  • Excellent Value; Quality Performances; Nice Introductory Survey
Another great low-cost box set, this one surveying major piano concertos (as well as one solo piano work - the Mendelssohn Rondo Capriccioso) from 8 different composers, with good quality performances from major artists. Calling it the "Ultimate" set, and "Essential Masterpieces" - those terms are really marketing hyperbole (although the selections do comprise ones that a basic classical collection will likely include, so the "essential" part is probably ok). Regardless of how they chose to describe these 5 CD's, it is a very good way to either introduce an interested beginner to classical music, at a very modest cost, or to supplement your own collection if you have a desire for some of these particular performances. Most collectors will already have versions of all of these works, but may not have these particular performances. This is one of a number of similar sets issued by Decca, all "Ultimate" 5 CD collections. In my case I purchased this set to join the recordings that I already own, because I enjoy these compositions and I was interested in listening to the artists on these discs, several of whom I did not previously have in my collection. Also, occasionally one of these compilation sets, in addition to including mostly standard and familiar repertoire, will include something that you might not have heard previously. This happened to me here - the Schumann Piano Concerto on disc 2 was one that I had not heard before obtaining this set. When I realized that and sat down and listened to it, I found it delightful, and I can practically say that for this performance alone, this box set was a worthwhile purchase for me. Packaging is basic - the CD's are contained in five individual traditional plastic jewel cases, which fit into a lightweight thin cardboard slipcase. There are no liner notes; the paper insert in each CD lists only the composition, movements and timing, and the performers. No notes regarding performance dates or other comments regarding the performances, and nothing about the compositions themselves or the composers. This is just a very minimal package that delivers the CD's to you and does give them good protection. The notes below concerning the dates and venue of the performances were obtained on the Decca website. I am just now listening to the performances and comparing them to others I have in my collection. The quality of the sound on all discs is good, even the Beethoven performances from 1954. The artists and performances are not the ones that you will find listed as the #1 or #2 choices for any of these works but to my ear they are still quite good. Not being a musician myself or expert on these works I cannot speak to how the performers have chosen to handle specific challenges within the works. I feel that the benefit of having different performances of favorite works is that from repeated listening to different artists you will learn the works as well as appreciate the merits of the better performers once your familiarity reaches a certain point. That ability is something I am still developing and will continue to refine for as long as I am able to enjoy listening to good music. Detailed contents for the 5 CD's: CD 1: --- Tracks 1-3: Tchaikovsky; Piano Concerto No.1 in B flat minor, Op.23; Victoria Postnikova, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky; October 1982, Vienna, Austria --- Tracks 4-6: Rachmaninov; Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, Op.18; Cristina Ortiz, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Moshe Atzmon; September 1984, Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London CD 2: --- Tracks 1-3: Grieg; Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.16; Jorge Bolet, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Riccardo Chailly; May 1985, Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin. Performance notes - taken at a more leisurely pace and with less intensity by Bolet than others I have heard and become used to, reduces the drama, particularly in the very beginning --- Track 4: Mendelssohn; Rondo capriccioso, Op.14; Jorge Bolet; December 1985, St. Barnabas, North Finchley, UK --- Tracks 5-7: Schumann; Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.54; Jorge Bolet, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Riccardo Chailly; May 1985, Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin CD 3: --- Tracks 1-3: Beethoven; Piano Concerto No. 4 in G, Op. 58; Clifford Curzon, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Hans Knappertsbusch; April 1954, Grosser Saal, Vienna --- Tracks 4-6: Beethoven; Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major; Clifford Curzon, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Hans Knappertsbusch; June 1957, Grosser Saal, Vienna CD 4: --- Tracks 1-3: Mozart; Piano Concerto No. 21 in C, K.467; Stephen Kovacevich, London Symphony Orchestra, Colin Davis; June 1972, Watford Town Hall, Watford --- Tracks 4-6: Mozart; Piano Concerto No. 25 in C, K.503; Stephen Kovacevich, London Symphony Orchestra, Colin Davis; June 1972, Watford Town Hall, Watford CD 5: --- Tracks 1-3: Chopin; Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11; Claudio Arrau, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Eliahu Inbal; October 1970, Wembley Town Hall, London. --- Tracks 4-6: Chopin; Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21; Claudio Arrau, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Eliahu Inbal; October 1970, Wembley Town Hall, London. ... show more

  • Keeps on amazing me
These 5 disc sets from Decca keep on amazing me ! I have now purchased several of them and they have all been beautiful and we'll worth the money. I won't comment much on the music simply because there are better at doing so. What I will say is that is that I scour Amazon almost daily looking for great deals on music. Mostly used cd's in very good condition and gently used. I have to find the best deals and almost make a personal game of doing so. Like I mentioned above I have purchased several of these 5 disc Decca sets and have not batted an eye at buying brand new because I know I will be more than pleased. Most of them are around $15 for 5 discs. At $3 a cd you really can't go wrong. ... show more

  • Like any other set of CD's
Like any other set of CD's, some selections are not to my liking. However, there are a number excellent pieces in the set which compensate for that.

I love the nocturnes, ballads, impromtus, and concertos. One regret is that scherzos and mazurcas are not there.
