  • This book is a must!
I’ve been struggling with my 8 year old girl not sleeping through the night for several months. During the second visit to her pediatrician they suggested this book. It’s a great GREAT book that helps parents and kids work together and help work on ways to establish better sleep habits. 12/10 recommend! ... show more

  • Great for 10 year old
Before buying this book, we checked it out through our interlibrary loan to see if this was something worth getting. My oldest has a variety of anxieties and fears that have made sleeping on her own and through the night a challenge. Our temporary solution was to sleep with her or nearby but we and she knew this wasn't a good solution. She wants so badly to be able to fall asleep on her own and stay asleep. This book has some fantastic tools and strategies. Additionally, it starts each chapter with an easy to understand concept and teaches a fun and easy magic trick. It was helpful for her to read how much sleep she should have and use the worksheet provided to determine when she should be in bed in order to be rested for the next day. The section on how to turn your fears into something funny has been helpful. She was very reluctant to try that as she didn't want to talk about those fears outloud, but now that she has, it has taken some of the power away. We are still working on it, but she is making progress and feels that it is possible. She will request this book and ask to try strategies without our prompting. I would highly recommend this book. I also work with students during the school year and I will recommend this book to parents who may be struggling with the same things. ... show more

  • It helped my daughter. Highly recommended.
An older friend of my 7 yo told her a horrible, terrifying story at school that traumatized her. It involved her getting killed in the middle of the night (this was around Halloween, and I can't comprehend why a child would do something like this to another child, but that's another issue that we had to address with the school). My daughter couldn't sleep after that, and could only be comforted if she stayed in our bed. I felt so helpless. The fear in my child's eyes before bedtime and in the middle of the night when she was waking up was breaking my heart, and I didn't know how to help her. We bought this book, and I started reading it with her every day. We tried the magic tricks (some of them are a little too advanced for an impatient 7 yo), but mostly, we tried the exercises in the book. Just the act of reading the book with my daughter was therapeutic. She felt that she wasn't alone with her fear. It normalized it. The book kept on reminding her that many kids have the same troubles with sleeping, that kids have scary dreams, and that there are ways to deal with it. It made her feel that we were proactively fixing the issue. The book helped us talk about how she felt. The dreambox idea is excellent. The tricks, exercises and games really work. Once we started working with this book, my daughter started sleeping much better. She is still waking up once or twice at night, but she is able to stay alone in her bed, and fall asleep there. It's a huge progress. I highly recommend this book, and I recommend that you follow the instructions in the book. Don't speed things up. Read it one chapter at a time. It's a wonderful tool in helping children deal with nighttime anxiety. I'm very happy I came upon it. ... show more

  • Nice book
The theories and ideas in this book seem sound. I didn’t realize (my fault I am sure), that the book is written for children. My son wasn’t very interested in reading it, but I read parts to him and we did some of that exercises together which I believe will help.

  • Fantastic!
I got this for my 10 yr old daughter who does not often go to sleep easily for fear of having a bad dream. We started reading it in bed with the intent of just reading a section or two. But every time I said that's enough for tonight, she asked if we could please keep reading. This book hooked her (and me) immediately with both the content (including a magic trick which I let her do; and activities & games, which we read thru but will do during the day tomorrow. And a the way it is written - appropriate for younger children but not babyish or cutesy, so - good for tweens also. It not only helps to record and track new/ improving sleep patterns, but also what to do about the fears, thoughts, & dreams that keep her from sleeping and/or sleeping well. She fell asleep just before the end, knowing we'll read it again & do the activities tomorrow. Seems like working thru this book could greatly improve her sleep and diminish the fear of her dreams. Will send an update in a few weeks - but so far we're off to a good start! ... show more
