This special edition of the Staff of the Wizard Gandalf features an illuminated crown that glows just like the one wielded by Sir Ian McKellen in the motion picture The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Cradled by the crown’s spindly, twisting faux-wood skeleton, a high intensity LED gleams brilliantly from behind a striking translucent lattice. Broken by the asymmetrical framework of the lattice, the vivid white light scatters into beaming, multidirectional rays - glinting and sparkling as the staff is turned. The light reciprocates by bathing the crystalline lattice in a warm golden glow. Activated by a hidden button, the 100-lumen LED boasts a 50,000-hour lifespan and shines for an impressive 20 hours on just a pair of AA batteries (not included).

This staff is extremely solid. The resin it is made out of is extremely durable, and the steel reinforcement makes me confident it will never break. It is quite heavy though, far more so than if it had been simply made of wood, but I imagine mass producing this particular staff from wood would be impractical given all the random detail. I am a fairly strong guy, so weilding it is less difficult for me than for many of the children I imagine this would be gifted to, but that is one thing to keep on mind. But ultimately this is a piece for your wall, and for that, it is 10 out of 10, the light is bright enough, though I get nervous loading batteries into the piece that pulls put of the bottom which seems slightly fragile, and if that were to break and never light up again, it would lose some of its cool factor ... show more

    • Very cool & well made, but light is almost indistinguishable
I love the staff. It's very well made and looks fantastic. The weight is ideal and feels legit. My only complaint is that the light is so faint and dim that even in the dark you can't really see it. For the price, that was a pretty big disappointment as I expected more.

If you’re just thinking of buying it for the looks… get it. If you are wanting this for a costume piece, let me just say… it weighs a ton. I bout it for a costume and carried it around for about 8 hours, and honestly, i may build a whole new staff, just because it was exhausting carrying this thing.
