Description

In a space of just 10” x 39” x 19-1/2”, H.O. Studley managed to arrange – with perfection – more than 250 of his tools into a dovetailed mahogany cabinet that has captivated tens of thousands of woodworkers since it was first unveiled in 1988 on the back cover of Fine Woodworking with a single shocking photograph. After a brief stay at the Smithsonian, the cabinet was sold to a private collector and hasn’t been seen by the public for well over a decade. Studley’s workbench has never been on public view. For the last four years, Donald Williams and a team of supporting characters has been researching, documenting and photographing both the cabinet and Studley’s equally amazing workbench to create “Virtuoso: The Tool Cabinet and Workbench of Henry O. Studley.” This book is the first in-depth examination of one of the most beautiful woodworking tool chests ever constructed and presents the first-ever biography of Studley (1838-1925), a piano and organ builder in Quincy, Mass. In this book, Williams uses original research to answer the questions that flash through the minds of everyone who views the cabinet: How did he build it? How does it work? And why would anyone construct such a monument to his tools? In this book you will find measurements, details and photographs of all the tools in the cabinet. Every swinging frame, hinged panel and nook of this three-dimensional, multi-layered sculpture has been analyzed so you can understand how it folds in on itself like a giant piece of mahogany origami. You will meet the man himself, H.O. Studley, and get a glimpse into the trade of high-end organ and piano makers in 19th- and 20th-century New England. But most of all, you will see the cabinet in a way that only a handful of privileged people ever have. And you will realize that the magazine photograph that electrified the woodworking world in 1988 only scratches the surface of the cabinet’s complete magnificence. Read more Read less

  • A great study of a great cabinet
I have a graduate degree in English, but the occasional misspelling does not bother me in this book. The story and the photography are what matter, and they are very well done. I purchased my copy from Lost Art Press when first available. I believe they still have some stock, so buy it from them. A fine effort from an ignorant bunch of woodworkers. ... show more

  • Excellent research, writing and typography marred by production problems and price gouging
This book is currently available from the publisher, and from Lee Valley (a specialty woodworking tools supplier with impeccable customer service and even better corporate values) at list price, so there's no justification for the inflated prices. Beautifully photographed and well-written, the book is unfortunately rife with spelling errors, and poor typographic choices which detract from one’s perception of the text (Studley’s first name is mis-spelled on the inside front flap of the dust jacket), and most egregiously where there should be a photograph of the iconic pairs of needle-nosed jewelry pliers, is instead, a mistakenly repeated photo of a pair of flat pliers from another page, and when this was pointed out, the publisher was unwilling to do a “cancel” and reprint and replace the page. ... show more

  • Awesome book!
This is a great book on one of the finest tool chests ever made. The author and photographer did a great job. This book is from a small but well respected publisher so I bought direct from them to help support their work. On Amazon you have to watch who the seller is - but remember that the feed back review is for the item not the seller. It seems unfair to leave one star on a great item because of the odd seller. ... show more

  • Buy directly from publisher for best price
Horrific price gouging. Husband put this on his Xmas gift list with note to buy directly from publisher - which I did.

  • Not the publisher's price!
I don't know what scam artist is selling this item, but it sure isn't the publisher, Lost Art Press. Go to their Web site, you will be pleasantly surprised by the actual price.

  • Love to read it
Love to read it, but I'm not going to spend $125 for the privilege. I'm sure it's very nice book, try thinking in the 21st century model of digital books at say $10.

  • A beautiful and passionately written book
A worthy testimony to a craftsman's legacy. This book documents the care, detail and history that went into this iconic tool box from a period of our history when hand craft work was cultivated and valued for its real worth. The pianos that these tools crafted are now finding their way into our garbage dumps, but at least these tool and their story will live on. ... show more
