What can one say of a round steel ball? I'm not a metallurgist so I would not know how to test for hardness. I can say that the count is right and they arrived on time.

This set of 900 SAE bearings, very tiny to large, seems to be manufactured to a high-quality standard. The bearings appear to be uniformly spherical without any seam or flaws. They are steel with a chrome coating. Note that they are not stainless steel, so they are good for greased bearing applications but not suitable in applications that subject them to potentially corrosive fluids, or water. I see no problem with the balls. Whether the current $16 after coupon for the assortment is a fair price I leave for the shopper to decide. I am, however, not pleased with the case. While each size of bearings is individually bagged to prevent a spill, the bags are super cheap and prone to develop holes. This means it is likely the set will become a hot mess of balls unless you are super careful. Dropping round metal balls on the floor is even worse than dropping screws because balls are meant to roll like crazy. The case is undersized so the lid won't even close properly after I inspected the balls. Best might be to keep the 2 largest sizes elsewhere so the remaining balls fit in this case and the lid can close completely. Even then I don't trust this case to contain the tiny balls. I intend to replace all the plastic baggies with much higher quality baggies, along with a slip of paper in each bag denoting the size. I simply don't trust the provided bags and case. I'll put all the baggies I create in some other case and then repurpose this case. Seems to be a great set but I wish they'd have given more consideration to effective storage containment. With the undersized case and absurdly cheap baggies it's literally an accident waiting to happen. ... show more

These are nice chrome steel bearings in the 8 sizes listed. I got the exact amount they said (yes I actually counted them) and saw no scratches or blemishes on any of them. They are packed with each size in a plastic bag (typical cheap stretchy plastic bags you can't open easily) that my scissors opened. I put them in separate containers. The supplied box is a typical cheap plastic box with10 compartments separated by removable dividers. In order to get the balls all in the box, you have to mix sizes of the bearings in some of the bays so I just moved them all to the plastic containers. I took the picture before I had them all stored so you can see the construction of the box as well. I make fishing lures for fun and wanted to make some that rattle. I make them for inshore and for off shore saltwater fishing so I wanted a variety of sizes. I have some lead shot pellets I tried, but they don't make much of the clicking noise I wanted. These do and they add a little weight. They aren't stainless, but I seal the tubing so it won't matter. This set also is something I've wanted to try for a couple of mixed media art projects, a magnetic sculpture, and a hard sculpture, but those will have to wait for when I have more time. I like using things outside of their specified purpose to see what I can come up with. This will help keep me busy on rainy days. Having so many bearings in so many different sizes is a really good deal. If you fix bikes and need some loose bearings, these are good quality, but don't be afraid to think outside the box as well. ... show more

The ball bearings themselves seem to be good quality, but the container isn't set up to hold them all properly. I ended up having to mix a few of the sizes, but since I just need them for my dye bottles its ok if I don't have the exact sizes correct. If you need to know the exact sizes and for them to be stored separately, then you may want to find an alternative storage solution from the one provided. ... show more

    • Nice size range. Sizes bagged individually. Not stainless steel.
I've been pulling apart pump heads from my empty lotion and soap bottles in order to save the stainless steel springs and check balls. They are true stainless steel and are not attracted to a magnet in the least. This is a more comprehensive set to keep on hand in the event a check-ball or detent-ball has popped out under spring pressure and I can't find it. The box is nicely labelled and the ball bearings are individually bagged to keep them orderly. But these are not stainless steel. They are plain bearing steel and are very strongly attracted to a magnet. So these are no good for check balls or detents that are exposed to water or corrosive liquids. They are definitely fine for greased or oiled bearing applications. ... show more
