I recommend this 4D Build 321 piece Transformers Optimus Prime 3D Puzzle Model Kit with LED lights. My grandson is a big Transformer fan and I have been the person that gave him all the Transformer toys through out his life for Birthdays, Holidays and other special occasions. Optimus Prime was the very first Transformer figure I gave to him and he is excited to complete this Kit with me. There are 321 pieces and we must separate the pieces to assemble from the sheets they come in. Once we have it completed it will stand about 2 feet in height and will have the LED lights as accessories to highlight the model. I expect it will take us another couple of weeks to complete. We are only able to get together to do the assembly one day on the weekend and so far in 2 days we are about half way completed. The sheets are a foam type material and are pre-made and have the colors, the pieces have to be carefully separated. The Instruction guide is well presented and describes how the piece needs to be treated, folded etc. It does take a lot of care and we are moving slowly to prevent damaging any of the parts, especially the really small parts that have a tool for removal. Our goal is to complete the Optimus Prime Kit so my grandson can put it on a shelf in his room as a display piece. He realizes it is not a toy to play with, more a collectible that is a trophy to represent the accomplishment he and I have done. This 4D Build Transformer Optimus Prime Model Puzzle is definitely worth the time it takes to assemble, especially a Model my grandson is excited to add to his collection. He loves the colors and the LED lights that set this model a part from others he has collected. ... show more

This was far off the beaten path for me in terms of model making. This is like those cheap styrofoam airplanes you used to have to punch out of the rectangle sheet, that had like a plastic nose tip, and not a whole lot else. But the quality is much much much better. It's thicker sheets and there are so many pieces. I loved the build, but do want to point out some shortcomings. Some of the outer pieces are liable to fall off. the head seems disproportionately small compared to the lets. This guy not only does not transform, he doesn't have any wheels at all (not even representations of wheels). So it's not.... canon-accurate, so to speak. The LEDs are fine, but you see them through actual holes, so the brightness is highly variable. Wish they had some light diffusing screens over the holes so you're not looking directly at the LED. The price is roughly half that of the brick model, so that's something to consider. But it's a fun build, my 4 year old had a blast finding the pieces, punching them out and also punching out the small holes that allowed other pieces to attach. He wasn't able to put it together though since the tabs are liable to bend and get screwed up that way, and some directions are slightly vague. All that said, it's a genius piece of engineering and I'd highly recommend this to anyone who loves transformers, or wants to try some new kind of model making. ... show more

Ok - so - it's foamboard covered in glossy painted paper - so - be careful when you punch out the pieces - It reminds me of the metal form little statue things, but WAY bigger and a bit easier. I started building this with my 6yr old - so the going is slow - There are flat panel A - T - Each panel is clearly marked with lots of pieces that are marked on 1 side next to each piece and on the back side of the flat sheet ON the piece it self. Some of the pieces themselves also have small red dots on them for alignment with other pieces. The instruction book is VERY easy to follow - all the steps are clearly marked with the letters and numbers of each piece. The thought that went into this kit is VERY clear in every detail. I don't think this is over priced honestly. it takes some planning to properly make a good easy to follow product like this. My six year old was popping out the little slot tabs for me while I detached the big pieced from the sheets then assembled the pieces together. We only got through page 2. The book is 32 pages long, took us about an hour to get through those 2 pages.. So there's that. It might be slightly over priced but I don't know - this thing is going to stand pretty tall. See my pictures, we got half of 1 leg done in an hour. Judge for yourself. ... show more

    • Pricey, but fun and worth the cost!
If you are a Transformers fan, (and if you aren't why are you reading this review?) then this is a fun kit for building an almost 2' tall model of Optimus Prime. Assembly will take several hours over 2 or 3 evenings, and while it is intricate, there's nothing too difficult or confusing. The instructions are good, the pieces are well cut and fairly easy to remove, and assembly is straightforward. Do be aware that this is a static model. It doesn't move at all. It's a display, not a toy. The material is lightweight foam board, pre colored and painted. You carefully punch the pieces out of the holders, fold them according to the directions, and put them together. A punch is provided to help remove smaller pieces from the backing board and it does come in handy. The best advice I can give you is to take your time, and be patient. If you do, you will wind up with a nice display model of Optimus Prime! The age rating is for 12+ and that seems about right to me, although precocious 10 year olds, with adult help and supervision, can certainly see success. ... show more

Very cool 3D puzzle that is made for kids 12 and up. I built this with my son who is younger than 12 so he needed my help for sure. The build itself took us 2 evenings to complete probably around 3- or 4-hours total. The LED lights were fun to install and makes it cooler for the kids!

I ordered this to assemble with my nephew when he spent the weekend and we hand a blast assembling it. It took us quite a long time to assemble; total time (because it was spread out over two days) was around four to five hours. It reminds me of the 3D architecture puzzles from when I was a kid.
