Description

Nick and Nora Charles cordially invite you to bring your own alibi to The Thin Man, the jaunty whodunit that made William Powell and Myrna Loy the champagne elite of sleuthing. Bantering in the boudoir, enjoying walks with beloved dog Asta or matching each other highball for highball and clue for clue, they combined screwball romance with mystery. The resulting triumph nabbed four Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and spawned five sequels. Credit W.S. "Woody" Van Dyke for recognizing that Powell and Loy were ideal together and for getting the studio's okay by promising to shoot this splendid adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel in three weeks. He took 12 days. They didn't call him "One-Take Woody" for nothing.

  • At last! Nick and Nora arrive on Blu-Ray, and the results are stunning!
Magnificently mixing the combination of murder mystery and martinis, the irresistible William Powell and Myrna Loy shine in the 1934 M-G-M classic that has earned new fans despite the passage of time. The wit and elegance of this superb film defies time in its ability to entertain and amuse. I’ve owned this film on VHS, then laserdisc, then DVD, but I had resigned myself to never being able to experience it as I assume it looked when it was for first released to theaters some 85 years ago. It always looked so worn and weather-beaten. I never imagined it could look as remarkably sparkling as it does on this new Blu-ray release. The restoration undertaken here has given this gem a whole new lease on life. The clarity and immaculate image of this new presentation was almost like seeing a different film. Remarkable. Strongly recommended! ... show more

  • Classic Great Movie in a poor quality format
The review has nothing to do with the content or plot of the movie - it is a classic and is worth the purchase. However I already own this movie on DVD and have it recorded from TCM onto my DVR. I only bought this version as it is advertised as HD. I like the movie so much I wanted to get the clearest picture. However this download version is not a bit better than what I have and because I started the streaming the film I am no longer eligible for a return. I feel Amazon should stand by the quality they state and give a refund for unsatisfactory quality. Especially if the whole movie has not been watched. ... show more

  • Sophisticated, beautiful and entertaining
Simply a joy to watch. The acting of the principals is superb, the settings are glorious, the story interesting. On first viewing, I found it difficult to follow the storyline--keeping up with all the characters and who was who, etc.--but it somehow did not detract from the enjoyment, and only made it more viewable a second and third time, when you could finally grasp it all. Powell and Loy have such a chemistry between them, it is irresistible. This is just one of those once-in-a-lifetime type films that can never be reproduced, and is thankfully preserved for us to enjoy 80+ years later. ... show more

  • Excellent Movie: Difficult To Follow In First Viewing?
As comprehensively noted by many reviewers, this is a wonderful classic movie, with excellent actors, superb writing, and a compelling plot line. As with many movies, a second viewing was both worthwhile and enlightening -- and, from a comprehension standpoint, very helpful. Without spoiling the plot, I learned in the first viewing that it is critically important to keep track of each of the actors who enter the action. With respect to the included special features, watching “Thin Man” TV show was worth the time. Quite frankly, the customized convertible Is a star of the show and is worth the price of admission, as is seeing Peter Lawford in action - particularly since I have not focused too much on his body of work. Additionally, the brief cameo at the very end steals the show! Any guesses as to the actor? After watching this DVD, I did purchase a Thin Man movie set to watch the individual films over time. ... show more

  • Fun to watch
This classic movie is simply a joy to watch. It’s not intellectual, it’s not all that dramatic, but it’s just plain fun to watch. A murder mystery on the edge of being a comedy. You owe it to yourself to see it.

  • Best this movie has ever looked !
Warner’s new Blu ray is like finding a perfectly preserved print from 1934. I wasn’t sure it was really going to matter for a movie like this...but it definitely does. Essential purchase if you love early 30s cinema like I do.

Are you kidding me you’re asking for a view on Myrna Loy and William Powell doesn’t get any better than these guys if you’ve never watched it watch it
