The physical book itself is great-- perfect condition, perfectly comfortable size to hold, the type is a comfortable size and font, if that matters to anyone. No typos at all, which always irritate and disappoint me a little. The book itself is perfect. Now the story-- I read The Shining in my teens and it scared the crap out of me back then. The one part about the dog man in the hallway scared me so badly that I had to stop reading for a day and keep all the lights on at night 😂 and I've never forgotten it. It's the only book I've ever read that actually scared me like that. This time around it was the hedge animals that creeped me out to the point where I had to take a break to chill out. It's amazing how much of a scare King can give with just one sentence. Those hedge animals gave me seriously creepy goosebumps. Stephen King is a master. I've never read any other author I love as much as him, and I am a total bookworm nerd, from literary fiction to biographies to nonfiction to the backs of shampoo bottles lol Jack's struggle to maintain his sanity for the sake of his family is so well written, King gives such depth to his characters. So much detail about the inner workings of Jack and his struggle with his addiction. His descent into madness is so perfectly paced and described. It flows. You can feel it, the fear and suspense keep building and the ride to the top is so excitingly creepy and scary that it's hard to put this book down, even if you're so creeped out you feel like your own house is watching you. I'm on a SK reading binge this summer and am making my way back through all his books, he has so many that I haven't read in years. I've reread Needful Things, The Stand, Under The Dome, Desperation and The Regulators, the Mr. Mercedes trilogy (all 3 are awesome), Sleeping Beauties (it was okay, interesting that a story like that was written by two men), and am working on The Institute right now, but The Shining is my absolute favorite. It's so masterfully written, the entire book is so wonderfully scary and creepy and suspenseful and terrifying. If you love Stephen King then you gotta read The Shining. And then follow it up with Doctor Sleep! Also very good, but still not as good as The Shining. P. S. The book is so much better than the movie, and the movie is obviously awesome ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ... show more

Was absolutely fascinated by the movie (the stanley kubrick one) and wanted to explore more of this captivating world. The book did not disappoint. It has a different feel from the movie as significant events are present that weren't in the movie and the ending is quite different. But overall really enjoyed this story too and captivated me just the same. ... show more

    • The hotel does exist
I love Stephen king's work. This is an old movie but still good to watch. The author was inspired by the true experiences of some guests in the hotel and he himself had something to say. You have to watch the movie and then find out all about it :) and after that watch it again. The book is a little different than the movie, but the movie was inspired by it. so it is cool to know about the two (movie and book). ... show more

Great page turner!!! Decently took awhile to get to the end but was well worth the read. Never saw the movie, hoping it’s not a disappointment.

Oh my gosh, Stephen King is fabulous. This is the first book of his that I've read and dang. I've already ordered It and I can't wait to jump into another one of his worlds 🤩

    • A Cozy Horror
The Shining is the second book by Stephen King I’ve read, the first being IT, which gave quite a lot to live up to. I quickly realized that IT was a beast of its own, and not to judge the Shining too closely to IT. The Shining gives me the vibes of a cozy horror, something to curl up with in front of a fire, in a warm blanket, reading wide eyed as your home melts away and you find yourself standing in front of the Overlook hotel. As always, Stephen King is a master of description, sometimes in eye-rolling ways but often in profound, wonderful ways. When I started this novel, I turned to my best friend and said, “Do you know that feeling when you’ve been reading subpar novels for awhile, and then you open a book by a master and it just feels like you’re sinking into the professional quality?” That was how this felt. I’ve reviewed a number of less than great books lately, and I knew that if I read The Shining, it would live up to Mr. King’s standard. I knew very early on that I was in for a good read- and I wasn’t disappointed. That said, it had enough flaws to bump down its score. Let me start with those. This novel is a descent into madness, and I realize that it has to be written a certain way to portray that. Yet… There were many points in this book where the way the characters acted was confusing and out of place. Mostly outbursts that didn’t make sense to me as a reader, despite Jack’s temper. The personalities of the characters, however, read clearly and with a ton of charm- which is why I struggled a lot, particularly with earlier scenes, with them having sudden moments out of character beyond belief. I also need to note Stephen King’s usual anti-charm of using sexual description as an element of horror, something that was memorable, but often unnecessary. I found that pieces of the story felt a little bit muddled, or maybe just too obscure for my tastes. At times, it felt like something more was missing, and just didn’t quite touch a 5 star review for me, as IT had. However, this book was a more than average read for me- enjoyable to the end, fast paced enough for my standards. I loved the personalities of Dick Halloran and Jack Torrance, the friendship between Dick and Danny, the way King showcased that Danny loved his dad dearly, the brief hints of jealousy from his mother. I loved the little details of the family dynamics, and the history of the Overlook hotel. This book is well worth reading- and I would say that even people who don’t typically read horror might end up enjoying this. It actually didn’t give me a strong horror vibe. Is cozy horror a thing? And as a final note: The movie did this book dirty. Watch the movie first, or as a totally separate entity- do not connect it to this book, you will end up disappointed in the movie like I did.
