Description

Would you like your paintings to have more visual appeal? More "punch"? No matter what medium you are working in, you can create paintings that are interesting to your viewer, and here popular painter and instructor Tony Couch shows you how. There are only a few simple principles of design and those principles are the foundation of any successful painting. Tony Couch shows you how to apply these principles to your paintings, virtually guaranteeing that your painting will be successful. Once you begin to understand and use the principles taught in this book, you can deliberately and consciously build them into your paintings. You'll learn to make your work interesting through color harmony, repetition, balance and dominance, but at the same time create visual appeal through variety, contrast, gradation and alternation. Because Tony Couch reduces design to a few rules applied to a limited number of elements, you'll find his ideas easy to remember. And because there are so many paintings included here that illustrate these principles, you can see how they work in practice. After applying the lessons taught here to your own painting, you'll find that every painting you do will have more visual appeal - and lots of "punch." Read more Read less

  • Excellent instruction
You may not care for his style ( I love it) but how he breaks down what really makes a painting is fantastic! I took a week long course with Tony Couch once, and he was right--I wouldn't be any better at the end of the course than at the beginning---Wait What?? What I DID learn are all of the aspects in this book to make a REALLY GOOD painting. I have been following this for years. Thank you Tony--I am enjoying my art more than ever! And I did get better! ... show more

  • Excellent guide to successful composition
Couch is a wonderful instructor, and while his other books show more brush technique, etc this books focuses on composition. He explains the seven elements of design (size, shape, etc.) and how they relate to the eight principles of design (dominance, balance, harmony, contrast, etc.). His chapter on Value, which most beginning painters struggle with, is very instructive. Value is more important than hue. His illustrations of Whitney’s six value patterns show these patterns very clearly. While he is a watercolourist, these basic principles are applicable to any medium, or any style of painting. Highly recommend ... show more

  • Tony Couch's "Keys to successful Painting"
This is one of the best books I have ever purchased for helping me understand the aspects of setting up my art work prior to painting. The author, Tony Couch, easily explains the importance of principles and elements, shapes and sizes, lines and direction, texture, color, value and many other informative items to be considered when designing a piece of artwork. It has become my right hand referral book and I could easily read it over and over many times to incorporate the importance of all the design principles. I am so grateful that my art instructor recommended this book which, by the way, I purchased thru Amazon's used book services. I highly recommend that you give the used book area a try for purchases. I decided to order from the "used - like new" section and am extremely happy with the outcome. ... show more

  • Most Excellent
There are many books out there on watercolors and painting. This one you should own. Why? It is succinct, very clear, well-written, thorough, and comes with great examples. I gave it a four because five was crowded. Thank you, Tony Couch and Ed Whitney who grandfathered this design-driven approach I gather. ... show more

  • A lot of great information!
A lot of information on how to design better paintings in any medium. This is not just a watercolor book. The principles can be applied to any medium. The book has many images that help illustrate the principles being discussed. I personally felt a little bit overwhelmed by the amount of information, but as the author advises at the end of the book, you can work on one principle at a time. Then, as you gradually incorporate more of the principles you'll see your work improve. I highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • Best art instruction book ever written
This is probably the best book ever written on painting in any medium. Explains the concepts of composition, value and design very clearly. Over the years I have purchasd dozens of books on painting and none could hold a candle to this. Although I paint in oil, not watercolor as the author does, 98% of the information applies to all mediums. ... show more

  • Poor quality of print & paper: paperback edition..
I have an older version of this book from the local library. And the quality different between this latest version and the older one is very obvious. Print is dark and splotchy now. Paper quality is poorer. These are comments on the a book's physical quality, not on its Author's artistic style or accomplishments. ... show more
