  • From Doo-Wop To Disco, the Mighty Dells.
Many of the R&B groups that got big in the late 60's and early 70's got their start doing doo-wop in the late 50's but none of them had the longevity of the Dells. They formed in 1952, before the rock era had even started, and had their first big hit with Oh, What a Night in 1956 on Chicago's Vee Jay label. When the Dells had hits with Stay In My Corner (1968) and an updated version of Oh, What a Night (1969), they weren't being influenced by the Old School sound, they had actually been the Old School sound. It's no surprise they won the R&B PIoneer Award. Few groups have ever had this kind of longevity and they did it with just one change in personnel all the way until they finally retired due to failing health in 2009. That's unheard of in a business where it's standard that groups in all genres go through many personnel changes over the years. But except when Johnny Funches (high tenor) left to take care of his family in 1960 and was replaced by Johnny Carter (formerly of the Flamingos), the Dells were always Marvin Junior (leader with the gruff voice), Chuck Barksdale (deep voice), Mickey McGill (harmony) and Verne Allison (harmony). They came from Harvey, Illinois, southeast of Chicago and began like many groups singing in high school. Oh, What a Night gave them a career. Like most groups the actual money was to be made by almost constantly touring, since record label accounting usually left artists making nothing. This led to another situation too common in the industry which happened to quite a fewgroups: a serious car crash. This one, in November of 1958 left Mickey McGill in the hospital in Ohio for six months. But the group got it all abck together and toured with Dinah Washington. This time they signed with Checker Records in 1961, part of Chicago's Chess Records and later were placed on Cadet, another Chess label. There they stayed for all of their hit period, working with producers like Bobby Miller, Charles Stepney (later arranger for Earth, Wind and Fire) and Quincy Jones who taught them jazz phrasing so they could do more than doo-wop. Their sound was based on the rough, gruff voice of Marvin Junior who younger fans would say had a Teddy Pendergrass voice except Marvin had it first; the phrasing, too with Marvin using his voice as a dramatic instrument. Each singer was great but I imagine Harold Melvin, who almost went back as far as the Dells, decided to use Teddy in a Marvin Junior-like way once he heard Teddy's naturally gruff voice. Marvin's voice was often contrasted with johnny Carter's smooth, high tenor in arrangements. Deep voiced Chuck Barksdale carried on the 50's tradition of spoken parts in songs with perfect elocution. The big break came in early 1968 with There Is, with its big Motown beat and produced pop Top 10's with Stay in my Corner and the 1969 version of Oh, What a Night. They also did a wonderfully dramatic reading of Paul Mauriat's Love Is Blue blended with I Can Sing a Rainbow that was a hit in spring, 1969. Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation was an R&B Top 5 in 1973. Like most R&B vocal groups they had many R&B chart Top 10's in addition to the pop crossovers and had hits there through 1975.The songs on this CD cover all of their Cadet years as well as some of the songs on other labels after Chess folded in 1974. This covers the doo-wop style of their big hits all the way to the very disco Our Love, the funk stylings of Super Woman and the Earth, Wind and Fire-influenced I Touched a Dream. A bonus is their 1991 recording of A Heart Is a House for Love from Robert Townsend's 1991 movie, The Five Heartbeats, one of the best films about R&B groups ever. Though the story was a composite of many groups, especially the Temptations, the Dells were also mentioned by Townsend as a significant part of his inspiration. This disc is put out by Universal, wgho owns all the Cadet masters, so it sounds great. ... show more

  • Pure Soul! Pure Gold!
I have been an avid soul music fan all my life. I have just about all the soul greats in my CD collection and consider myself somewhat of an "Soul-Musicologist". However, as deeply steeped in the genre as I am, I have to say that none of the soul legends of days gone by with the exception of the legendary Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson can move me like the Dells. Up until the release of the the 5 Heartbeats movie, I'd always thought of the Temptations as the ultimate group in classic R&B. Then I saw the film and I was blown away by both the movie and the soundtrack. This was my introduction to the Dells. I bought the soundtrack and for years that was all I had of this amazing group until finally, I purchased this CD and I am so glad that I did. This is one of the best CD's I own - bar none! I get chills everytime the mighty Marvin Junior's stratospheric baritone roars into a song over Johnny Carters soft tenor...it get's me each and everytime. There are so many great songs on this compilation but to hear the Dell's do " Standing Ovation", "My Pretending Days are Over" and "A Heart is a House for Love" is an experience. It's redundant for me to praise this group because they are just that good and this compilation is a worthy representation of the best they have given us over the span of their 50 plus year career! I give this CD as well as the group 5 stars and a heartfelt "Standing Ovation". ... show more

  • Soothing Sounds of Old School R & B is Timeless
It's hard to imagine any recording by the Dells not being good. This one transports you back to those days when the music told a story, you felt like they were singing to you! The harmonies and the range of the vocals is out of this world. If you're a Dells fan and don't have this, get it. If you're not familiar with the Dells but like old school R & B--this is for you! ... show more

  • THROWBACK THEATER: One of the many reasons why I love the 70's,
In the 70's, you were given groups that were not made of cardboard, but of pure flesh, bone, AND TALENT!!! The Dells had that and more to spare for future generations. The hits that they amassed were incredible, and their voices....MAN OH MAN....were top notch and credible. Take five guys with harmonies like these and make records that give you a little dance, but go all the way with the romantic...even the break-up songs...and you have a group that deserve to be everlasting! From the remake of STAY IN MY CORNER, to GIVE YOUR BABY A STANDING OVATION and on and on, until you get to A HEART IS A HOUSE, and you have a legacy that will sustain the test of time, and I'm glad to be a part of it. THE DELLS WERE DEM BOYZ!!!! ... show more
