  • Nice glass
Style: 8x42
Nice glass for the money. Longer than what I like. I prefer my 8x32 compacts same brand with ED glass. Not a whole lot of difference with the Hoya glass. I had to see what it was all about. Meh. Don't regret my purchase though. I own several brands of glass kind of a bino junkie. I feel you get alot for your money on this brand. ... show more

  • So close to being great....
Style: 8x42
I use these for nature viewing, mostly during daylight hours. I have purchased two sets of these. The first set I bought 6 years ago, (paid $100 more than what they are now) and it was spectacular. I took them on a safari and just loved them. They produced a nice 3D zone, they were super sharp and high contrast in the center, and not bad at the edges. I think I might have gotten lucky with that set. I ended up gifting them to another person that didn't have a decent set of binos. So I bought another set of these. The second set, just recently purchased, wasn't quite as good. There are small differences in optical quality between the left and right eyes, so the 3D zone is diminished as compared with my first set (maybe half the depth, and half the field diameter). I'm also left constantly feeling like a minor diopter adjustment is needed but that's not the case. So I think Vanguard isn't able to maintain good quality control at this price point. But frankly, at this price, the optics and the whole package are really hard to beat. I'd give these 5 stars for anyone who definitely can't spend over $300. A little note about 3D zones - I feel like most binoculars under $500 really don't have one (but these do, albeit a small one). To me, a 3D zone is a region in which the focus is so good, there is depth to what your eyes can adapt to within the field of view (this is smaller than the overall field of view, even on super high end binos!), so your brain makes that connection and the image pops into a true immersive 3D scene - which is wonderful. If the image isn't sharp enough, your eyes can't really discern differences in focus for small changes in depth of field, so the only 3D information is by superposition, which is not nearly as enjoyable. Anyway, these binoculars have some great attributes, including a small 3D zone, and are oh so close to being truly great. But the quality control isn't quite there, and I think it's probably unlikely to happen on a set of binoculars at this price. So, in summary, really great binoculars for the price. Worth considering even if your budget is upwards of ~$600. ... show more

  • Sparkling clarity in a solid unit
Style: 8x42
These binos are an inspiration. Every time I look through these I am amazed by the sparkling clarity and brightness. I haven't owned high end binoculars, but have used older medium and low grade ones. I've also had a lifetime with camera optics, so know what I'm seeing. These are a revelation. Reality looks better through these! Ha ha. I was showing them to a friend and mentioned the price range and what some fancier pieces cost, and his comment was "what could they have that these don't?" In researching I learned a great deal from some reviewing websites, especially a site based in England, and finally honed in on these. It was still an investment, and every time I use them I'm glad I made the purchase. They are incredibly solid feeling, and if there is a weakness it would be their weight. They are in the middle of the field in terms of weight and I do use them in hiking, but for long range journeys I use a smaller pair. These are nicely suited for auto trips and landscape observation near my home. The company seems to have some other good products that I'll check out in the future, especially the line of day packs. These binos are made in China, and the company is in America. There seems to be few quality optics that aren't made in China, Germany, Japan or maybe a couple other countries. I had to consider the price in my decision. I handle these and see that I got the A grade quality for a reasonable price. ... show more

  • Chromatic Aberration Problem
Style: 8x42
I did a fair amount of research and read reviews before I decided on the Vanguard Endeavor ED II. The build quality is very nice and these just feel like a quality product. Very comfortable to use and adjust. The problem is they add a yellowish or greenish quality to the edge of an image. Birds that I know have no yellow color sometimes appear with slightly yellow highlights. Viewing a white lamp post in the bright sunlight appears to have a greenish highlights near the edges. I have several pairs of binoculars and could make comparisons and it stands out with the Vanguards. Disappointed and these will go back. I suspect I got a defective pair but now I'm afraid to try another Vanguard. ... show more

  • Despite it's weight a very high quality binocular
Style: 8x42
Very nice binoculars but my focus knob was quite stiff. I was hoping it would loosen over time but I decided to return mine. In general, it's a very nice binocular and most owners will be quite happy. It is a tad on the heavy side so if weight is an issue you may want the 8x32 model. I owned the 8x32 model for several months and was quite happy with it. The 8x42 does offer a touch more light gathering ability and thus seemed brighter at times. ... show more

  • Deeply disappointed!
Style: 8x42
Bought based on many good reviews online. My sample arrived with spotting on the ocular and objective lenses, one eye cup that would not extend, a chemical odor, and the general feeling of an inferior product. I tested several binoculars from $230.00 to $680.00--these were $399.00--and felt that these were by far the worst of the lot in most categories. Perhaps I received a defective sample, but I'd be hesitant to try again, especially when the Athlon Midas binoculars (at $230.00) easily exceed these in most every way I can imagine. ... show more

  • Clear bright images
Style: 8x42
For birding, clear images, plenty of light, easy to focus, color accurate. They are heavy but better with a harness rather than neck strap. Maybe because of the weight, they can be difficult to hold steady but overall I am very happy with them for birding.

  • Great bino’s for the money
Style: 8x42
Excellent close in and long range birding optics for birding. Have several pairs of bino’s and these are hands down the best for clarity, color in all kinds of light; and ease of focus. Would buy again.
