  • Fascinating look at a real life person
Ree Drummond is well known for her successful cooking program on the Food Network, for her wonderfully practical and delicious cookbooks, her fascinating and useful blog, her talent as a photographer, her work in homeschooling and, at least in my view, for her incredibly handsome and attractive husband. Now we get to read the true story of how Ree met and married "Marlboro Man" her real life, oh-so-sexy husband. This very enjoyable book is a quick read because you can't put it down. I found myself reading late into the night wanting to find out what would happen on the sometimes rocky road to the altar. Ree is open and honest but charmingly discreet about their dating and about the family crisis that threatens to blow up all her well made plans for a lovely wedding. While we know there are problems in her parents marriage (they eventually divorce), we don't know what the root of the problems is. Her discrete handling of this difficult family tragedy is respectful and tasteful. In this day of Hollywood journalism and way too much information about almost everyone, it is refreshing to be able to read a story that respects the real life characters and their intimate lives. We truly feel the pain of the individuals involved without having to intrude upon their private lives. While Ree does not discuss her religious beliefs it is clear that she is grounded in "good, old-fashioned values" and that those values have held her in good stead through out her many career and life changes. Originally planning to only stay in Oklahoma for a short time before starting law school in Chicago, Ree shares her self doubt and worry and the challenges of breaking up with a long time boyfriend back in Los Angeles and then quickly deciding to marry her cowboy and live on a ranch. We can see her grow in confidence (sometimes) and maturity as she faces and deals with the changes that life in small town Oklahoma presents. This book was a joy to read the whole way through. I have to admit that I wanted to know more about Ree and Marlboro Man (she never tell us his name but it is easy to find on the internet). Buying one of her cookbooks (I now have both) lead me to this charming autobiography and now I hope she will combine her many blog posts and continue her story in more books about her life with the VERY handsome Marlboro Man and their four children. ... show more

  • It's romance.....it's life.......it's real.......
First off: I read MANY romance novels. Most of them have a good degree of heat. This true story is written with one's children in mind and the fact that they may one day read what Mom has written. I would have written it the same way and some things only need to be implied and I'm good with my imagination anyway. That said: I loved this story. It's so sweetly wonderful. It's romance of the highest degree. It's Clark Gable and Carole Lombard caliber. The stories are at times sadly poignant and other times quite hilarious. If something could go wrong for Ree then it did! She and her cowboy reminded me of Lucy and Ricky on more than one occasion. Lucy getting into a tight situation and Ricky standing back and silently watching. Okay; Ricky Ricardo would get pretty excited and the Marlboro Man is calm and collected. This book skips around and months may not be covered but the overall feeling is that time passes and life moves ahead. It's not disjointed at all; but flowing. Ree Drummond is very honest about herself. She knows her weaknessess and sets out to better herself on a continual basis. Rather like the rest of us in the human race! The romance parts: great. The family parts: sweet and sometimes not so. The ranch life: tough but in a way that makes me cheer that there are ranchers out there who do what they do so we can eat. They love their land and know it's value is beyond money. Thank god for them. I recommend this book highly. It's an easy read and left me with a smile in knowing there are families out there like the Drummonds. ... show more

  • Great love story
I really enjoyed this book. It is a great love story and it brought back so many memories of when my husband and I were dating. I laughed until I cried so many times while reading this book that I lost count. I loved the part when her mother knocked on the truck window at 2 a.m. in the morning to ask if it were Ree in the truck. First, what mother would casually stroll up to a strange truck parked in her driveway at that time of the morning dressed in her nightclothes and knock on the window? Wouldn't most of us just phone 911? There was a very cold night when my husband and I were dating that we sat out in his truck in the driveway until odd hours of the night. We had the motor running to keep the heat going and that means the running lights were on (keep in mind that we were in our thirty's.) My father attempted to come out of the house several times to bring the garbage to the street for the next morning's trash collection. Each time he opened the door, the lights blinded him. He finally just gave up and went to bed. We still, to this day, laugh about that incident. Ree Drummond tells a story about how they both got food poisoning from lobster while on their honeymoon in Australia. Oh! How I laughed! My husband and I traveled to Boston a few years ago and we ate lobster. I had this idea that if I ever ate lobster, it would be in Boston. I had a reaction to the lobster and was violently ill for most of the night. I remember lying in bed willing the impending stomachache to just go away (we've all been there.) The longer I lay there, the worse it got until finally (I'll leave out the details) I couldn't pretend any longer. My husband was so scared that he prayed the entire night. I felt so sorry for the people in the hotel suite next to us. I am certain; their stay was not pleasant thanks to me. My husband wanted to take me to the hospital but I was so sick, I could not move. I have to say, it wasn't funny then, but reading about the Drummond honeymoon made me cackle aloud! Ree is a down to earth woman to which we can all relate. She does not pull any punches and tells you like it is with humor. Anyone who loves a love story will enjoy this book. It is about meeting Mr. Right and falling hopelessly in love. It is a great read. [...] ... show more
