Description

Wes Anderson brings his dry wit and visual inventiveness to this exquisite caper set amid the old-world splendor of Europe between the World Wars. At the opulent Grand Budapest Hotel, the concierge M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) and his young protégé Zero (Tony Revolori) forge a steadfast bond as they are swept up in a scheme involving the theft of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune—while around them, political upheaval consumes the continent. Meticulously designed, The Grand Budapest Hotel is a breathless picaresque and a poignant paean to friendship and the grandeur of a vanished world, performed with panache by an all-star ensemble that includes F. Murray Abraham, Adrien Brody, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe, Jude Law, Harvey Keitel, Jeff Goldblum, Mathieu Amalric, Tilda Swinton, and Bill Murray. Director-approved blu-ray special edition features • 2K digital transfer, supervised by director Wes Anderson, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack • New audio commentary featuring Anderson, filmmaker Roman Coppola, and actor Jeff Goldblum • Selected-scene storyboard animatics • The Making of “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” a new documentary about the film • New interviews with the cast and crew • Video essays from 2015 and 2020 by critic Matt Zoller Seitz and film scholar David Bordwell • Behind-the-scenes, special-effects, and test footage • Trailer • Plus: Two pieces by critic Richard Brody and a double-sided poster and other ephemera.

  • Practically Perfect…
Criterion does it again with this stellar representation of one of Wes Anderson’s best. A simple Amazon review would not do justice so I’ll impart a mere suggestion. If you like beautiful things, second to none cinematography, and quirky yet endearing stories - and want to elevate those experiences beyond a simple digital version - buy this edition. In the game of digital consumption it is comforting to hold this piece in your hands and see it on your shelf. ... show more

  • One of my top 3 all time favorite movies
Yes you can call me a bandwagoner if you want- I only just found out about Wes Anderson and his movies maybe a year ago. The first one I watched was "The Darjeeling Limited" - and after that, I was hooked. I had never seen that style of shooting before, where most scenes are almost artistic in the sense that they are either symmetrical or certain items/colors/etc are placed strategically so the scene is pleasing to the eyes- not to mention the perfect narrative styles he used for each movie. The 2nd movie I watched "The Grand Budapest Hotel". Again, even with none of that Michael Bay SFX / crazy action scenes etc, Wes Anderson managed to capture my attention for every second of the movie. The 3rd one I watched as "The Royal Tenenbaums". I loved how Wes used a lot of the same characters in his movies. The 4th one was "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou". This one had noticeably more going on throughout the whole movie but retained that unique shooting style of Wes. 5th was "The Moonrise Kingdom". Personally, it seemed very different than the others. Still, it had all the qualities you'd expect. Also watched both of the stop motion films, thoroughly enjoyed both. Watched "The French Dispatch" in theaters and it seemed less "Wes Anderson" than any of his other movies- still rewatchable, but to me something was off as if the 2nd half was put together too quickly. Anyways, since I found out about Wes Anderson, I'd say I've watched "The Grand Budapest Hotel" + "The Darjeeling Limited" at least 5 times each and "The Royal Tenenbaums" a few times. But out of all of them, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is by far my most favorite- which is why I had to buy the Criterion Collection Blu-ray version when I found out about it. Perfectly packaged with a bunch of extras. Well worth the price!! ... show more

  • Physical media isn't dead
One of my favorites on a spinny, shiny plastic disc. I love Criterion's treatment of Wes Anderson's films.

  • Re-watchable move
Excellent film. Sadly my disc has a glitch, I gave it as a gift and it's probably too late to get it exchanged.
