle between Amazon and Walmart to become the king of commerce. For years, Walmart and Amazon operated in separate spheres—one a massive brick-and-mortar retailer, the other an online giant. But in 2016, Walmart aggressively moved into the world of e-commerce, while Amazon made big bets in physical retail. The resulting rivalry is a bare-knuckle power struggle as each titan tries to outmaneuver the other to become the biggest omnichannel retailer in the world. As the two megacorporations have consolidated power, troubling consequences have also emerged—for consumers and small merchants faced with fewer buying and selling options, and for millions of workers paid meager wages for demanding and sometimes dangerous work.Winner Sells All is a tale of disruption and big money moves, with legendary executives and fearless entrepreneurs in a battle—between rival corporations and sometimes even within the same company—to invent the future and cement their own legacies. Veteran journalist Jason Del Rey chronicles the defining business clash of this generation—a war waged for our loyalty and our wallets, with hundreds of billions of dollars at stake and millions of jobs on the line. As both companies continue to expand their empires into new industries, Winner Sells All reveals how this battle will change the ways we shop, live, and work—for decades to come. Read more

  • Great read!
Winner Sells All is an incredibly captivating book that dives deep into the intense rivalry between Amazon and Walmart. If you're like me and discovered this topic through the podcast "Land of Giants: Season 1" you'll be thrilled to find that Jason Del Rey's book delivers the same level of entertainment and enlightenment. Del Rey's storytelling skills shine as he takes you on a journey filled with exclusive interviews, insider stories, and mind-boggling facts about these retail behemoths. It doesn't matter if you're not a tech enthusiast or into business books—this read is for everyone curious about how these two companies operate. You'll gain a whole new perspective and understanding of their core values and the impact they have on our lives. Del Rey's writing style is engaging, easy to follow, and leaves you craving more. Winner Sells All is a captivating page-turner that will entertain, educate, and perhaps even make you rethink your shopping habits. It's a must-read for anyone interested in the fascinating world of Amazon and Walmart. I especially enjoyed learning some of the background stories of some of the individuals who shaped these companies. I am a sucker for a good origin story and took home some great nuggets that I plan to always keep in the back of my mind when it comes to business. ... show more

  • MUST READ!
I just discovered this book while listening to Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway interview the author on their podcast, Pivot. The author is Kara's former employee and it's clear he has done his research and knows these two mega companies expertly well. The book is skillfully written and it has been fascinating to read how these two companies began their rivalry to be top dog and gain full access to our wallets. I'm thoroughly enjoying the insider stories that employees and ex-employees have shared that these two companies typically wouldn't want us consumers to know. I even find myself chuckling at some of the little tidbits and anecdotes that these employees have revealed to the author. The magnitude of what these companies are willing to do to control retail is eye opening, impressive and quite scary. I highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • Very enlightening read
Listened to the author’s podcast on the topic of Amazon and the book is a great follow up to how it all comes together behind the scenes of such competing giants.

  • Incredible and insightful read
The biggest rivalries in the world include some of the most recognizable names/brands. But one of the most well-known and largest ones is depicted in this book. It's a compelling read, well researched, full of facts opposed to theories and will have you understanding how you are involved in this battle along with this history that many of us aren't even aware of. It is easy to read, comprehend and absolutely fascinating. In less than a week since I received it, I am already done and intrigued for more and to see what the future holds. Jason Del Ray is a compelling author and hands down hit it on the nail with this one. Looking forward to hearing about another one that will hit the shelves! ... show more

  • Should’ve Been Shorter
If you like retail, want more insights & to walk away feeling you gained something then this isn’t the one. It should’ve been a 100 page book. My advice? Skip this & buy The Everything Store. Almost 50% of the reference section is from that book anyway. Definitely not a recommend for me.

  • Great read.
This books points out just how little we realize that we're being maneuvered and manipulated into the purchases that we make. There's a war going on behind the scenes and it's for control of your purchasing power. It's through this control and the billions of dollars at stake that companies become these profit driven beasts that have more concern with money and the power it brings than the impact it has on humanity. This book drives home the point that big retail does not have our best interest at heart. ... show more

  • Exceptionally well-written!
A true deep dive into the longstanding rivalry between two superpowers that influence our spending habits, our thinking, and our overall consumerism in ways unimaginable and incalculable. This isn't a sexy topic, per se, and Jason knows this so to keep our attention, he spins a narrative that is doused in facts, quotes, and anecdotes from the inside players. This book is steeped in veracity and legitimacy. He is, himself, an insider, after all, so his access to this Hatfield and McCoy saga is truly unprecedented. It makes for great reading - is funny, tongue-in-cheek, and committed to truth telling from start to finish. What makes it truly great is the quality of the writing (I'm a writer myself and don't hand out that compliment willy nilly) and the commitment to open-endedness. For a work of such breadth, Jason methodically builds in a good amount of breathing room implicitly inviting his readers to ask questions of the book - and ultimately, of themselves. ... show more
