Description

Walking his dog at dusk, one boy catches glimpses of the lives around him in this lovely ode to autumn evenings, exploring your neighborhood, and coming home. Before your city goes to sleep, you might head out for a walk, your dog at your side as you go out the door and into the almost-night. Anything can happen on such a walk: you might pass a cat, or a friend, or even an early raccoon. And as you go down your street and around the corner, the windows around you light up one by one until you are walking through a maze of paper lanterns, each one granting you a brief, glowing snapshot of your neighbors as families come together and folks settle in for the night. With a setting that feels both specific and universal and a story full of homages to The Snowy Day, Julia Denos and E. B. Goodale have created a singular book — at once about the idea of home and the magic of curiosity, but also about how a sense of safety and belonging is something to which every child is entitled. • A show-stopping, must-have for every book shelf
Set in urban Somerville, Mass (a neighborhood in Boston) this is a book with so much gorgeous nuance it's tough to know where to begin. There are so many things happening in all of the windows it's a veritable goldmine for curious kids (and adults!) who like to discover something new upon repeated readings. A little boy tastes a bit of independence walking his dog around the neighborhood - a diverse mix of homes, apts., shops and parks. The sun sets gorgeously, progressing with each page turn, and the economy of text is thoughtful and warm. And don't miss the case cover (under the jacket), just a gorgeous wash of sunsetting color. ... show more

  • What a beautiful book depicting urban life
My 3 yo son loves this book. It highlights intriguing concepts for little ones - windows, doors, light and dark. Lots to look at. He says, "lots of different things going on in all the apartments!" Quickly became one of his faves for sure. The illustrations are beautiful.

  • Beautiful illustrations, sweet, simple storyline.
One of the most gorgeous picture books I’ve seen in a long time. The story is sweet, simple, easy enough for my two-year-old to follow and enjoy, but lyrical enough for an adult to enjoy reading as well

  • Absolutely beautiful
A pithy, poetic, and moving depiction of urban life through a child's eyes. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and captivate my kids' attention with engaging details and recognizable streetscapes. Rich and wonderful.

  • Great content, paper too thin and hard
I absolutely LOVE the illustrations and the whole content of the book and my little one also seems to take interest in it. However, the paper is rather hard and thin that I could never leave the book with my baby alone to avoid a paper cut. It would be great to see the book in a more kiddo-friendly option such as a board book. ... show more

  • Transports you
This is a lovely book. One of my favorite things is peeking into businesses and homes right when it starts to get dark. You can see how they decorate and its a little window into their lives. This book celebrates that wonderful time of day in the city, as people return home from work and attend classes or cook dinner. The dog was a particular hit with my girls. They liked to see what he was doing on each page. The end made me cry...so that says something about the way it tells you a story. ... show more

  • Lovely book
I love the art and the story, as does my two year old. Probably an especially good choice for families that live in towns or small cities that are a blend of suburban and urban features

  • Reminds me of Pittsburgh
I just love this book. Reminds me of Pittsburgh, the quieter American city where you walk by older houses and brick buildings and wonder what people might be doing inside. Lights and windows open to so many possibilities. Not a book for those who lack a romantic imagination.
