Description

Build your own passive solar greenhouse for year-round food production in any climate Fresh, local nutrient-dense fruits vegetables are hard to find in winter in cold climates. Growing warm-weather crops like tomatoes, bananas, avocados, and other perennials is nearly impossible using conventional structures. The solution for millions of backyard and small-scale commercial growers is self-heating solar greenhouses. The Year-round Solar Greenhouse is the one-stop guide to designing and building greenhouses that harness and store energy from the sun to create naturally heated, lush growing environments even in the depths of winter, covering principles of solar greenhouse design and siting, glazing material properties and selection, controlling heat loss, ventilation, and construction methods. Additionally, an in-depth section covers sustainable ways of heating the greenhouse without fossil fuels, including using thermal mass and storing heat underground with a ground to air heat exchanger. Variations include attached solar greenhouses, earth sheltered greenhouses, plus integrating hydroponics and aquaponics. More than a dozen case studies from across North America provide inspiration and demonstrate specific challenges and solutions for growing year-round in any climate. Grow your own food, anytime, anywhere using the power of the sun! Read more

  • Excellent material
Lindsey is an excellent writer making it an easy and interesting read. She covers many possible scenarios and leaves the reader with enough data to formulate a plan / design. Well worth the time and money invested.

  • Four stars
I love my book wished it had more information.

  • Comprehensive book
This is a very comprehensive book on the different methods for building a green house that will majorly extend you season or even go year-round, unlike a normal green house. Because it covers so many techniques, it is a little lacking on full details for implementing any one in particular. If you aren't really good at figuring things out, you may want to use this book to determine what techniques you want to implement and then get another book to get more details. If you are extra handy, this is probably enough to get the job done. ... show more

  • Best Information Out There!
First I saw the preview of the book, so I read the preview! Then I saw the topic while searching online in Mother Earth News, and it was an article written by the author about the book! Then I saw a video on YouTube in my research, and it was by the same company Ceres, the author! Thank you (to the authors) for all of the resources, and what a great book! ... show more

This book presents interesting aspects of a greenhouse that we had not considered. Great advice, good price and promptly shipped. Thanks.

  • Clear writing, thorough coverage of the topic.
I am working with Ms. Schiller's company to design a small solar greenhouse modeled on her principles. This is a very thorough and well written book that should open up new worlds for someone accustomed to thinking that greenhouses are nothing but metal channel and clear panes of glazing. In particular the underground piping system, the GAHT system described here, is a very affordable breakthrough to create a greenhouse that will function year round. I tried to introduce these concepts to a fellow resident of my town who chose to ignore them. His greenhouse fish pond froze over this past winter. Such a thing is inconceivable if you follow these principles and guidelines. ... show more

  • Great resource
This book gives both recommendations, AND the reasons why. Most helpful. There are no arguments in this book, just a lot of good discussions. I very much appreciate the time and dedication the authors put into this treatise. I am now more confident than ever that I can build a year-round solar greenhouse in Wyoming at 5,500 feet elevation, that will not eat my lunch in energy bills. Another thing I found very helpful were the recommendations for further reading. 3 more books to digest this winter. ... show more
