  • Five Gloriously Twisted Stars for The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley
Oh, what a deliciously tangled web Lucy Foley weaves! The Paris Apartment is a moody, intoxicating romp through the shadowy corridors of an elegant yet ominous Parisian building. Imagine Clue, but with croissants, suspicious neighbours, and secrets stacked higher than the Eiffel Tower. Told in rotating perspectives (like an emotional game of musical chairs), this audiobook kept me guessing until the very last breath. Jess is the perfectly flawed protagonist—a bit of a mess, wholly relatable, and determined to uncover what happened to her slippery half-brother Ben. And the neighbours? Positively crawling with red flags, each more enigmatic and unnerving than the last. There’s an almost Hitchcockian elegance to the way Foley builds suspense with every passing chapter. Clare Corbett and the ensemble of narrators are utterly sublime. The performance adds layers of tension and charm that make it feel like you’re eavesdropping through keyholes and whispering through wine glasses. In short: Read it. Listen to it. Then double-lock your doors and side-eye your neighbours. The Paris Apartment is a riveting, glamorous, and sinister delight. Bravo, Lucy Foley. You’ve done it again. ... show more

  • Paris Apartment with Secrets
🔆REVIEW🔆 𝑴𝒂𝒚 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒚!! 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: I LOVE THIS BOOK! I thought about this book when I wasn’t reading it, my mind would wonder about what would happen next and what the final scene would entail. It was an easy read and I didn’t want it to be over. This was my first @lucyfoleyauthor novel and I purchased her two previous novels before I finished this one. I am suddenly a huge fan! 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝: ➖The setting, I love all things Paris and while I don’t feel it made a huge part of the book I enjoyed it. ➖The story wasn’t one that felt forced. The story unfolded gently and with good pacing. ➖The characters were very diverse and they all surprised me in one fashion or another. The concierge was my favorite. ➖I really enjoyed the ending 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐭𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: ➖There weren’t as many intense scenes as I had hoped for originally. This isn’t necessarily negative but I was hoping my blood pressure would have been raised a few more times. ➖In hindsight I wish the hidden door, the dumbwaiter, and the cellar were more present throughout. I think I anticipated they would have a larger role once we learn of their existence. ➖The changing perspectives makes for great reading, but in some situations I felt I wanted some more depth. ... show more

  • An interesting mystery
The story, especially in the first two thirds, was very slow with nothing much happening. It was interesting though and I kept reading. Jess and the rest of the characters are not likeable. Jess had it rough growing up and some of her behavior, you could surmise, is a result of that but she had me shaking my head more than once. Apart from the building where much of the story takes place, there's not much atmosphere and that detracted from the narrative. Some of the answers concerning Ben's disappearence and the residents of the other apartments. were revealed early on and it was not too difficult to put together most of what heppened, not all of it. The end moved along much more quickly but I would not consider this a thriller, just a mystery. It was a quick read which was a plus for me. ... show more

  • Great adult mystery book, I was hooked!
I really love this book! Full of mystery that had me guessing until the very end, though there was one twist I did not see coming! Crazy how I was so right about one thing and taken completely by surprise at the end. Age-wise, I’d say 17+ There is strong language used throughout, and minor mention of sex, though it doesn’t get into it and kinda fades-to-black; but there are more adult themes in this novel so I wouldn’t consider it for youth. But that’s just my personal opinion. ... show more

  • I liked the multiple surprises at the end
Jess Hadley goes to Paris to stay for a while with her half-brother Ben, only to find he’s disappeared. So she stays in his posh apartment to try and figure out what’s become of him. The tenants are peculiar. There’s something faintly sinister about the elegant old building. And the aged concierge watches every coming and going with creepy intensity. Jess is no angel. She picks locks and is not above a casual theft, but she has a good heart. And she’s determined to find out what happened to her only living relative, no matter what it takes. It takes a lot. The plot encompasses murder, blackmail, illicit love, betrayal, prostitution — and a marvelously dysfunctional family. Much of the drama revolves around Ben, a self-centered, manipulative charmer. He wants to write that big sensational story that will make his name as a hot investigative journalist. Will the story will ever be told? Will Ben ever be found, dead or alive? There’s plenty of action in The Paris Apartment. The author’s assumption that we know not a word of French (and need a lesson) can be irritating. But otherwise, I found this novel pretty entertaining, though perhaps a bit sophomoric. ... show more
