  • Stunning Book
Great read and looks stunning on display! Some pages were warped a little.

  • Relaxing Read
I like starting my day with a cup of coffee and reading a section or two of this book. It's very relaxing to read and it's nice to see some great pictures of airy, colorful, and naturally decorated homes. No, it doesn't contain the deepest meaning and some of the installments can be repetitive, but I think there's a good lesson throughout the book to work on simplifying your life and taking more time to reflect and focus on what's important. It's the opposite of cluttered materialism, which is easy to fall into this day in age. I recommend it and look forward to reading some other similar books once I'm finished with it. ... show more

  • It's...OK?
Was expecting more from this one. It isn't bad, it's just...predictable. The featured homes are nice, sure, but not really special. In fact, at times I felt like I was flipping through one of those ghastly Restoration Hardware catalogues. That said, it's nicely put together and looks good on the shelf. So there's that. Just don't open it, I guess. ... show more

  • Worth it
Great coffee table book, inside and out!

  • A contradiction in terms
To me, this book has a dual character. The photographs of people who live in simply beautiful homes are interesting and inspiring to look at. The author's writing, however, earnest and sincere as it is meant, is full of cliches and platitudes about how to be happy in a home and that it's happiness that makes a home. The examples in the book are chosen because the people who live in these homes are beautiful, original and talented at making their homes inviting and shall I say, artistic? That the text then goes on to talk about how to prioritize when to buy furniture or make improvements according to one's financial status or place in one's career seems out of place alongside the sophistication of the visual portraits included in the book. In a way, the text sounds like a self-help guide with quotes sprinkled in from famous people like Lin Yutang. It seems to me that the creative and happy people portrayed in the book don't really need that kind of advice and that the sophisticated simplicity of their homes appear contradictory to the kind of primer the author provides. ... show more

  • Really lovely, just one suggestion for next book
This is a beautiful book— in terms of concept, imagery and text. The materials are also nice, as the book is well made. My only wish is that the book featured some homeowners that are nonwhite. It would have been great to get a diversity of approaches to simple living not only in terms of country and family structure, but also race/ethnicity. Perhaps the author could consider this for the next iteration ... show more

  • soul draining
As architectural/interior design sorts of books go, this one is disappointing. Basically a lifestyles of the wealthy urbanite showing off their awesome abodes that you little people will never be able to afford sort of tome, but unfortunately they mostly seem to have bad taste and even the photos are on the soft and listless side, so they are not something one would even aspire to. I can honestly say that not one of the insipid, lifeless, listless, soulless (I'm searching for a properly depressing description here) dwellings featured here is one I would particularly care to even spend much time in, let alone be forced to live there. When it comes to audio it is possible for bass to be so low in a movie or music that one is unable to hear it, but one can feel it in ones core/ internal organs as a sense of unease--that's what it is like flipping through this book. At least there is a bit of vapid, self-congratulatory writing to go with the listless photography though..."that time I was living in Morocco" *insert obligatory shot of old Landrover Defender* ... show more
