  • A Totally AWESOME Blu Ray Release of A Great Cult Classic!
This great old cult classic was fantastic when it first hit the theaters. And while it was a great movie with really good special effects and decent acting when it was released, the newly remastered Blue Ray release it absolutely awesome. More on the BR release features and its contents in a moment. Featuring a terrific driving musical score from musical legends of the era like Billy Idol, Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue, The Wraith is a movie that epitomizes the old Sicilian mafioso adage that "Revenge is a dish best served cold". But it is also a love story that transcends death with the apparent help of some friendly extraterrestrials that provide the murdered young man with resurrection and some really awesome and deadly hardware. And the most impressive piece of this deadly hardware of course is the superb, jet black Dodge Turbo Interceptor which may be the real star of the show. This was a concept car originally built by Dodge to be used as a pace car on the 1981 Indy Car World Series racing circuit. The story is set in an area of the US that's had more than its fair share of UFO sightings and the involvement of ETs in the story is alluded to in several different places even though we never see them, unless you look really close and quick. The story revolves around a couple of teenage lovers; Jamie played by Charlie Sheen, and Keri, played by the beautiful Sherilyn Fenn. Unfortunately for them, there is a brutal, psychotic thug gang leader named Packard, who also wants Keri for himself. As psychotic as he is, he really does appear to love Keri in a twisted, possessive way but she certainly doesn't feel the same way about him. Consumed by jealousy, Packard and his gang of brutal thugs break in on the young lovers in their romantic hide-away and throw a blanket over Keri's head and grab her so she can't see who is attacking them while they brutally beat and murder Jamie, after which they shove his body over a cliff in his burning car. A year goes by and then one day a new kid named Jake, rides into town on a motorcycle and strikes up a conversation with Keri and begins to develop a relationship with her. In the meantime, Packard and his gang of thugs have been stealing hot cars from other kids by forcing the kids to race against his gang for ownership of their car. Obviously Packard and his gang are not above cheating to make sure they win these street races and get the ownership papers on the cars of the losers. But suddenly Packard and his gang find themselves being challenged to races by the sleek, black turbo interceptor. And as each gang member races against this deadly car, they end up very dead from horrific crashes that should have left their bodies as nothing but charred cinders. But strangely that is not what happens to their bodies in these horrific, flaming crashes. In the meantime, the local sheriff, played to the hilt by Randy Quaid, is trying to get enough evidence on Packard and his gang to put them away and also get a handle on who is driving that black interceptor that seems to be killing off Packard's gang members one by one. He soon finds out that is not only impossible to catch the black interceptor, it's also impossible to stop it even with road blocks. All in all it's a great and entertaining movie with terrific race scenes and good character development for all the principal characters as well as the major supporting characters. The racing scenes and crash scenes are really well done with very good special effects that stand up well even today. Apparently the Japanese really liked this movie because they took the time and trouble to completely remaster it in Blu Ray with an augmented 5.1 audio track. This great classic has never looked so good nor sounded so good. What you get is a completely remastered movie in 1080i (16x9) with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The video is sharp and crystal clear with vivid color saturation and the 5.1 surround sound is awesome. The good news is that even though this is a Japanese production, the movie is still in English but with Japanese subtitles. Fortunately you can turn those off. A downside though is that there are no English subtitles available for the hearing impaired. The main menu options are also still in English. The extra featurettes and cast interviews are also in English but the menu options to get to them are in Japanese. The BR release also includes a really great booklet with a lot of stills from the movie and the making of the movie. Unfortunately all the text in the booklet is in Japanese. Overall this a truly great re-release of a classic and well worth the price. ... show more

  • Fun and nice look at actors before they were stars
Very early look at stars before they were, especially Sheen. The car was a concept car out of Detroit. Nice plot, lots of fun.

  • Very cool for its time. Young Charlie Sheen debuts.
The movie WRAITH starring a young CHARLIE SHEEN from the nineteen eighties was a very impressive piece of work for its time. It was one of the first movies to use computer enhancement. And to this day, the car that the WRAITH dove in this flick would be considered bad to the bone, and would fit in impressively on some rich Californian coast boulevard! The acting was better than average for the time and budget allotted to do the film. AND! This was a TV shoot! Not a full bankrolled Box Office deal. Hows that for interesting. For those whom have not seen this classic, I urge you to do so...here is a review/summery without TMI... A girl has lost her first love. He was murdered. An abusive boyfriend, the local rich kid, and leader of a local "super car gang" that shakes down people for their pink slips (whether they want to race or not) has gone waaaay past obsessive and treats her like his personal man meat. A heartbroken brother is still hurting over his bros mysterious death. A sheriff hounding the gang relentlessly to get to the bottom of the happenings. WHEN, out of nowhere, the WRAITH appears; seemingly falling from the skies. Is he a ghost? An angel? A demon? No one knows who the mysterious alien is, but he's pi$$ed and he takes his supercharged car (no one has ever seen its like) and goes on a rampage....a RACE of revenge.. Lots of good stunt driving. Lots of fast cars. This movie is very cool for its time! ... show more
