Description

Known only as The Unit, they are an ultra-secret contingent of Special Forces soldiers who operate outside the usual military chain of command.     • Kill Hector and Cancel the Show? Why?
I'm very sad that Hector was killed during Season 3. He was a favorite of mine. Worse yet, I hear the series was cancelled after Season 4. Of course, they always kill the best shows and the leave the most stupid and inane shows running for decades.

Scott Foley, Max Martini and the gang are very good in their roles. The acting and directing is excellent. For the most part, it's realistic, compelling, and always leaves you wanting more. But, they ruined it by putting a woman in with the guys. One of the main characters in the unit is killed in action, and even though it's never been done before, of course a woman takes his place. I hate that. I want it to be real and feel truthful. There is absolutely no chemistry between her and the rest of The Unit and it's completely inexplicable why they would sell out. And they have many females in important roles, so it's not like it was an all male show. I went from binge watching the show, to not watching anymore because the suspense, realism, and team cohesion went from riveting to boring. What a shame. I would have given this season a 5, but rather I'm tempted to give it a 1 for them selling out to this all too familiar gimmick. What a colossal disappointment! ... show more

    • Good show. Well worth watching. Review applies to all seasons thru S4
Show as a whole is a good show . The bond of respect, camaraderie, internal political manipulation with upper chain is all well done for the most part. I would take this on an episode by episode basis. They aren't all great but there are some great ones. When it started the relationships of the operators with their wives was well done - it revealed the challenges of a civilian (wife) trying to deal with a hard core soldier while living a routine day to day life, while somewhat well contrasting it with a soldier who deals with the fragility of life daily, at a level far more acute than just a routine soldier, due to the nature of his missions. This difficult relationship, I believe, is a large part of PTSD. The UNIT's attempt to show this was a decent effort at times. HOWEVER, apparently the writers lost their way because the entire involvement of "the wives" subsequently degrades to garbage "filler" material, PTA( yeah, like grade school) level, uninteresting and completely unnecessary material in this and later seasons. To the point where I began to fast forward whenever I saw any of the wives show up on screen. This stigma created a "self'cannibalized" event for the show because although there may have been portions that were good that included the wives, I never saw them and am okay with it. I don't think the quality of good TV or film should ever be compromised or traded for quantity. ... show more

    • The series has gone off the tracks
I began to wonder if "The Unit" was going off the tracks during the Papua New Guinea episode late during season 2, which involved 1960s-stereotype headhunters with bones through their noses and looked as though it had been filmed on a cheap soundstage. When I got to episode 3 of season 3, which involved what Jason Blane referred to as "a single-engine Piper Cub" (as though there's any such thing as a multiengine J3). Now, why anyone would want to commit a terrorist act using one of the slowest, oldest and most vulnerable general aviation airplanes available is beyond me--trust me, I have plenty of Cub time--other than that it was cheap for the producers to use. Then we get to watch "Bob" chasing the Cub with a Cherokee, with the little clear-view side window wide open the whole time for some reason, and the shot is done from the old cinematographer-crouching-on-the-ground POV, this in an era when everything on earth has been filmed in real action from external cameras. Meanwhile, the rest of the Unit is back at the airport, standing on the ramp blazing away at terrorists on the roof of a small hangar, and for some reason, these sharpshooters and snipers suddenly can't hit the broad side of...well, of a hangar. I gave up halfway through the episode and will never watch another. Obviously the series can no longer afford high production values or capable writers. I give it two stars rather than one only because seasons 1 and 2 were so good. ... show more

    • The Unit is Back to More Plausible Ground
The Unit is led by Dennis Haysbert and Scott Foley and well supported by a strong cast. After wandering into political conspiracy fantasy land at the end of Season 2, the series returns to firmer thematic ground in Season 3. This is a military action adventure contrasted against (and deliberately "spiced up" by) the off-duty problems and affairs of Unit members, wives, lovers, and assorted family. At times, loose ends of the plot get dropped from episode to episode (example: we never learn how semi-nude pictures taken by a crush of Tiffy's daughter and sent out to her entire school ultimately affect either kid). But on balance, this series is entertaining and at times realistic to the scenarios faced by small units of Army Special Forces (Force Delta) in secret operations around the world. ... show more

    • Admirable, Yet Flawed
The first 2 seasons of The Unit were excellent. But certain story elements started to degrade an otherwise good series. The wife of one of The Unit sergeants has an on-again-off-again affair with The Unit colonel. First one wants to get married but the other doesn't; then vice versa. After 2 seasons of this unnecessary melodrama, the whole thing seemed tedious. The special forces missions continued to be exciting in season 3. The can-do attitude, the willingness to do whatever it takes to win is inspirational. But sometimes they did so with an attitude of the ends justify the means. They stooped to less than honorable behavior in order to accomplish their objectives. For example, the story of infiltrating a Hispanic gang within the Army base involved 2 betrayals of trust. The courage, skills and never quit attitude of the special forces are admirable. But the methods used sometimes contained ethical compromises that flawed this high standard of character. ... show more
