Description

Topo Athletic MTN Racer Trail Running Shoe For Men These wide toe box trail running shoes are performance tuned for trail racing and speed-hiking. Vibram Megagrip outsole delivers optimal traction on any surface. Our Vibram trail running shoes feature a spacious lug design through the sole which offers excellent mud and snow release. Lateral drainage ports enhance water release and quick drying. The MTN Racer has the signature Topo Athletic roomy toe box, which prevents crammed pinky toes and black toenails on long runs, and a slightly stiff upper. Drainage ports, gaiter attachments, and a thin tongue, which sheds away dirt and pebbles from invading the inside of your shoe, complete the list of features that make the MTN Racer a trail master. • So far, so good.
Color: Red/Orange Size: 13
I've got three 10 mile trail runs in the Mtn. Racers so far. I ordered a size 13, they feel like a size 13. The initial run in them gave me a blood blister on top of my left little toe. I poked it and drained it and was fine for a 12 mile road run the next day. I was wearing Darn Tough mid weight merino wool socks, which are a bit thicker than a normal running sock. I could feel my toes sliding around a bit in the socks and in the front of the shoe, which is actually a good thing imho. The two runs I did after I did not have any problems with the toe area. The run I did in them last night was the fastest I have ever ran the loop I was on, not really related to the shoes, but they definitely did not negatively affect my cadence or stride that's for sure. As for the fit, lately I have been wearing Altra Olympus 3.5's, my last pair of Pearl Izumis EM Trail N3's, and Nike Pegasus road running shoes. I love the Olympus's cushioning, but they are kind of sloppy underfoot on technical trails. The Topo's feel more secure on rough trails, there is just less cush. I can't recall having any rocks poke through enough to make me conscious of them though. The shoes are less clown-like than the Altras or Hokas I notice even with my big feet I have less trouble on very narrow singletrack trails, sometimes I catch my feet on things on the edges of such trails. Overall I like the amount of comfort/protection so far, the ride is very nice throughout the entire process with just a slight rocker effect I thought I felt initially. The grippiness of the Vibram sole has been fantastic, but I have no wet trail or mud experience with them yet. I assume in thick mud they will function similarly to anything without deep mud lugs, i.e. slip and slide. If you came from Pearl Izumis like I did, and want a nice roomy toe box with excellent dry grip and reasonable comfort, I'd say give them a try. Note that I am not a paid reviewer, but if Topo wants me to review any other shoes they send me for free I will ;) ... show more

  • Best hiking shoes I've ever owned
Color: Red/Orange Size: 12
I tried the others (Altra, Oboz, Merrell, Keen, Columbia, etc.), and while I love Oboz boots, I decided to try these because of the 5mm drop and summertime heat. I can't do the zero drop, so I thought this might be a good, happy median. They did take some time to break in, but once I hit that mark (about 25 miles of break in and my feet getting used to them) these have been amazing! No blisters, excellent grip even on some rock scrambles and boldering, fantastic on many section hikes of the AT. They do great in water, and the gill system actually works to pump out the water for when the trail turns into "the creek". I've also done some trail running in them and they have excellent shock absorption and grip. I can't speak highly enough of them. I sized up a half size, and the wider toe box what great for me. ... show more

  • Favorite trail running shoe of all time!!
Color: Red/Orange Size: 11
I bought my first pair after trying them on in a local store and could not get over how comfortable they felt. I have since bought 3 more pair in case they stop making them sometime in the future. I had over 400 very rough miles on my first pair, I live in Utah, the trails are rocky and rough, these shoes held up like no other. I was worried about the durability of the fabric around the top of the toes, but after all the rough miles, they have not ripped or torn. Lots of room in the toes but not so much that I slip around. I feel confident that the shoes will not slip running uphill or down, even on snow packed icy trails, they still perform better than any other shoe I have put on my feet. I feel like I have found the perfect shoe for me. I could run on these for the rest of my days!! ... show more

  • Size up
Color: Red/Orange Size: 10.5
Seems like a great shoe. Runs small, my 7th pair of topos and this model is too small while the other 6 same size all fine. Just FYI!! I will be sizing up and probably loving it. Best damn running shoes on the market. Forget ALTRA!

  • Great shoes! Recommended!
Color: Red/Orange Size: 10
Love the feel, the nice roomy footbed...very grippy on the trail, even on wet rocks. I bought these for hiking not running. Ball of foot cushioning is perfectly adequate, heel as well. My Hoka's have more but these are just fine. Very well made and a pleasure to have in my quiver. Wearing now for 2 months. Recommended! ... show more

  • My neuroma issues disappeared
Color: Red/Orange Size: 10.5
I have had neuroma issues for about five years and have tried nearly 10 different trail runners (Altra, Salomon, Keen, Merrill) to varying degrees of success and comfort...until now! While those others promise to give you ample spreading room for your forefoot, Topo is the first to truly deliver (while not compromising on heel support/snugness). Feels like a custom fit--I'm back to long hikes in the PNW and neighboring ranges. Thanks Topo! ... show more

  • Finally a trail shoe that lasts
Color: Red/Orange Size: 13
I have several different models of Topo. They are lasting me around 500+ miles. The previous brand I wore - zero drop shoes would fail around 200 miles. The Mtn Racer is a great cold weather shoe. For warmer weather I run in the Ultraventure and Terraventure . Love Topo!

  • Great buy
Color: Red/Orange Size: 9
Great trail shoe. Well built and fit is spot on. The grip is outstanding and the toe box is roomy. Only downside is cost. Glad I waited till Black Friday.
