I absolutely love this. Visually it's very striking. Raku is one of my favorite ceramic firing techniques, it really produces a lot of interesting results so I'm probably biased here to start. Something of particular note maybe for those unaware, and I didn't see it mentioned in the listing, but raku unless vitrified is a kind of rapid fire technique that more just sets the clay, leaving it kind of porous and not at all waterproof. Without an internal glaze or other treatment, my best guess is that these aren't waterproof at all, and they're mostly just... beautiful decorative objects. Could place artificial flowers, etc. in them, but I wouldn't risk trying to use them as a vessel. Texturally: these are the thing my roommate hates. They have a bit of a coarse feel that upsets him and he describes as sandpapery. I would say he's being dramatic and to my sense I would just describe it as like, dry rough finished pottery. I love this style, others don't. Your mileage may vary accordingly. That said, I really love this. Fit and finish of mine is excellent. Stands well, balanced, consistent throughout. Packaging was great. Dig the spelling play on raku. I think my only regret is getting the carbon copper instead of the half copper as in retrospect I think the contrast there is more my jam. Upside is I can clearly pick one of those up. These are really beautiful. Would make a great gift for those so visually inclined. ... show more

This is a nice piece overall. Usually, if I'm going to drop this much on a small piece of pottery, I tend to buy it at an art show where I can see it in person and talk to the artist before buying - but I needed a gift in a hurry and I am a sucker for raku pottery (as is the person for whom I ordered it). I was pleasantly surprised by the quality (I was not sure what to expect from an online purchase of this sort) and, while I will continue buying the vast majority of my pottery in person at art shows, this will make a fine gift. ... show more

This is a piece that will definitely draw the eye. It will fit nearly anywhere, but I recommend good lighting. It's very interactive for a vase...it is intriguing in a tactile way, which is excellent, because it can't be fully experienced from only one angle of view. I find myself wanting to turn it to admire different aspects of the glaze, or to direct attention and line of sight from other objects in the area to this, or from it to them... It is not 'put it on a shelf and forget it'. This is the kind of art that can be placed quietly and elegantly by itself in a corner and will be noticed anyway. This is a lovely and striking work of raku pottery from Malaysia, I believe. The colors are vibrant against the dark earthen pottery clay color. It looks as if the potter poured the color glaze on and let it run along the pot while holding it horizontally Cool-looking. I happen to really like raku pottery so this was a great find for me. Keep in mind that it is a handmade WORK OF ART and is relatively small: 6 1/2 inches tall approx. A nice size that can fit into many decors and places. Mine arrived securely packed with a foam surround and was pristine upon unpacking. Lovely display piece that I can recommend if you like raku pottery like I do. It comes with an explanation card from the manufacturer also which makes this piece also very giftable. ... show more

If you like a lot of fun color, this is definitely for you. It’s hard to judge a piece of art (as that’s generally based on personal taste), but I can the vase is well formed ceramic and the finish looks very high end. It’s quirky / new age due to the vibrant colors and most modern vases are very plain or neutral toned. I really enjoyed learning more about this style of art with the including reading material. It made more connected with the vase as well as the artist. This makes an excellent addition as a conversation piece or a bookshelf or as a unique gift for the Lisa Frank / Cosmic Space enthusiast in your life. ... show more

Though small, it has a wide mouth. Though not water resistant, you can leave it empty, and it still looks good. The center hole is dark and mysterious—the gray on the outside blends into the room like you are staring into space. Then the fireworks of color streaked across it are like the aurora borealis or lightning and fire. It is so interesting to look at. The texture is rough from the paint. When you walk into a room, it is the first thing your eye goes to. It also looks like strange coral in the bottom of the sea. It is relaxing to have it near you to glance at from your desk. The finish is unlike typical Western glass or unglazed finishes. It is a unique, unusual piece. I would leave it in a spot where it can catch some light to reflect off the dark background for the best visual effect. The base isn't perfectly flat.
