  • This is the best sub-$100 class-D amp I've tested
If you're looking for a desktop amp, you're likely in awe of the glut of cheap Chinese chip amps. I did a lot of research and purchased several of them, as well as a dedicated high-quality bluetooth receiver to compare audio quality against. Remember that you're looking at very low-cost desktop chip amps powering 8Ω speakers -- this isn't going to be in the same ballpark of quality of traditional analog amps. If your expectations are adjusted, you'll love this little guy. 1. Connectivity Bluetooth: It's hard to find a bluetooth amp under 100 bucks with aptX HD. This is a big selling point. Qualcomm's aptX HD codec gets you a high-enough bitrate that using bluetooth instead of a wired connection can actually get you decent results. When it is stable, the sound quality is quite good without noticeable latency or syncing issues when paired with videos. I did notice with this receiver that the bluetooth connection seemed to suffer from some occasional crackles. I'm wondering if there's interference coming into play. I'm close to docking a star for the interference, but I have to determine if it's something in my setup first. I'll try to update when I have a better sense of the issue. UPDATE: I purchased a second unit and this one is not having the same problem with bluetooth signal drops. I'm happy to report that it's working perfectly. Aux in (3.5mm jack): sounded great plugged into my turntable (with pre-amp). No hiss or notable issues to speak of. Noe that when bluetooth connects, it takes precedence over line-in. There's no switch to choose inputs. RCA/Optical/Coax: I didn't realize this when purchasing the unit, but these connections are all *outputs*, not inputs. The only inputs to the amp are bluetooth and 3.5mm. I haven't tested the output ports. 2. Audio quality As an amplifier it does the job well. I'm not sure what chips they're using, but there's no noticeable clipping or distortion at 50-70% volume and it's plenty loud. The sound is warm and clean, not overly processed-sounding. I didn't notice any issues with hissing until I got up to 90%+ volume; at lower volumes, I couldn't detect anything. I'm pretty sure the amp can deliver the 50Wx2 on the box. 3. Controls The plastic bass and treble knobs provide some ability to dial in the sound, though their effects are not as prominent as I've heard in some other amps. There's an impossible-to-see small circle on each dial to indicate where it is set. I would've liked to see painted lines. That said, all three knobs have a nice click of resistance when you get to the 50% setting, which helps you orient yourself without even looking at them. I noticed a slight lag to the effect of moving the knobs, which I later realized is due to the fact that the controls seem to make changes in "steps" rather than a linearly. - Overall, I'm quite happy with the quality of this unit, especially considering its cost. You're just not going to get better sound from your bluetooth devices to your speakers for under $100. ... show more

  • Gave This Little Amp a 2nd Try
Color: Black
I had originally purchased this little amp for its Bluetooth connectivity. However, it just didn't work out for me the way I had hoped. Just a little to lightweight, it struggled to work well in the room I placed it in. So I packed it up in its box and put it away in the closet for a rainy day. In the interim I decided I needed a small music system for my bedroom. Having recently finished ripping several thousand CD tracks to a home built NAS, I wanted something to play them in my room. Pulling the 1Mii from its place in the closet and connecting an old Tablet to it as a source, I tried again. In this role it has enough power for the volume I need. A little thin in the mids, it still provides a crisp non-muddy performance with the tracks that I feed it. A little lacking in power (what can you expect for 70 bucks?) It still satisfies. ... show more

  • Power output overstated
Color: Black
No way this amp even comes close to the stated power output rating with included power supply, but does ok, especially for the size. Running a pair of vintage Polk Audio Monitor 4 bookshelf speakers and they can take all this amp can give. Subwoofer output signal is very low. Barely enough signal to push the sub to half it’s capability. Weird interference sounds coming from bluetooth when phone is connected. Not noticeable when music is playing, but very noticeable between songs. I wish the bluetooth connection had a pin like the old school bluetooth connections had. Down side to the long range bluetooth is that your neighbors can connect just to be annoying. ... show more

  • Thoughtless design
This amp had potential, but has too many poor design choices to really be great. For example, when using line in mode, you can control the volume by attenuating the input signal (changing the volume on the source device). However, when in bluetooth, the source level is kept fixed, so the only way to adjust the volume is to physically walk up to the unit and turn the knob. And there's no remote, despite how cheap this would be today. Worse, when in bluetooth mode, the volume knob doesn't have the full range. Below a certain point, the volume cuts off completely, despite the fact that it's still fairly loud and I'd like it to be quieter. Can't adjust it on the source, that level is fixed until a certain point, at which point it, too, drops out all at once. If I could only adjust the source level for bluetooth, I could set the volume knob somewhere appropriate for the situation, and fine tune with the source volume control (i.e. my phone). Instead, I don't have the range of control I'd want _at all_. Also, this device is super eager to pair in bluetooth, regardless of what mode it's in. It can be in line-in mode, happily playing away, and then I come home and my phone automatically pairs, and starts steaming all the phone's audio to speakers which I didn't want to use and which aren't even switched to that source! The only way to "correct" this is to turn off bluetooth on my phone, or manually unpair (which requires re-pairing next time I want to use it). Finally, when it is in bluetooth mode and playing sound, I have found literally NO way to switch back to line-in mode other than physically power-cycling the device. This isn't hugely inconvenient since there's no remote anyway, but it's a highly unintuitive UI design. Audio quality gets no comment as the UI design is far too frustrating. ... show more
