Description

At the end of the 19th century, railroads entered the mountains of eastern and central West Virginia for the first time. This opened up vast areas of virgin forest to the lumberman. Later, valuable coalfields were discovered beneath the forests. The development of the region was in full swing by the first decades of the 20th century. G. H. Broadwater, a photographer from Thomas, West Virginia, traveled the Western Maryland Railway and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in state between 1906 and 1912, taking over 2,000 photos of these budding industries, workers and developing towns. Broadwater s photographs give vivid insight into the early development of West Virginia s industries and a fascinating period in the states history. Read more

  • This book contents are NOT about the WM railroad itself but its surroundings
This book vividly provides an ample amount of the late-1900 structures along the Western Maryland RR in West Virginia. However, if your interest is specifically the WM Railway's equipment and operations, this book illustrates very little of it.

  • A treasure for readers interested in the history of the Western Maryland, or in railroading in general
If you're interested in the history of railroading in Appalachia, you'll find this book fascinating. Replete with historical photos, it provides an insight into the Western Maryland, the communities through which it passed and the impact it had on both its workers and its customers.

  • A+
Covers much of the Elkins to Cumberland line. Other books have much more details but the generality of this book works for casual fans of the railroad.

  • Great reference of early WM and WV
Great photos and reference of the WM railway and northern WV history. My only complaint is, this book covers up to the 30's and nothing past that.
