Description

The joy of the journey is one that is identifiable to all collectors, no matter the object of their desire. There are books written about watches, watch companies, and watchmakers but very few exist written from the perspective of the watch collector. Enter: Mitch Katz. Mitch speaks to the collector in us all as he takes the reader on his 25-year watch-collecting journey. Developing a collection of anything means having the confidence to trust your own eyes and heart. As Mitch relates the unique and memorable experiences that led to his acquiring a number of one-of-a-kind watches, we see how, as his passion for watches grows, his collector's eye and instinct are honed. Whether it be squeezing in a part-time job selling watches (much to his wife's dismay), deciding to purchase a watch while in a dog park or a bathroom, or meeting some of the most significant watchmakers of modern times, the stories of how Mitch built his collection have become integral parts of his watches. Now, the memories evoked by the individual pieces, whether they be production or unique, only make each watch more special. Some call it insanity, others passion, in either event collecting is something we all do and derive pleasure from.Includes 107 sketches and grayscale photographs. • Written by a longtime collector who is open, honest and very real about his path of watch collecting
When one is asked to write a few words for a friend’s upcoming book on watches and his collecting journey, I didn’t know what the reality of seeing it in black and white might be. My words were placed next to one of the greatest contemporary independent watchmakers, one half of the truly brilliant Irish watchmaking brothers, John McGonigle! Stephen preceded us on page 1, with several other notable folk! I can say that it has been an absolute honor and a privilege of my professional life to have been a part of Mitch’s journey to where he is now. I am thrilled to see some of the truly exceptional pieces I’ve had the enormous pleasure of having go through my hands, end up in this book. Those independent watchmakers whose work he gravitated towards are the sort that I have championed for years now, over 20 when I think about it… A great fun read for anyone interested in horology and especially for the independent watchmaking enthusiast. These stories make the collecting journey so much more fun than just acquiring endlessly the watches you think one should…the path less traveled often reveals so much more in life! ... show more

  • One man's history of watch collecting
This book is a personal history of Mitch's 20 or 25 years of watch collecting. During this time he has managed to meet most of the major independent watch makers and tour the facilities of many of the major watch brands as well as speaking with the president or CEO of each company. Mitch counts many of these horological super stars as personal friends. The book starts with his first modest watch purchase which over the years leads to many one of a kind and other horological masterpieces which are added to his collection. There are many books written about watches but this is the only one I have read about one person's happy descent down the rabbit hole of watch collecting. This is a must read for any watch collector whether your watches are in the thousand or the hundred thousand dollar range. ... show more

  • Extraordinary Read Even For A Novice Collector
Mitch is a gifted writer and storyteller. This isn't merely a catalog of rare and interesting pieces, it's a chronicle of a collector's search for meaning. Each piece in his collection has a fascinating pedigree and he retells their stories in vivid thought-provoking detail. Highly recommend for collectors of all stripes. ... show more

  • The nicest read about collecting, not only watches
We usually read books about the mechanical features of watches or the trends in watches, but rarely do we encounter books on "Why Watches!" Mitch Katz has done an incredible job expressing the emotions behind collecting watches. We always say that watch collecting is about stories and people we meet, but then we go on with the same stories everyone tells. For the first time, this book tells stories about the collector, the sellers, the brands, and most importantly, the watchmakers. This book is not a one-read for me; I will get back to it and re-read these stories from time to time. Yes, I read the book in two go-s. I started in the evening, slept, and then continued to read it first thing in the morning and finish it :) ... show more

  • Time on My Hands is time well spent
What a delightful journey into the world of watches! Mitch’s passion for watches and collecting jumps off the pages in such a way that the reader can’t help but feel the same joy that Mitch surely felt every step along the way. Add it to your library, place it on the table as a great conversation starter, and enjoy reading!! ... show more

  • Funny and Insightful!
You don’t need to know a thing about watches or timekeeping to enjoy. As a complete novice to the world of watches I was captivated from start to finish about the fascinating and niche world of watch making. This book follows one man’s passion to collect for all the right reasons, and sweetly highlights the blossoming of his family’s support as he goes to great lengths to build his collection. ... show more

  • Finally a watch lover's book that's not all glossy photos
TIME ON MY HANDS After zipping through the Kindle version of this book, I can suggest: Have you ever wanted to visit Switzerland but don’t have a passport? Read this book. Do you wish you had a time machine to go back in time to meet George Daniels? Read this book. Is your wrist aching for a triple axis tourbillion? Read this book. Do you want to know the name of the oldest Pub in Ireland? Would you like a handy glossary of all the major parts and systems in a watch? Do you ever wonder about the sales strategy of a watch boutique “associate”? Do you fear dropping a good watch 5 feet into a marble floor? Should you? Have you ever bought a watch due to the hype surrounding it? How do you deal with the feeling of “Coulda, shoulda, woulda bought it, but didn’t”? Or the flip side how do you feel when you “shouldn’t have sold it, but did”? Do you fear sending a watch for a complete service; wondering how long? and how much? What should you do if you have a watch you don’t even know how to set? Do you have the chutzpah to ask a CEO if you can buy a watch off his wrist? You might find answers to all these questions in TIME IS ON MY HANDS. I enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it. ... show more
